Abstract We propose to use WFPC2 to obtain high quality morphological information on galaxies within 9 X-ray-selected poor clusters at z=0.2-0.3. These morphologies will be combined with information on the stellar populations of the galaxies from our on- going spectroscopic survey of these systems to provide a complete view of the morphological and spectral evolution of galaxies within these clusters. The results of this analysis will be contrasted with the conclusions of previous HST/spectral studies of much richer clusters to provide a clearer understanding of the physical processes which operate on galaxies and how these vary with environment. One Specific goal is to test recent claims that the ram-pressure of the intra-cluster medium causes a morphological and spectroscopic transformation of star forming disk galaxies into S0 galaxies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8325( 4) - 03/29/00 11:22 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Our target list was drawn from a catalogue of 200 X-ray luminous clusters detected in ROSAT PSPC pointings (Vikhlinin et al. 1998). We restricted our selection to those clusters with spectroscopically-confirmed redshifts within 0.22-20 * 10^44 erg/s of the rich clusters studied by HST so far, or roughly 1-to-2 orders of magnitude less luminous. Applying this upper flux cutoff to our subsample then leaves us with 9 clusters. Taking the magnitude limits for the morphological and spectral sample discussed below, R=22.5, and applying the L_X-Richness scaling to the current HST observations of distant clusters (e.g. Couch et al. 1998) we would predict that these clusters will typically contain ~ 50-100 galaxies brighter than this limit (contamination from the field population will contribute a further ~ 30 galaxies to this), of which around ~ 10--20 will be S0 galaxies. Thus to achieve a total sample of >500 cluster members (comparable to the sample acquired in the MORPHS program) and a useful sample of >= 100 S0 galaxies to study their properties and test models for their transformation (c.f. Fig.2) we will require WFPC2 imaging of all 9 clusters in our sample. Our aim is to obtain high-quality morphological information on galaxies within the clusters as faint as R=22.5 at z~0.3 (or V~23.2 for the typical color of an Sbc at these redshifts, both equivalent to M_V^*+3). This is the approximate limit for spectral classification using spectroscopy from 4-m telescopes (e.g. Poggianti et al. 1998), or more detailed FP analysis with data from 10-m telescopes. To identify the subtle features needed to morphologically classify these galaxies onto the revised Hubble scheme (as adopted by the MORPHS project, Smail et al. 1997) requires that their images contain at least 50 resolution elements (pixels) above the 3Sigma noise threshold of the exposure, or a total S/N>150. For the typical range of half-light radii (~0.2- 0.5 arcsec) seen in galaxies within intermediate redshift clusters, a galaxy with a total magnitude of R=22.5 will cover ~ 0.5 arcsec^2 (50 WFC pixels) above an mu_R=24.7 mag. arcsec^-2 isophote. This corresponds to a 1 sigma detection isophote of mu_R=25.9 mag. arcsec^-2 which is achievable in 6.4 ks in the F702W filter (using the WWW exposure tools). With acquisition overheads and assuming a typical source visibility this exposure time corresponds to 3 orbits. This is a similar exposure time to that used previously for WFPC2 studies of galaxy morphologies in z=0.2-0.3 clusters (Couch et al. 1994, 1998; Kneib et al. 1996) with which we intend to compare, as well as that expected from rescaling the MORPHS exposure times for more distant clusters (Smail et al. 1997). The depth of these images will also allow faint companions (down to R~26 or M_V^*+6 in the restframe) and other signatures of disturbance to be identified in the galaxy sample. Such features are critical for understanding the physical mechanisms operating upon individual cluster galaxies. We use three single- orbit exposures of each field to achieve the necessary depth for the morphological classification. By spatially offsetting the three exposures by small integer pixel shifts in the WFPC2 coordinate system we can remove the effects of bad/hot pixels and cosmic rays on the final stacked image. With only three exposures, all relatively shallow, we do not feel anything would be gained by using sub-pixel shifts and then attempting a drizzle reconstruction. The F702W filter was selected as it combines high sensitivity with good cosmetics. F702W also provides morphological information at restframe wavelengths close to the V-band across the redshift range of our targets: similar to the material used to classify both local and more distant cluster galaxy samples.
