Abstract The interaction between a fast post-AGB collimated wind and a slowly expanding, dense AGB wind is believed to be the dominant dynamical effect in the evolution of protoplanetary nebulae (PPNe) and the shaping of planetary nebulae. We are carrying out a multi-wavelength study of the protoplanetary nebula OH231.8+4.2. Our interferometric mapping of mm-wave molecular lines in OH231.8+4.2 shows the presence of a massive molecular envelope, to which a large amount of momentum has recently been transferred via shock interaction. Long-slit optical spectroscopy reveals the overall kinematics of the shocked high-excitation gas, showing a strong axial gradient superimposed on bubble-like expansion. OH231.8+4.2 is the only PPN known so far in which the leading bow shock has been detected. Because of the rich structure of the shocks in this source, it is the best candidate to study protoplanetary dynamics, but the different components are still poorly resolved in present observations. W e propose to use HST/WFPC2 to imag e with high angular resolution the atomic line emission from the gas component excited by shocks in OH231.8+4.2. These observations will enable an accurate determination of the structure and excitation stratification of the shock fronts and, we argue, will lead to major advances in our understanding of the dynamics of colliding stellar winds and their effect on protoplanetary evolution. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8326( 6) - 11/08/00 14:51 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ In summary, we propose to image the protoplanetary nebula OH231.8+4.2 (QX Pup) using the WFPC2 (Wide Field Camera). Seven spectral filters would be used : F673N (SII lines), F658N (NII), F656N (HAlpha), F502N (OIII) and, for the continuum, F547M, F675W, and F791W. The intensities of the nebular features we want to map are shown in Table 1. The interest of the filters and some details on the exposure time calculations are discussed on the text (Sect. 1). The broad filters will be used, in particular, to eliminate the contribution of the nebular continuum to the narrow filters. The requested exposure times, calculated following the indications in the handbooks, are specified in Table 1. We plan to perform different exposures for each line, in order to better control possible (but improbable) saturation in intense knots and eliminate cosmic ray impacts. We ask for a total of 7 orbits. We already have high-resolution imaging of a number of lines of molecules that are interesting to understand the rich chemistry of this object (like HCO^+ and SO). This data are being improved by recent observations and we expect to get a spatial resolution ~ 2''. We also plan to improve our CO data (described in the text, Fig. 1) with ^13CO observations, that will help to measure the mass and momentum distribution. Continuum mm-wave observations of OH231.8 (and other PPNe) have been obtained using the 19- channel IRAM bolometer (11'' resolution, Sanchez Contreras et al. 1998, A&A 337, 233), and will be complemented by the continuum interferometric results. Such observations yield, for the first time, an image of the cool dust distribution in PPNe. We are performing spectroscopy (long-slit) of atomic lines in PPNe, that provides high spectral resolution. Our first observations of OH231.8 are des cribed in the text (Fig. 2). We ob served in six different slit positions, practically covering the OH231.8 nebula. The observed lines, HAlpha, HBeta and forbidden lines of SII, OI, OII, OIII, and NII, are useful to trace the shocked gas and to analyze the excitation state and the density distribution. They also show the presence of a strong axial velocity superimposed on an overall expansion of the shocked material. These data provide the necessary velocity information to extract the detailed dynamics of the nebula from the high- resolution HST maps.
