Abstract A fuller understanding of the symbiotic star phenomenon is important to several branches of astrophysics including mass loss, accretion onto compact objects, and photoionisation and radiative transfer in gaseous nebulae. Our work with MERLIN, the VLA and the AT has revealed complex structure down to sub- arcsecond spatial scales, similar to the proposed binary separation in some objects. Combining the surprisingly limited amount of HST imaging data that currently exists with our radio observations has demonstrated the potentially important gains in understanding to be made. The aims of this proposal are (i) to help define the positions of the binary components in our targets (crucial to deeper understanding of the sources); (ii) to relate structure on various spatial scales to the history of activity and other parameters of each source (e.g. to explore collimation mechanisms for jets and to determine distances by expansion parallax); (iii) to explore physical conditions in t he inner nebulae and perform extinction mapping; (iv) compare and contrast the properties of sub-classes of symbiotic, and (v) to prepare the ground for future STIS spectroscopy. Our target list contains the four objects for which we have the largest amount of ground-based data, and for which structure on sub-arcsecond scales has been revealed by our radio observations. Between them, they represent intriguing examples of both major sub-classes of symbiotic. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8330( 4) - 06/29/99 08:44 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ WFPC2 has been chosen over STIS for these observations (a) because these are very bright targets in some lines and may be precluded as STIS targets, and (b) the WFPC2 filter set contains elements that we require to maximise the scientific output of the programme. We will image each target, with the stellar source on the PC, through six filters: narrow band HAlpha for direct comparison with radio free-free emission morphology, a combination which also gives us the opportunity to carry out extinction mapping around the nebula (see Ivison et al. 1991, MNRAS, 249, 347); narrow band OIII5007/4959 and OIII4363 which will explore the morphology of low density regions, and, via the flux ratio, enable us to map T_e around the nebula; narrow band HeII4686 to explore regions of moderate to high ionisation; the Stromgren y filter at 5470A which samples a region almost devoid of emission lines and likely to be dominated by the cool component continuum, and conversely the wide band F185W f ilter which will allow direct comparison with the Hack and Paresce pre-COSTAR results in the uv. Line and continuum fluxes for each object through each filter were taken from either our spectroscopic survey (Ivison et al. 1994), or, in the case of the F185W filter, from results presented in Hack and Paresce (1993 - HM Sge) and Nussbaumer and Stencel (1987, Scientific Accomplishments of IUE, ed Kondo, Reidel). For each filter (except Stromgren y) a long exposure (100 to 1000 seconds as appropriate) and two much shorter ones (5 to 20 seconds, again as appropriate) are planned with the aim of securing useful data over as large a spatial range as possible, taking into account saturation and blooming problems which would be evident for the long integrations if taken in isolation. For the Stromgren filter, where we are only concerned with locating the cool component, only very short exposures are planned. It is hoped that `dither' may be employed to improve spatial resolution as a pp ropriate. Calculations of observing time required, including overheads, result in 3 orbits for HM Sge, AG Peg and CH Cyg, and 2 orbits for V1016 Cyg. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Our programme of observations of symbiotics has run successfuly on MERLIN and the VLA for some years now. We continue to apply for more time in the future; we have been allocated MERLIN time in 1999. We will also continue to obtain data from other facilities at optical, ir (including fully-reduced ISO data currently being worked on by members of the team), mm/sub-mm (JCMT SCUBA) and radio wavelengths to complement our HST observations of the target stars. NB: These observations are however not time-critical, within the allocation period at least.
