Abstract The Hubble Deep Field (HDF) gave us an unprecedented view of the optical and rest-- frame--UV side of galaxy formation. However, new data from ISO and COBE confirms the suspicion that the optical/UV does not tell the whole story. ISO observations have also demonstrated that this is true even in the HDF. These show the presence of ~25 galaxies brighter than ~200MuJy at 15Mum. However, it is so far unclear what distinguishes the ISO sources in the HDF from many similar HDF galaxies undetected by ISO. There is a suggestion that they are more often interacting systems, and that they have somewhat redder colours, but at this stage the sample size in the HDF is too small to draw definitive conclusions. We thus propose obtaining moderately deep (~ 24-25 mag arcsec^-2) imaging of the ISO ULTRADEEP survey region. This survey covers 25 arcmin^2 to a 75MuJy flux limit -- larger and deeper than the ISOHDF -- and includes ~200 sources to the 3Sigma flux limit -- nearly 10 times as many as found by ISO in the HDF. With o ur much larger sample we will examine the detailed morphologies, colours and colour-distributions and compare them with objects undetected by ISO. In this way we will determine what makes a galaxy mid-IR luminous, and thus uncover the origin of the strong evolution seen in this population. This will put us one step closer to understanding the dark side of galaxy formation. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8331( 4) - 01/05/00 08:44 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will obtain WFPC exposures at six positions, with two roll angles, to cover the whole ULTRADEEP survey region. Images will be obtained in 3 filters so that we can examine the colours and colour distributions of the target galaxies as well as the morphologies. The identifications we have obtained from optical observations of the ULTRADEEP region are consistent with the results of the ISOHDF observations. The total magnitudes of the targets are around F814W~21, F606W~22.5, and F450W~23. To obtain a good detection of these objects and to allow their morphologies and colour distributions to be analysed, we need to reach ~ 24 mag arcsec^-2 at 2Sigma in F814W, and 25 mag arcsec^-2 at 2Sigma in F450W and F606W. According to the exposure time simulators, this will require 2300s of integration at F814W, 2600s at F606W and 5500s at F450W. We wish to use the F814W and F450W filters to provide a long lever arm for colour calculations, and the F606W filter to allow two colour analyse s. We choose to use the F814W, F45 0W and F606W filters to make comparison with the ISOHDF sources as simple as possible. To cover the ULTRADEEP survey region completely with WFPC2, we require six pointings, four at one roll angle, and two at a second roll angle at 180^o to the first (see Fig. 4). This leads to a total integration time of about 18 hours. Allowing for overheads this implies 24 orbits are needed for this programme. Real Time Justification ----------------------- ISO data for the ULTRADEEP region has been acquired at 7 and 15Mum, and the region has also been surveyed at 175Mum as part of the FIRBACK programme. We are now engaged in a comprehensive programme of followup observations. Optical imaging and spectroscopy of the area is already well underway (eg. Fig. 4), though we have yet to obtain spectra for all the ISO sources in the field. We have also obtained radio images of the area using the Australia Telescope. We hope to soon begin ground-based near-IR observations of the field at J, H and K'. Once this survey phase of the programme is completed, we will move on to detailed studies of the most interesting objects in the field using the VLT and other advanced instruments in the southern hemisphere. Since the ISO sources in the ULTRADEEP field are likely to include many actively star-forming galaxies, it will be a prime target for observations with the VSA/LMA when this project is completed. HST observations of this field fit nat urally with our multiwavelength fo llowup programme.
