Abstract A fuller understanding of the symbiotic star phenomenon is important to several branches of present day astrophysics including mass loss, accretion onto compact objects, and photoionisation and radiative transfer in gaseous nebulae. Optical imaging has been used to great effect in combination with observations at other wavelengths, and the detailed history of variability of sources, to determine such fundamental parameters as distances, likely jet collimation mechanisms and evolutionary links to the formation of planetary nebulae. That said, there is a dearth of high spatial resolution imaging of these objects with the HST. This is despite the fact that our own radio interferometry has shown structure down to sub- arcsecond size scales where in many cases one is sampling regions with dimensions of order that of the central binary pair. Here we propose to conduct the first HST survey of a carefully selected sample of symbiotics covering all major sub-types. As this is an expl or atory programme, requiring relatively short exposures, we have chosen to conduct it in SNAPSHOT mode. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8332( 5) - 10/22/99 12:38 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ WFPC2 has been chosen over STIS for these observations (a) because these are very bright targets in some lines and may be precluded as STIS targets, and (b) the WFPC2 filter set contains elements that we require to maximise the scientific output of the programme. Our full target list comprises AG Dra, RT Ser, HD149427, V1329 Cyg, PU Vul, RS Oph, He 2-106, BI Cru, H 1-36, He 2-104, He 2-147, AS 201, and V417 Cen. This includes both S and D-types, plus outbursting sources (nova-likes and recurrent novae). We will image each target, with the stellar source on the PC, through three filters: narrow band HAlpha for direct comparison with radio free-free emission morphology, a combination which also gives us the opportunity to carry out extinction mapping when both the optical and radio sources are spatially extended (see Ivison et al. 1991, MNRAS, 249, 347); narrow band OIII5007/4959 which will explore the morphology of low density, high excitation regions, and the wide band F218 W filter which will explore the environment of the hot source in more detail. Line and continuum fluxes for Z And as an example were taken through each filter from our spectroscopic survey (Ivison et al. 1994), or, in the case of the F218W filter, from results in Nussbaumer and Stencel (1987, Scientific Accomplishments of IUE, ed Kondo, Reidel). For the F218W filter, a split 20s exposure will adequately detect emission in this region without saturation from the central source. For HAlpha and OIII5007, much shorter exposures are required, otherwise blooming will occur (some saturation is however tolerable). Exposure times of 2 times 50s in each filter are likely to be optimum. Thus, including acquisition, exposure times and overheads, each visit would last approximately 36 minutes, comfortably within the recommended SNAPSHOT range. Optimally, exposures should be fine-guided, although this is not crucial, certainly for the short exposures. These times have changed in view of ou r first 7 successful snapshot observations. F437N ([O III]) has been substituted for F218W in visits 1, 3, and 10 to 13, as we only detected one target in the UV. The two [O III] filters will provide nebular diagnostics. Also, we have substituted AG Dra for Z And, in view of new radio images showing an extended nebula in the former. Real Time Justification ----------------------- None Our programme of observations of symbiotics has run successfuly on MERLIN and the VLA for some years now. We continue to apply for more time for the future; we have been awarded MERLIN time contemporaneous with the HST observations. We will also continue to obtain data from other facilities at optical, ir (including fully-reduced ISO data currently being worked on by members of the team), mm/sub-mm (JCMT SCUBA) and radio wavelengths to complement our HST observations of the target stars. NB: These observations are however not time-critical, within the allocation period at least.
