Abstract HD 98800 became interesting when IRAS found it to have a large infrared excess, indicating a substantial dust disk. But ``HD 98800'' is, in fact, a quadruple system consisting of four K and M stars, and its Hipparcos parallax has now shown that this is a pre-main sequence system. The four stars are in two visible objects, each of which is a spectroscopic binary with a period of about one year. In particular, the Ba-Bb pair is an SB2 with an estimated semi-major axis of about 20 milliarcsec. In TRANS mode, FGS1R can cleanly resolve the Ba-Bb pair and can determine the relative orbit and luminosities for the two components. POS mode observations lead to an absolute orbit and a more precise parallax than is currently available. In this program we propose to follow the HD 98800 Ba-Bb pair over the course of a full orbit during Cycle 8. The combination of FGS1R-TRANS and FGS1R-POS observations will provide gravitational masses for two low-mass PMS stars. In addition, the co nstraints of coevality and knowled ge of the astrophysical properties of the components (temperatures, luminosities, composition) make these observations a crucial test of our models of pre-main sequence evolution. These may be the first true masses determined for low-mass PMS objects, and so can provide a fundamental test of PMS evolutionary tracks. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8334( 18) - 03/27/00 12:33 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will use FGS1R in both TRANS and POS modes for this program because that can significantly improve the solution achieved. FGS1R will be used in TRANS mode to measure the separations and position angles of HD 98800 Ba-Bb. Because the period is only 315 days, the entire relative orbit can be mapped during Cycle 8 in TRANS mode. As a bonus, TRANS observations will measure the magnitude difference of the components to +/- 0.1 mag (Henry et al. 1998), which is helpful for better constraining the models in the analysis phase. An FGS TRANS observation made in Cycle 5 already shows that the brightness difference between Ba and Bb is ~1.9 mag. Co-Is Franz and Wasserman are experienced in the reduction and analysis of FGS TRANS mode observations. TRANS mode observations combined with ground-based spectroscopy lead directly to the masses of the two stars. The spectroscopic orbit alone yields M \sin^3 i for each component (Ba and Bb), and the inclination angle, i, comes from the TRANS mode measures. The minimum masses already determined from spectroscopy (Torres et al. 1995), together with placement on mass tracks (Soderblom et al. 1998), lead us to expect i to lie between about 60 and 70 degrees. Note that the spectroscopic masses have uncertainties of about 6\ of 2 degrees (which is eminently achievable), the spectroscopic errors dominate, and will be lessened by getting better radial velocity curves (which we intend to do). TRANS mode observations yield a semi-major axis (a), the relative orbit, and, when combined with the radial velocity observations, also provide an orbital parallax. We will also use FGS1R in POS mode to define the absolute orbit by placing the system in a grid of surrounding reference stars. In particular, POS observations will allow us to measure the parallax to 0.5 mas, which is about six times better than what Hipparcos achieved for this system (an error of 2.86 mas). That constrains the luminosities much more than they now are, which is also crucial fo r fitting to mass tracks. In addit i on, the POS mode solution for the masses is independent of the solution from TRANS mode data with radial velocities, and so provides a critical check of systematic error. In this program, the CfA Co-Is will provide ground-based observations of the radial velocities of the HD 98800 system, as well as their TRICOR software, which is a three-dimensional cross- correlation technique well-suited to complex spectra. The Texas and Lowell groups are, of course, experienced in the reduction and analysis of FGS data, especially in the demanding use we propose here. Dr. Siess will provide his models of pre-main sequence stars that will be used in the analysis, and the PI will direct the program and provide additional Keck spectra of the system to better determine key astrophysical parameters of the individual stars. We will also attempt to obtain HET spectra of the system during Cycle 8, if possible. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Spacing of the observations throughout Cycle 8 is critical in order to map the orbit effectively. Nine observations spaced by about a month each would be ideal. The investigators will obtain separate spectra of HD 98800 Aa and HD 98800 Ba-Bb at the Keck telescope with the HiRes spectrograph and/or the Hobby- Eberly Telescope. Observing conditions should allow both objects to be observed independently (or at least with much less contamination) as long as they are well above the horizon. An earlier spectrum of ours was at a large zenith distance, meaning that the two visible components, with a separation of only 0.8 arcsec, were not resolved. In addition, Co-I Latham will obtain additional radial velocity observations of the HD 98800 system. These, together with the FGS astrometry, will result in the masses of HD 98800 Ba and Bb.
