Abstract This is the first phase of a multi-year effort to measure true masses for low-mass dwarfs in the Pleiades and to determine an accurate distance to this fundamental cluster. The goals are: 1) To determine the true distance to the Pleiades to resolve the problem raised by the Hipparcos results for this cluster; The Hipparcos distance for the Pleiades, taken at face value, indicates that solar-composition ZAMS stars are 30% fainter than previously believed. 2) To test ZAMS models of evolution for young solar-type stars by measuring masses of individual stars. 3) To construct a mass-luminosity relation for young low-mass stars with solar composition. The resolution to the Hipparcos distance problem is vital for understanding all the parallaxes that have come from that mission and hence this issue is fundamental to the cosmic distance scale. In this first phase we get several observations of three systems which are already resolved spectroscopically and which have 2 to 3 year orb ital periods, and we examine other Pleiades binaries to ascertain which objects are resolvable pairs with separations suitable for orbit determinations with the FGS. Please note: Most of our targets are bright and near each other, and can therefore be surveyed in TRANS mode in 1/2 an orbit each. Our total orbit request reflects this. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8335( 16) - 07/05/00 10:28 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Target Selection: The best targets for a study of this kind are binaries for which both visual and spectroscopic orbits can be measured. We have selected 20 Pleiads that are likely to fulfill these requirements for this initial effort. Obviously we want to look at systems that are already known to be optically resolved or to have a known period of less than about 5 years. Our targets fall into five categories, listed in decreasing order of priority: We use ``H II'' designations, meaning numbers from the second Hertzsprung catalog of Pleiades members (all these are listed in Soderblom et al. 1993). Spectroscopic binaries with orbits: There are three Pleiades SBs with measured spectroscopic periods: H II 173 (P=478d, SB2); H II 320 (P=757d), and H II 3097 (P=773^d). These periods were measured with Coravel (Mermilliod, 1992). These periods are ideal for measuring binary orbits over a few years, and so we have requested 3 HST orbits for each of these objects in both Cycle 8 an d Cycle 9. The semi-major axes for these three systems are about 11, 14, and 14 mas, respectively. H II 320 can have a separation as large as about 16 mas, and H II 3097 can get up to 23 mas. Optically-resolved doubles: Bouvier, Rigaut & Nadeau (1997) list a number of Pleiades stars they resolved with adaptive optics. Most are much too widely separated for our purposes, but the following four have separations near 0.1 arcsec. Their periods are then ~40 years, but they are worth an initial survey to confirm that they are doubles, and to start a long-term effort at mapping their orbits. The four stars are: H II 1553, 2027, 2881, and 3197. H II 2027 and 2881 are SB2s, and H II 2027 and 3197 are triple systems. Double-lined spectroscopic binaries: Periods are not yet known for these three objects because of the intensive work needed to do that, but the fact that they are already known to be SB2s makes them worth surveying: H II 1101, 1286, and 1338. This last object consists of F stars, making its components mor e massive than others we survey. H II 1286 is an M dwarf, putting it at the low-mass end of our sample. The fact that these two systems are at the mass extremes of our sample increases their importance. All these SB2s have small velocity differences between the two sets of lines that are seen. Photometric binaries: There are 7 objects that are 0.5 magnitude or more above the single-star main sequence in the color- magnitude diagram of the Pleiades (Soderblom et al. 1993), and are therefore very likely to be doubles with components of similar mass. (There are actually more than this, but we have weeded out some unsuitable targets, such as ones known to have a companion an arcsec or more away.) During this program we will examine these stars intensively to detect their companions spectroscopically, and we wish to get TRANS mode observations to resolve close companions. These stars are H II 129, 298, 739, 1306, 1348, 2147, and 2278. Single-lined spectroscopic binaries: An intensive effort will be made to spectroscopically detect the co mpanions of these three stars, and to resolve them with the FGS. They are H II 357, 2106, and 2193. Telescope Time Requirements and Scheduling. We have requested 18 HST orbits in Cycle 8. Our three best targets (H II 173, 320, and 3097) each need 3 orbits; H II 1286 is faint and needs a full orbit to check for companions. The remaining 16 stars are all bright and fall within a limited region of the sky. Only one-half orbit each is needed for the observations to detect companions. STScI has indicated that the appropriate way to indicate this is to ask for zero and one orbit on alternate targets (fractional orbits may not be requested), hence the odd request at the beginning of this proposal. It is likely that efficient use of HST will lead to these half orbits being scheduled in blocks, but that is not a requirement we impose so that scheduling is simplified. We have asked for 21 orbits in Cycle 9; this is a rough estimate. Our three best targets will again need three orb its each to continue mapping their orbits, and that adds up to 9. We do not yet know which of the remaining 17 stars will be resolved optically, but a comparison to other clusters leads us to expect that ~1/4 of them will have suitable separations. Those will need three orbits each, or 12 total, and with the above 9 orbits added in we get the total of 21. centerline Methodology Using a combination of TRANS and POS modes, we will observe the three best targets (the SB2 with known orbital periods: H II 173, 320, and 3097) three times each in Cycle 8 (for one orbit each time). An observation set will consist of multiple runs through this sequence of POS mode observations: science target, reference stars, science target, reference stars. The number of repeats in one orbit will depend on the brightnesses of available reference stars. A series of 30 TRANS mode scans of the science target will be made just after the second POS mode visit, and use 600 seconds of each visibility period. POS mode provides a true p arallax for these targets (not jus t an orbital parallax), and also gives an independent estimate of the fractional masses of the components. For the other targets, we will use only TRANS mode in Cycle 8, using the F583W filter. Each observation of one-half orbit will consist of approximately 30 TRANS scans of 1.8 arcsec length per FGS axis, at 45 seconds per scan. Only one target, H II 1286, is faint enough to need a full orbit. We have checked with STScI scheduling staff to confirm that observing two stars per orbit is straightforward. Two of the observations on each target should be at times of maximun parallax factor (Aug, Feb), with the third occuring in Dec 1999. The remainder of the targets should also be observed at times of max parallax factor, We will obtain ground- based spectra at Keck (using HiRes) and with the Hobby-Eberly Telescope, in order to push spectroscopic limits further in an effort to detect both sets of lines in some of these systems, but those observations do not need coordination with the HST observations. Our first run to do this occurs in mid-November, 1998, at Keck. The HET is expected to be available in mid-Cycle 8, but we have back-up options at McDonald observatory for radial velocity monitoring, if necessary.
