Abstract The Hubble Deep Field - North (HDF-N) is an unquestionably unique laboratory for studying the formation and evolution of distant galaxies. We propose to analyze all the galaxies in the complete NICMOS map of the HDF-N with a PSF-convolved ``bulge/disk'' surface brightness model. These quantitative structural measurements in the near-infrared will be combined with WFPC2 optical measurements to answer four basic questions: (1) Are the underlying structures of distant galaxies significantly altered (or even hidden) by dust and star formation to which optical images are particularly sensitive? (2) How do dynamical masses seen in recent Keck measurements of internal kinematics of distant galaxies compare with total masses of old stars in the near-IR? (3) Is the paucity of elliptical galaxies seen in the HDF-N due to dust or late hierarchical galaxy formation? (4) What are the spatially resolved age and star formation histories of HDF-N galaxies?
