Abstract We propose to re-image the HDF in F606W in order to confirm and better determine the proper motions of four MACHO candidates discovered from the comparison of the original December 1995 HDF frames with WFPC2 F814W frames exposed in December 1997. Four very faint, blue, isolated and unresolved objects are found to have substantial proper motion, 52 +/- 10 \mas, 102 +/- 14 \mas, 46 +/- 10 \mas and 69 +/- 11 \mas over the two year baseline. Galactic structure models predict a complete absence of normal stars in the color-magnitude range in which these objects are observed. However, these observations are consistent with recently derived models of old hydrogen atmosphere white dwarfs, whose color, contrary to previous expectations, has been shown to be blue. If so, the stars we have detected have ages in the range 10 \Gyr --> 14 \Gyr. With a correction for the incompleteness of the sample, the number density of such objects is ~ 0.02 pc^-3, or ~ 0.01 msun pc^-3, assuming for their masses a value typical of white dwarfs. Within the uncertainties arising from the small size of the sample, this mass density is sufficient to account for the entire missing Galactic dynamical mass. The present observations aim to confirm this potentially very important finding. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8389( 6) - 03/20/01 09:57 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Bandpass: F606W frames are requested since we have only used F814W frames for the proper motion measurements presented above. Comparing object centroids from the original F606W frames and the requested F606W frames will provide an independent test of the F814W proper motion measurements. PM accuracy and exposure time: We require sufficient exposure in F606W to measure the proper motions of sources as faint as V = 28.5. With a signal to noise ratio of S/N = 8 we will be able to determine the proper motion of these objects to 2.5 \masyr (assuming a 4 year baseline), judging from our artificial star simulations. Since the proper motions detected from the present F814W dataset are ~ 25 \masyr, the 2.5 \masyr accuracy of the requested F606W dataset will be sufficient to determine beyond any reasonable doubt whether the proper motions we have detected are correct or not, and consequently whether the massive compact halo objects can be old white dwarfs. The 10Sigma limiting magnitude of the first epoch F606W exposures is m_AB = 28.21 (Willams Etal\ 1996); S/N = 8 is achieved near V = 28.5. Thus a similar total exposure to the first epoch F606W data is required, namely ~ 100000 sec. It will be most efficient to obtain the observations in the CVZ; in Dec 1999, it will be possible to re- image the HDF with a similar roll angle to the previous observations. Following the strategy adopted for the second epoch HDF (GO6473), we will obtain 1 * 1600 + 1 * 1900 sec in F606W during the dark part of each orbit, and then switch to F300W for a single exposure of 1600 sec during the bright phase of each orbit. The F300W exposures provide a means to flag hot pixels and will add significant depth to the archival database. We therefore request 28 orbits. Orientation angle constraints: Ideally, the new F606W frames should be taken at an orientation angle as close as possible to the original HDF frames. The reason for imposing this observational constraint is the uncertainty in the geometric transformations between pixel positions on different frames; clearly this uncertainty directly influences the final positional uncertainty in the centroid of an object. The (designed) optical distortion of the WFPC2 camera has been carefully fit by Trauger Etal\ 1997, with bicubic polynomials in both the x and y directions, which can be used to ``undistort'' the chips. We have found that the best way to compute the geometric transformations between frames is to fit the positions (x_m, y_m) on a master frame to positions (x, y) on some other frame using a simple linear transformation: x_m= A + C x' - D y', y_m= B + D x'+ C y', where x' and y' are given by the Trauger formulae x'=T_x(x, y), y'=T_y(x, y). The rms uncertainties in the Trauger distortion map are approximately 0.1 pixels on the WF chips. However, as shown by Ibata & Lewis (1998), the uncertainties in differential measurements over small number of pixels (up to ~ 10 pixels) must be smaller than 0.02 pixels. This is the reason why it is desirable that the frames in both epochs are exposed in approximately the same position and same orientation angle. However, the required 2.5 \masyr accuracy in the proper motion measurements corresponds to ~ 0.1 WF pixels over four years, which is approximately the accuracy in the Trauger distortion map. Thus it is desirable, but not crucial, that the new exposures be obtained at the same orientation as the original HDF. Real Time Justification ----------------------- As discussed above, these observations are most efficiently carried out in the CVZ. Ideally, they should be scheduled for Dec 1999, as then it will be possible to obtain images at the same roll angle as previous observations.
