Abstract The O-type star 15~Mon (HD~47839) was recently discovered to be a speckle and spectroscopic binary with an orbital period of 25 years. An analysis of both the radial velocity curve and astrometric orbit yields the masses of the components and distance to the system. The determination of this "orbital parallax" will be supplemented by FGS Astrometric observations of the binary system relative to nearby reference stars that are also observable in the FGS FOV. This will lead to a determination of the mass of each component. Both radial velocity and astrometric measurements are scant at present, but the system is now close to periastron and continued spectroscopic and astrometric monitoring will lead to a definitive orbit and yield important information about the masses of O-type stars. FGS measurements of separation, position angle, and magnitude difference (begun in Cycle 5) are needed to bridge the gap between current speckle observations and the new generation of optical interferometers. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8392( 9) - 09/22/00 07:49 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ This is a Continuation Proposal for a long term program which was approved for 2 orbits in each of Cycles 5, 6, and 7. According to our working set of orbital elements, the binary will remain unresolved by ground-based speckle methods until after 2000, and so we need observations in Cycle 8 to fill the gap at a key point in the orbit. Our goal is to obtain FGS1r TRANS mode measurements of the separation, position angle, and magnitude difference of 15~Mon. We are aiming for a positional accuracy of a few mas and a photometric accuracy of 0.1 mag, both of which have been achieved in recent binary studies with the FGS (see Franz et al. 1998, AJ, 116, 1432). Because of the relative brightness of the star, the observations will be made with the 5 mag neutral density filter, F5ND. We plan to obtain approximately 25 scans in the TRANS mode of operation which should require approximately 18 minutes exposure time. We estimate that an observation of 15~Mon can easily be accomplished in a single orbit. The success of the Cycle 5 and 6 observations demonstrate the general feasibility of the project. A new component of our cycle 8 proposal is the inclusion of POS mode observations of nearby reference starsalong with the TRANS mode observations of the binary. This will allow for a determination of the system's barycenter, and hence the relative mass of each component. This will nicely supplement the radial velocity data in that both an orbital parallax and a trigonometric parallax will be obtained. Real Time Justification ----------------------- None. Our group (plus collaborators) will be continuing a program of high S/N spectroscopy of 15 Mon over the next decade to derive an accurate radial velocity curve and mass ratio. The spectra will be obtained primarily with our Multiple- Telescope Telescope (at the GSU Hard Labor Creek Observatory near Atlanta), a 1-m equivalent aperture telescope with a fiber-fed spectrograph and CCD detector.
