Abstract Saturn's rings are a unique dynamical laboratory and continue to present challenging problems which require additional data to attack. Making use of the capabilities of HST, and the changing geometry of the rings as seen from Earth orbit over the course of 1/4 Saturn year (7 Earth years), we propose to address important outstanding problems such as the composition of the ring material (known to be radially variable on spatial scales down to hundreds of km), the ``filling factor" of the rings (a key constraint on their dynamical behavior), continuing controversy over the cause of the ``opposition brightening", transient gravitational instabilities (from their photometric signatures), azimuthal asymmetries in ring brightness, refinement of orbits of dynamically important small satellites, and the temporal variability of the clumpy F ring, ``spokes", and other regions. This is a continuation of our original Cycles 6 and 7 long-term proposal to obtain a coherent set of images of the Saturnian ring system over the full range of ring tilt and phase angles accessible from the Earth. This time history and photometric survey will be completed just prior to Cassini's arrival at Saturn, and will provide valuable information for optimal planning of ring and small satellite observations during the Cassini tour. Here, we propose to use UBVRI, F255W, and compositional filters filters with the PC chip of WFPC2 to image the rings and adjacent small satellites over the full range of phase angles accessible during Cycle 8. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8398( 4) - 05/21/99 10:16 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ This proposal focuses on aspects of the composition and structure of Saturn's rings which can be best addressed by the WFPC2 capabilities of HST. The justifications for HST are: (a) the spatial resolution (300 km) required to resolve known radial structure in particle color and composition as well as to detect small satellites and observe F ring clumps, is obtainable with the PC but not with groundbased instruments; (b) the wavelength coverage extends into the UV, and the WFPC2 is better calibrated than Voyager UV data; (c) the sensitivity and stability which is needed to study dependence of ring brightness on phase and tilt angles. Of these, radial resolution is a key factor, because not only the color and composition, but also the volume packing fraction and viscosity, are expected to vary on several hundred km radial scales. In addition, Voyager spectral data are available at only three wavelengths, and over this range interesting variations in spectral shape are seen. HST data are neeeded to characterize particle composition at the highest attainable radial resolution. This is a long-term survey project which will span seven years, by which time Saturn's rings will have gone from nearly edge- on to their maximum opening angle. During each opposition, we propose to observe the rings on four separate HST orbits, in order to provide a range of phase and ring tilt angles, as well as a time baseline over which to detect variations in ring structure (particularly the F ring) and measure satellite mean motions. Images during all four HST orbits will be timed so that the small satellites Pandora and Prometheus are unobscured by Saturn and are near elongation. (1) `Zero' phase observations. During each year of observations, we request one HST orbit when Saturn is at its minimum phase angle. We will use the PC to image separately each of the two ansae in a standard set of filters (UVBRI filters: F336W, F439W, F555W, F675W, F814W, and F255W). The exposures are quite short, and there is adequate time in an orbit to move from one ansa to the other and to run through the entire filter sequence for a total of ~12 images per orbit. (2) `High' phase observations. Additionally, we request one HST orbit each year when Saturn is at its maximum phase angle, either before or after opposition. The exposure sequence will be similar to the zero phase case. (3) `Moderate' phase observations. In order to characterize the opposition surge, we plan to observe the rings at two additional intermediate phase angles using the standard UBVRI filters for one ansa but adding the F785LP and F1042M filters to the UBVRI filters for the other ansa to help determine ring composition. Exposure times are on the order of 10 seconds or less for most of the UBVRI set, about 300 seconds for the F255W filter, and about 60 seconds for the F1042M filter. Our primary goal for Cycle 8 observations is to obtain high resolution (PC) images of both ansae of Saturn's rings over a broad range of colors at phase angles near 6, 1, 0.5 and 0.3 degrees (Visits 1x, 2x, 3x and 4x, respectively) prior to and during the 1999 Saturn opposition The UBVRI exposures will be used to study color variations across the rings and for photometric modelling of the rings with varying illumination and viewing geometry. We want UBVRI coverage of BOTH ansae with the PC during every visit. The F785LP and F1042M exposures will be used for composition studies of the rings, and less frequent coverage is acceptable. The F255W filter will be used to study UV reflectance of dusty spokes, primarily found on the Eastern ansa of the rings. A second goal is to observe both Pandora and Prometheus during each visit. Our previous HST observations, combined with HST Ring Plane Crossing observations have shonw that BOTH of these satellites differ substantially from their predicted JPL ephemeris positions. There are several competing models for these discrepancies, and frequent observations (obtainable only from HST, not from the ground) are needed to help sort out the dynamics at work. Real Time Justification ----------------------- This is a long-term survey proposal. We request that that Saturn be observed on a single HST orbit for each of four separate phase angles every year from now until the rings are at their maximum opening angle (about 7 years from now), for a total of 28 orbits for the duration of the project. We require observations at or near the minimum phase angle of each opposition, at two intermediate phase angles (to map out the opposition effect), and at maximum phase angle (about 6 degrees) when Saturn is at quadrature. Because of the phasing of the oppositions, and the irregular boundaries between observing cycles, this means that in some HST Cycles (such as Cycle 7) we will be requesting more than 4 visits), but the entire duration of our project is still set at 28 visits over 7.5 years. The primary time-critical events in our visits are that we observe Saturn at a number of fairly specific phase angles, and that whenever possible, the visits be timed so that Prometheus is not in front of or behind the planet. For each visit, we summarize below the strategy behind our choices of exposures and targets. If major satellites are in the field, they can be used as local calibrators. The inclination of the rings to the line of sight is sufficiently large (and the exposures sufficiently short) that we do not expect scattered light from the satellites to contaminate our view of the rings (unlike the situation during ring plane crossing).
