Abstract We are observing NGC 4414 as part of the Hubble Heritage Project, with the objective of combining this dataset with previous HST observations of this galaxy. The aim of the Heritage Project is to provide spectacular HST color images for public release, ou treach, and education. This Heritage observation will revisit NGC 4414 to obtain a separate pointing of the other half of the galaxy. There will be some overlap between the two pointings. Previously used filters and approximate exposure times will be repe ated. This will minimize efforts when producing a color image from the combined datasets. Additional objectives: While preparing the existing datasets of NGC 4414 for the Hubble Heritage project, an uncatalogued variable object was found in the images. Si nce the position of this star will fall in the overlap region of the second pointing, we will be duplicating all filters that have been previously used to observe this galaxy and specifically the variable object. Thus, the o ne filter change from F555W to F60 6W in the short exposures (see below) is justified. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8400( 3) - 04/19/99 10:49 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ This galaxy will be observed using 3 orbits of DD time to obtain exposures in F439W, F555W, F814W and F606W. Previous observations of this object using HST WFPC2 were done by Jeremy Mould in Proposals 5397 and 5972 using F439W, F555W, F814W and another ob servation was done by Garth Illingworth in F606W (PID 5446). All previous datasets were centered on roughly the same coordinates. Use of the previous coordinates for this second pointing would require an extremely large POS TARG that would take the object out of the WFALL-FIX aperture. For this reason, the central coordinates of the object for the new pointing with have been recalculated (with no POS TARG). Some overlap in the observations will occur such that the nucleus of the galaxy which was positione d on the PC chip in the Mould/Illingworth observations will be placed in WF3 of the new observations. Previous CR-SPLIT observations by Mould (PID 5397 and 5972) were taken to total 2500 S. To avoid saturation of the nucleus in the WF3 chip, we will observe with comparable exposure times, however, we will separate the data into sets of long exposures accompanied by short exposures for each filter. The short exposures will be necessary in the event the nucleus saturates the WF3 chip in the longer exposures. A djustments in ATODGAIN will help to alos avoid saturation in the longer exposures. A short exposure in the F606W filter will replace the short F555W exposure so as to correlate with previous data points in the variable object light curve obtained with the previous data (specifically Illingworth proposal 5446). Also, the complete color image that will be created by combining this data with previous observations will be used as a Heritage image release within the next calendar year (April, 1999 - April, 200 0). Current possible observation dates have been restricted to exclude those dates outside of this range. Thus, the BETWEEN statement allows only the April-June, 1999 observation dates as a possible range and discludes dates in the April - June, 2000 range.
