Abstract Nova Velorum 1999 (V382 Vel), discovered on 1999 May 22, is the ninth brightest classical nova in recorded history, and probably the brightest nova that will occur during the HST mission. In this Director's Discretionary program, We will obtain a series of STIS UV spectra of Nova Vel as it fades, in order to study elemental abundances, velocity fields of the ejecta, ejecta masses, and energy budgets. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ The first Visit will consist of 3 observations that cover the entire UV spectrum at medium resolution, using one E140M setting and two E230M settings. Exposure times have been estimated by scaling from IUE observations of Nova CrA 1981 (V693 CrA), which appears to have had a similar decline rate to Nova Vel 1999. Real Time Justification ----------------------- The observations are time-critical, since we want to observe the decline from maximum and the transition from an optically thick to an optically thin spectrum. Calibration Justification ------------------------- Additional Comments ------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8540( 7) - 08/16/99 15:54 - [ 2] Data Distribution Paper Products: YES Media: ELECTRONIC Blocking Factor: 10 Ship To: STSCI Ship Via: Email: bond@stsci.edu ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8540( 7) - 08/16/99 15:54 - [ 3] TARGET LIST Fixed Targets ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tar| Target | Target | Target |Coord | Radial | Flux data No | Name | Description | Position |Eqnx | Vel. | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1 NOVA-VEL- STAR, Classical Nova RA = 10H 44M 48.37S +/- 0.7", J2000 V = 3.9 1999 DEC = -52D 25' 30.6" +/- 0.7", PLATE-ID=01F4 Comments: Coordinates are in GSC frame, for the pre-nova candidate identified by P.
