Abstract Broad band images will be made of the reflection nebula NGC 1999 as part of the Hubble Heritage program. Short narrow band images will be made of the binary central star. Observations of this object, NGC 1999, will be part of an HST public-relations event to obtain the last HST image of the year 1999. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8548( 21) - 12/22/99 16:37 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ NGC 1999 is a bright reflection nebula on the forward face of the same giant molecular cloud that has given rise to the Trapezium Cluster and the famous Orion Nebula (NGC 1976). It is particularly interesting because its bright illuminating star is one o f the classic Ae/Be stars, i.e. massive young stars (possibly pre-main sequence). At spectral type A2, it is too cool to photoionize the surrounding material, so that one sees the nearby nebular material through scattered light. The star-nebula combinat ion is of more than ordinary interest because the parent star seems to be the origin of one of the earliest known Herbig Haro Objects (HH 35). Moreover, the central star has been determined to be a binary of about 0.15" separation by speckle interferometr y. The short observations planned (in CCD1) will allow the first images of the close binary to be made. The longer observations will cover a wide wave- length range and are sufficiently long to give good S/N for outer parts of the nebula. If it is like other reflection nebulae it will show strong variations in color across the object and we expect that the longest wavelength filter will also nicely show the Herbig Haro object as it passes most of the strong emission lines that arise from the Herbig Haro shoc ks. The Hubble Heritage Team will be observing and releasing the object NGC 1999 in conjunction with trying to obtain the last observations of the calendar year 1999. We wish to observe this object on the last two orbit of scheduled HST time on Dec 31. 19 99. A 6 hour observing window has been recommended for scheduling purposes and is reflected in the below BETWEEN statement, however, efforts to pin point these observations to the last two orbits prior to 0:00 UT Jan 1, 2000 will be highly effective for o ur project's releasing of the image. The justification for the constrained timing is due to the public visibility of the program and specifically these observations which are being advertised in advance, however, we wish to convey to the contact scientist, p rogram coordinator and schedulers that this optimum time is a request but not a requirement. If the observations can not be scheduled sometime during the times specified in the below BETWEEN statement, the Heritage Project wishes to obtain observations at the next closest time, with the higher priority being given to scheduling observations before the end of 1999 (if at all possible) rather than after.
