Abstract The outer regions of massive clusters represent transitional areas of great cosmological importance where field galaxies encounter the steep potential wells of dark matter and baryonic hot gas. Little is known about either the dark matter profile at large radii or the morphological properties of infalling galaxies at those redshifts where strong evolution is observed in the cluster cores. The former is central to understanding the puzzling high baryonic fraction observed in cluster cores with clear implications for the mean mass density, Omega_o. Understanding the mass distribution on large scales will also help separate cosmological field galaxy evolution from that driven by the environment. To address these questions we propose a wide-field imaging survey of the rich cluster Cl0024+1654 (z=0.40) which takes advantage of an extensive galaxy redshift survey we have compiled. We have designed an efficient sampling strategy which will simultaneously track the gravitational shear to at least ~5h_50^-1 Mpc using proven mass reconstruction techniques developed with ground and HST-based data and connect this dark matter profile with the radial dependence of star formation, dynamical and morphological properties of recently- arrived cluster members. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8559( 12) - 08/14/01 11:58 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ The cluster Cl0024+1654 (z=0.40) is the ideal target for the comprehensive program proposed. The core has been imaged with HST (PI: Turner, ID: 5453) (Smail et al 1996, 1997a) and the redshift of the multiply-imaged arc (z=1.627, Broadhurst et al 1999) tightly constrains the mass within 200 kpc. A further WFPC-2 offset field is also available (PI: Hill, ID: 7245). A comprehensive CFHT/WHT V<22.5 spectroscopic survey has been completed yielding 697 redshifts within the required 21 * 28 arcmin field (Czoske et al 1999, Figure 3). Its analysis reconciles the dynamical mass (M(<1 Mpc)= 3.10^14Mo) with X-ray estimates (Soucail et al, submitted). The cluster has a remarkably circular shear pattern even at 3 Mpc radius (Bonnet et al 1994) and the redshift survey does not reveal any likely contamination from asymmetric structures which would otherwise confuse the derived radial mass profile. The photometric and star- formation properties of the cluster members are well- constrained from ground- based data which includes deep narrow-band [OII] imaging. Our requirements are set by the need to measure the projected mass profile reliably to large scales. The key factors are the limiting shear detectable with WFPC-2 in a given exposure time and the strategy necessary for economically deploying a mosaic of WFPC-2 fields to determine the radial variations. The limitations of WFPC-2 for weak lensing have been studied in detail by Rhodes et al (1999) and Hoekstra et al (1998). Systematic effects arise from camera distortions and PSF anisotropies which can be determined from astrometric shifts (Holtzmann et al 1995) and globular cluster observations, respectively. Both can be greatly reduced by averaging over each CCD chip and by selecting background galaxies larger than a chosen isophotal area. Including approximations made in applying these corrections, the total systematic uncertainty in the measured shear is sigma_Gamma~0.5% error of the shear averaged over a chip is sigma_Gamma ~ sigma_Epsilon/sqrt(N), where sigma_Epsilon is the rms intrinsic ellipticity of the background galaxies and N is the number per chip. From our field surveys sigma_Epsilon ~0.3 independent of magnitude and thus statistical noise is the dominant factor. At I=25 the galaxy surface density gives a shear sensitivity per 80"*80" WFC chip of sigma_Gamma ~ 5% We emphasize that a detailed map of the DM in Cl0024+1654 is not the primary goal, rather by azimuthal averaging we are optimising for measuring the mass profile to large radii. Depending on its form we expect a shear of 2-4% Figure 3 illustrates our proposed sampling strategy based on 38 new WFPC-2 exposures. With ~8 WFPC-2 fields at the periphery, the shear uncertainty in the interval 4-5 Mpc will be reduced to 1% (1-Sigma) ensuring a robust test of the NFW profile. As is commonplace for lensing work, in each field we will perform a multi-point dither with multiple sub-exposures at each position. A single pixel offset will be applied inbetween each sub-exposure to aid cosmic ray removal; non- integral offsets will be applied inbetween each dither to properly sample the psf and measure precise image ellipticities. The F814W filter is preferred as it provides continuuity with previous exposures and enables more precise comparisons of cluster galaxy properties with field samples available from the Medium Deep Survey and CFRS/LDSS studies (Brinchmann et al 1998). 2 orbits per pointing will be required to meet our joint goal of securing a reliable mass profile and robust galaxy morphologies. For the lensing aspect, we verify this requirement using Cycle 6 observations of Cl0939+4713 (z=0.41) which detects a shear of 5-7% ~ 1 arcmin using 2 orbits per pointing in F702W.
