Abstract We are requesting deep, broad-band red WFPC2 images of three fields within a supercluster at z ~ 0.9 in order to study the morphological properties of galaxies within a high-redshift large scale structure. Because significant evolution has already been observed in galaxy populations at this redshift, these observations will provide a crucial link between the global properties of large scale structure and galaxy-scale physics. The target supercluster contains two clusters which have already been well-studied by the proposers with Keck and HST. CL1604+4304 and CL1604+4321 are typical of Abell richness class 1 to 3 clusters. They are separated by 4100 km s^-1 and by only 7 h_0.7^-1 Mpc. This system is one of only two superclusters that are known at z > 0.9. The proposed HST fields cover the outskirts of the two clusters, as well as the very central supercluster region. These data will be combined with previous HST observations of the cluster cores to generate a complete sample of distant galaxies in a nearly contiguous area corresponding to 1 Mpc * 10 Mpc. The HST imagery, combined with a Palomar/Keck program to obtain photometric and spectroscopic coverage of the same region, will allow us to quantify the morphology--density relation over a wide range of local environments and to study the relationship between galaxies, clusters, and their surrounding large scale structure in the high-redshift universe. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8560( 2) - 08/03/00 15:53 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ The three WFPC2 fields have been chosen so that they will cover a variety of local densities within the supercluster region that is intermediate between the clusters CL1604+4304 and CL1604+4321. While we would prefer contiguous coverage, we can use our ground-based data to select the three optimal positions which will sample the full range of supercluster environments. Specifically, two of the fields are situated approximately 2 Mpc from the center of each cluster. The observations of these fields will provide direct morphological data on galaxies within the infall regions of the clusters. Because the clusters differ substantially in total mass, we expect variations in the galaxy behavior observed in these two fields. The third field provides high angular resolution imaging of the very central region of the supercluster complex, approximately 3.5 Mpc from the center of either cluster. This is an environment which has yet to be explored at high redshift. For the proposed observations we have chosen the F814W filter. It is the most efficient filter choice given the spectral energy distribution of a passively-evolving elliptical, and it corresponds to the well-studied B band at the redshift of the supercluster. Most of the previous HST observations of intermediate and high-redshift clusters have been made in this filter, including those of CL1604+4304. In addition, the morphological properties of field galaxies have been well-studied in this filter. There exists morphologically- classified field counts down to I_814 = 25 from the combined data of the Medium Deep Survey and the Hubble Deep Field (Abraham et al.\ 1996; van den Bergh et al.\ 1996). Based on the analysis of the HST observations of the central regions of CL1604+4304 and CL1604+4321, we can accurately classify galaxies down to a total AB magnitude limit of I_814 = 24.7 in an exposure of 16 ksec (or 7 orbits at this declination). At this magnitude limit, these galaxies have an average S/N of 5 or greater in their central 80 WFC pixels, allowing us to reliably measure the basic morphological characteristics such as the effective radius, compactness parameter, asymmetry, radial profile, and galaxy class. This magnitude limit corresponds to the flux of a passively evolving elliptical of 1/3 L^* at z = 0.9 (M_V ~ -19.0 + 5 log h), allowing us to study relatively faint supercluster members. We have used this magnitude limit in the morphological analysis of the HST fields centered on CL1604+4304 and CL1604+4321; therefore, we are requesting 7 orbits for each of the three supercluster fields in order to reach the same depth as the cluster observations. We will request offsets of a few WFC pixels after 3 orbits to improve the rejection of residual hot pixels and other CCD defects. In addition, we are requesting coordinated parallel observations with STIS in imaging mode. Because WFPC2 and STIS are separated by only 5', the STIS field- of-view falls well within the supercluster region (see Figure refpal). Consequently, we will simultaneously cover about 10 observations. We have chosen the F28X50LP filter because it is the closest filter to F814W. This makes a comparison with the primary WFPC2 observations much more straightforward. Real Time Justification ----------------------- No special requirements are necessary. There are no coordinated observations which affect the scheduling of this HST proposal.
