Abstract We propose to obtain HST WFPC2 imagery and STIS UV-optical-NIR spectroscopy of several regions in the brightest Wolf-Rayet Shell Nebula (WRSN), NGC 6888. The physical conditions in the wind-driven and/or stellar ejected plasma (temperature, density, ionization, and composition) of WRSN, which are dominated by strong stellar winds from hot massive stars in an advanced state of evolution, often involve emission from both shock-ionized and photoionized gas in close proximity. These new observations will comprise the first combined spectroscopy and imagery of a WRSN at a resolution sufficient (i.e., ~ 10^15 cm) to separate and individually analyze these two emission regions. We also expect to obtain the first determination of the abundance of carbon - a key element in the He-C-N nucleosynthesis chain - in WRSN, of which several are known to be nitrogen- and helium-enriched by mass loss during its previous red supergiant phase. These observations will also be used to evaluate the contribution of stellar wind-driven shock emission as a source of temperature fluctuations, important for accurate abundance determinations within this and other types of nebulae, such as planetary nebulae and H ii regions. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8568( 11) - 10/08/01 17:01 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Our observational plan is primarily directed at placing the 0arcs2 wide STIS slit across three locations in the northern part of NGC 6888 where there are knots of high surface brightness and special scientific interest. In parallel with taking the spectra with the CCD and NUV/MAMA we have specified an ORIENT which permits the WFPC2 FOV to lie across a scientifically interesting part of the nebula for imagery in HAlpha, O iii, and continuum for study and modeling along the lines of the original location study by MHS99. Additionally, there are two locations where we would like primary imagery by WFPC2 as the driving science, but also specify ORIENTS for which the STIS slit (now 0arcs5 wide) lies across an interesting part of the nebula. Altogether, we have five pointings: STIS-1, STIS-2, STIS-3, WFPC2-1, and WFPC2-2. In all cases we make maximum use of the dual imagery-spectroscopy capabilty of HST to maximize the scientific return. The locations are shown in Figure 2 for reference. These locations were carefully selected for their varied and different physical structure(s) found in the CCD imagery and spectroscopy results of Mitra (1990), Esteban & Vilchez (1992), and MHS99. For each of the five locations, we note the location and orientation, give estimates of key line fluxes (or surface brightness) derived from the above studies (and using the MHS99 CLOUDY models for estimating the UV line strengths), and exposure times necessary to reach adequate S/N for the emission lines. Note that all ``fluxes''(F) given are in units of 10^-14 ergs cm^- 2 sec^-1 arcsec^-2 and S/N estimates are per WF pixel (PP) for WFPC2 and ``resolution element'' (RE) for STIS. The S/N results presented were calculated using the WFPC2 and STIS ETC on the WWW. At its declination, the (sub)orbital visibility period for NGC 6888 with HST is 54 minutes. For the three STIS primary observations, two orbits are dedicated to the CCD and three for the NUV-MAMA. Using the CCD, for the first orbit we consider 6 min for GSACQ, then (6+1) min for acquiring an nearby star and doing an offset. Then there is the 5 min overhead demanded for the first CCD exposure, 2 min to do a G750L ``fringe-flat,'' 5 min for a grating change and 1 min each overhead for two CR-split exposures, leaving 27 minutes for exposures with the G750L and G750M gratings, which we will divide into 24 min G750L and 3 min G750M (CR-split) exposures. On the second STIS CCD orbit, we have only the overhead of 5 min REACQ, 5 min G430L grating change, and 1 min for the CR- split, leaving ~43 minutes for the G430L science exposures. For the three NUV- MAMMA orbit visit, the overhead times for the first orbit are (6+6+1) min + 8 min ``first MAMA exposure'' overhead, leaving ~33 minutes of science exposure with the G230L grating. For the second and third orbits, the 5+2+4 (REAC+EXP+ WAVECAL), leaving ~43 minutes for science exposures (no CR-split needed). So, the cumulative exposure time for the NUV-MAMA orbits is ~119 min. For explicit S/N examples, we give surface brightnesses as noted above for the three knots derived from our ground-based imagery, spectroscopy, and modeling (necessary in the UV) for the ``science-driving'' emission lines N ii 5755 Angstrom for G750L, N ii 6584 Angstrom\ for G750M, O iii 4363 Angstrom\ for G230L, and C iii 1909 Angstrom\ for G230L. We used the STIS ETC and give the results in the form SB(surface brightness) = SNRE(S/N per resolution element) = SN1(S/N for a 1 arc sec length along the slit). These are for the cumulative exposure times detailed above. All were calculated with the STIS ETC using the extended source option, 2*2 binning for the CCD (none with the NUV-MAMA). The emission line wavelengths, FWHM, and fluxes were directly inputted. Primary STIS-1 position across outermost HAlpha knot in the GTO field ORIENT = 271 deg -- This location is modeled by MHS99 and plots of the emission in HAlpha, O iii, and S ii are shown on the RHS of Figure 1. The high O iii T_e of this region causes strong UV lines. (6584, 5755, 4363, 1909) = SB(5.6, 0.040, 0.12, 0.36) = SNRE(18.6, 1.0, 4.4, 0.8) = SN1(59, 3.2, 13.9, 3.6). While the S/N of the weak auroral line of N ii may be a problem to have good S/N at scales of <1'', the other lines have good S/N, including C iii. This may indicate a significant interaction with the post-shock stellar wind. In addition, the slit also passes through a bright ridge connected to the radial knot. For this location, the WFPC2 parallel extends beyond the mass-loaded (strong HAlpha & N ii emission edge) of the nebula and images the ISM outside the boundary which shows weak O iii emission. The WFPC2 parallels lie across the eastern boundary of the nebula. Note that the parallel exposure plan will be similar to that detailed in the WFPC2-1 plan below for all three STIS locations. Primary STIS-2 position across another bright HAlpha knot in the GTO field ORIENT = 271 deg -- This knot is farther inward towards the WN star in the NE knot region and has strong N ii but low T_e. Nonetheless, our S/N are adequate for all of the lines if we sum 1'' slices along the slit. It's lower ionization and other characteristics dissimilar to the outer STIS-1 knot nearby makes it important to model. (6584, 5755, 4363, 1909) = SB(6.5, 0.045, 0.075, 0.25) = SNRE(10.2, 0.7, 1.3, 0.4) = SN1(32, 2.2, 4.2, 1.8). The WFPC2 parallels lie just beyond the eastern boundary of the nebula. Primary STIS-3 position across a strong O iii emitting knot in NW rim ORIENT = 7 deg -- This location is in the NW group of high excitation, but not necessarily high T_e, knots inside the extended ``blowout'' to the NW. It is both interesting and important that this region be studied to ascertain why the knots have higher excitation and if their chemical composition is different from the NE knots (6584, 5755, 4363, 1909) = SB(2.1, 0.028, 0.32, 0.19) = SNRE(10.2, 0.7, 1.3, 0.4) = SN1(32, 2.2, 4.1, 1.8). The WFPC parallels also fall on an interesting region on the northern edge of the nebula containing many strong O iii filaments. Primary WFPC2-1 position across the NW ``blowout'' and overlapping the STIS-3 slit location and also a bright knot near the WN6 star ORIENT = 95 deg -- This proposed WFPC2 position covers a region very different in spectral properties from the GTO observed area. Spectroscopy and imagery show higher O iii/HAlpha than in the GTO field. Is this due to a closer proximity to the stellar UV flux, direct interaction with the stellar wind, or both? To evaluate this, we propose to image this area with F656N, F673N, F658N, and F502N to ascertain the emission mechanism. In addition to the requested length of exposures, time must be spent for instrumental overhead (OH); we allow 9 m (gs acq) or 6 min (gs reacq) + 2 m (readout) + 1 m (each CCD clear) + 1 m (parallel) + 1 m (filter placement), plus 1 m for the initial exposure (clock sync) and 1 m for the final exposure (tape overhead). So 16m of orbit time is spent on OH for each set of exposures, with an extra 3m for the GS ACQ of the first exposure. We propose 2 * 1100s exposures in the F656N, F658N, and F673N filters, and a 2 * 2200s exposure in the F502N filters. Based on peak surface brightness flux values from published data of F(6563, 6717/31, 6584, 5007) = (4.4, 0.21, 3.3, 0.54) we expect a S/N per pixel of S/N(6563, 6717/31, 6584, 5007) = (40, 8, 35, 10) PP. We will use the STIS in parallel during these exposures to observe a knot ``near''(?) the WN star using the G750L, G750M and G430L gratings. It is near the central star in projection, so the determination of its physcial conditions may establish the global morphology of the nebula. Primary WFPC2-2 position across the GTO WFPC2 location ORIENT = 235 deg -- This proposed WFPC2 position revisits the Cycle 5 GTO field (GTO/AUG 5775). Those observations were taken using the F656N, F502N, and F673N filters. We propose to use the F658N and F487N filters to observe this region and answer the outstanding questions discussed earlier in the proposal (i.e., the N abundance and reddening at high spatial resolution). Based on the overhead of the WFPC2-1 pointing, and peak surface brightness flux values of F(6584, 4861) = (6.0, 0.67), the OH time and S/N for the desired exposure times are 19m for the first, 16m for the remaining exposures, and S/N(6584, 4861) = (47, 11) PP. We will use the STIS in parallel to observe the emission from the extended O iii bubble. Real Time Justification ----------------------- The non-symmetric FOV of the WFPC-2 requires us to call out specific ORIENTS for the proposed observations. The ORIENTS chosen for positions STIS-1 and STIS -2 are driven both by the positions of the bright knots in the GTO field and the desire to place the parallel WFPC-2 FOV on the E side of the nebula. The ORIENT of STIS-3 is chosen to place the STIS slit across the brightest knot in O iii and HAlpha in the NW ``breakout" region, while at the same time placing the parallel WFPC-2 FOV across the outer shock interface in the N of the nebula, adjacent to the existing GTO field. The ORIENT of the WFPC2-1 position is chosen to place the camera FOV on the ``breakout" region while placing the STIS aperture on a known O iii bright knot close to the ionizing star. The ORIENT chosen for WFPC2-2 repeats and overlays the WFPC2 FOV on the existing GTO dataset for the reasons detailed in the proposal.
