Abstract Studies of faint, distant galaxies have greatly advanced in recent years. It is now possible to observe hundreds of galaxies out to z=1 and in the range 3 < z < 4.5, yet the redshift range 1 < z <3 remains largely unexplored. Galaxies selected by MgII absorption lines detected in quasar spectra are associated with normal galaxies up to redshifts z=1.2. We are extending this work to z = 2.5. We are already obtaining deep ground-based optical and near-infrared (VRIJK') images of fields around quasars with MgII absorbers. We propose obtaining far-UV and CCD images of our QSO fields with STIS. The aims of the observing program are: (1) Identify galaxies which produce MgII absorption using the Lyman drop-out technique. The 912Angstrom\ Lyman break is observed at 2100Angstrom\ -- 3200Angstrom\ for 1.3 < z < 2.5 so these galaxies will be absent from far-UV images below 2000Angstrom. (2) Obtain high resolution images to study MgII galaxy morphology. This can be accomplished extremely efficiently with STIS 50CCD imaging. Our main scientific goals are: (1) Find garden variety L^* galaxies at z ~ 2 when the Universe is 20-25\ as were found in the Steidel & Dickinson (1995) sample of MgII absorbers at z < 1.2. (2) Study the evolutionary history of MgII selected galaxies. If they are not typical L^* galaxies at z ~ 2 as they are at lower redshifts, we will determine the redshift at which this change occurs. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8572( 7) - 02/04/02 15:16 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We propose 22 orbits of STIS imaging of 11 MgII galaxy target fields in cycle 9. The orbits will be evenly split between 50CCD Imaging and FUV-MAMA imaging with F25QTZ. FUV- MAMA Imaging In the far-UV imaging, we will identify the galaxies which produce MgII absorption by using the Lyman drop-out technique. The 912 Angstrom\ Lyman break is observed at 2100Angstrom\ -- 3200Angstrom\ for 1.3 < z < 2.5. Using the STIS FUV-MAMA we can image below 2000Angstrom\ and the MgII galaxies at 1.3 < z < 2.5 will drop from the images while the most common interlopers, galaxies at z ~ 0.5, will remain. We will detect lower redshift galaxies down to AB magnitudes of ~ 25 in 3000 seconds with a S/N of ~ 5-10. These galaxies might otherwise be confused in our optical images with higher redshift candidates at 1.3 < z < 2.5. The STIS field of view provides a perfect match for the expected impact parameters of MgII absorbers at 1.3 < z < 2.5, ranging from 10--60 kpc. Since 10 arcseconds is approximately 80 kpc for z > 1 (H_0=65, q_0=0.125) the 25 * 25 arcsecond field of view will include the MgII galaxies. The F25QTZ filter provides excellent throughput from Lambda = 1500Angstrom\ to Lambda = 1900Angstrom, and admits almost no light longward of 2000Angstrom. It also blocks geocoronal Lyman-Alpha and OI (1302) airglow. It is the optimal choice for broadband, far- UV imaging, when a low background is desired. Though the high redshift quasars in the fields we are observing are optically bright (R~19), they will not appear in the far-UV band due to their own Lyman break and intervening neutral hydrogen absorption from the Lyman- Alpha forest. 50CCD Imaging For the CCD imaging, we only require morphological information, as we have ground-based colors. The most efficient way to obtain this is STIS 50CCD imaging. In 1 orbit (~ 3000 seconds) we can obtain very high S/N data (~ 50-100) for our typical MgII galaxy with an R magnitude of 23- 24.
