Abstract We propose to obtain third epoch WFPC2 observations of a rich field in Baade's Window. In just three orbits, we will be able to measure very accurate proper motions for ~ 13, 000 Galactic bulge stars down to V = 23. Such a large number of stars, combined with color information, a relatively long baseline, and the high spatial resolution of HST, will enable an unprecedented opportunity to model the structure and dynamics of the Galactic bulge and bar populations. In addition, by selecting stars on the basis of their proper motions, we will be able to refine the color-magnitude distributions of stars in the bulge and the bar, and thus the corresponding initial mass functions and chemical enrichment histories. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8574( 2) - 03/06/00 15:34 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ The observations we propose would be taken at the same pointing and orientation as the original F555W and F814W WFPC2 observations published by Holtzman et al. (1998). We will adopt a similar spread of exposure times and gain settings to achieve high dynamic range. range. The Holtzman et al. observations used exposure times of 2 * 1000s, 2 * 200s, and 1 * 20s in each filter, for a total of 4840 seconds of integration time. These observations, along with their associated setup time and overheads, required just under three orbits to complete in Cycle 5. We are therefore requesting the same total time for the 3rd epoch images. It is important to go just at least as deep as the first- epoch WFPC2 observations in each filter so as to not to severely degrade the signal-to-noise ratio, and thus the centering accuracy, at V = 23 and below for both blue and red stars. However, in view of the recently recognized value of dithering both for photometry and for astrometry, we will split the exposures in each filter into 4 half-pixel dithers optimized for spatial resolution.
