Abstract We propose to utilize the unique capabilites of STIS and WFPC2 in order to study the spatial and seasonal variations in ozone, condensates, and dust in the Martian atmosphere. The data obtained promise to be critical in addressing recent breakthroughs in understanding the basic radiative, transport, and microphysical processes that provide for both long-term and short-term balance within the global Mars climate system. Observations will be obtained between late November 2000, when the solar elongation of Mars first exceeds 50degrees, through June 2001 at which time the angular size of the planet will be almost 21 arc seconds and the effective resolution at the sub- earth point will be 15 km/pixel. The season on Mars during this period is summer in the northern hemisphere, providing an opportunity to revisit the equatorial cloud belt previously discovered by HST and further examine the important interplay between water vapor and clouds during this season. These observations represent a unique opportunity to study these atmospheric phenomena following the loss of Mars Climate Orbiter. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8577( 11) - 07/30/01 08:52 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We propose combined Mars WFPC2 and STIS observations totaling 17 orbits between late November, 2000 (when the solar elongation of Mars exceeds 50=B0= ) through June, 2001 (when the angular size of the planet will be almost 21 arc seconds and the effective resolution at the sub earth point will be 15 km/pixel). The season on Mars during this period is summer in the Northern Hemisphere. This provides our first opportunity to obtain STIS observations of the aphelion cloud belt, observe circumpolar meteorology associated with the north polar hood formation in late summer, and determine aerosol and ozone variations throughout the northern summer season. The period around L_S =3D 140degrees\ is especially interesting because of remarkable changes in clouds, atmospheric water vapor, and meteorology which occur then. The Cycle 9 period also provides a unique opportunity for combined HST/Mars orbiter observations, as future Mars missions will not carry dedicated atmospheric investigations. In order to achieve these goals, we propose temporally spaced pairs and triplets of visits by STIS and WFPC on consecutive orbits that will provide the coverage needed to determine the seasonal behaviors of ozone and condensate opacities. The pairs and triplets will be targeted to the same face of Mars in order to separate the desired seasonal dependencies from geographical variation The pairs and triplets consist respectively of an orbit of UV WFPC exposures followed by an orbit of STIS spectral scans and two orbits of WFPC2 exposures separated by an orbit of STIS spectral scans. The triplet orbit observations provide for the proposed cloud- tracked wind measurements. We divide the period of Cycle 9 available for observation into three periods: L_S =3D 90- 130degrees\ the equatorial cloud band is prominent and northern hemisphere water vapor is maximum; L_S =3D 130- 150degrees\ when the northern hemisphere climate changes and the water disappears; and L_S =3D 150-185degrees\ when cyclonic activity dominates in the polar regions. One orbit pair observation will be scheduled during each of the first and last periods, and two during the crucial transition. One orbit triplet observation will be scheduled in each of the three seasonal periods. Real Time Justification ----------------------- The pairs and triplets must be scheduled on consecutive orbits of HST. noindent Support of Current Mars Exploration Program \medskip The Hubble Space Telescope continues to offers a significant contribution to studies of the Martian atmosphere and climate. It can provide unique scientific data in support of NASA's goals in solar system exploration and will, in addition, support spacecraft involved in the NASA Mars Exploration Program. Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) is currently observing Mars from an orbit that is almost circular and fixed relative to the sun in such a way that the local time on the illuminated side of the planet is 1400 at the spacecraft's nadir. The Mars Orbiter Camera (MOC) on MGS maps Mars daily at a constant resolution of 8 km/pixel (using a hard wired variable summing algorithm) in two broad wavelength bands: violet (400-450 nm) and red (575-625 nm). Because there is no scan platform; MOC is always targeted at the nadir. From the nominal orbital height of 378 km, the wide angle cameras images are bounded by the horizon; at the equator, this means that local times all images comprising the map range from 12:17 to 15:43 Although MGS will clearly obviate some monitoring goals that motivated the previous HST Mars programs, there are several important ways in which HST images and spectra can complement the spacecraft maps and provide unique information. o Concurrent HST and spacecraft imaging make it possible to address the diurnal dependence of atmospheric phenomena that is missing from MCO orbiter data alone. HST observations provide extended local time coverage relative to the 1 hour local time coverage obtained from Mars spacecraft observations., o HST UV images and spectra are quantitatively optimized for measurements of Mars atmospheric ozone. The proposed STIS and WPFC2 UV observations of ozone have been proven in past HST cycle observations (see below). The HST imaging observations are also especially valuable for modeling opacities due to condensate clouds and dust in the Martian atmosphere, and the wavelength-dependent absorption properties of the dust aerosols. o Mars spacecraft observations from MGS do not allow wind field measurements below polar latitudes, due to viewing limitations. HST Cloud-tracked winds at low-to- mid latitudes are an important complement to MCO atmospheric measurements and Mars GCM's., o STIS UV determinations of atmospheric ozone, water ice clouds, and cloud-tracked winds will relate directly to temperature, water vapor, and aerosols determined by MGS experiments.
