Abstract We propose to use the unparalleled resolution and sensitivity of WFPC2 to search for very low-mass (VLM) companions to a complete sample of 120 late-M and L dwarfs, drawn mainly from the 2MASS and SDSS surveys. Our primary goal is to determine the multiplicity of M < 0.1 M_\odot dwarfs. In particular, we aim to identify binary systems suitable for long-term astrometric monitoring and mass measurement, and systems with cool, sub-1000K companions. With a dynamic range of Delta m_I ~ 5 mag. for separations Delta > 0arcs3, these observations are capable of detecting companions with mass ratios M_Sec / M_Pri > 0.4. Most of our targets are at distances between ~10 and 40 parsecs. Given a binary fraction and semi-major axis distribution similar to M dwarfs, approximately 20\ are expected to be resolved. With detection limits extending well below the hydrogen-burning limit to Gl229B-like temperature, these observations, supplemented by ground-based imaging and spectroscopy, will provide a definitive measurement of the binary fraction and mass- ratio distribution in VLM dwarfs. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8581( 4) - 09/08/00 15:35 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Our programme aims to detect cool, low-luminosity companions, and therefore demands both high spatial resolution and high sensitivity at long wavelengths. The F814W passband offers the highest sensitivity on WFPC2, but the F1042M filter offers better prospects of detecting Gl229B-like companions. The substantially increased potassium absorption in the latter objects depresses the continuum severely shortward of 8500 A, leading to (F1042M - F814W) colours exceeding 4 magnitudes. We therefore propose to obtain both F814W and F1042M Planetary Camera observations of the 120 late-M and L dwarfs on our target list. The L dwarfs in our sample have F814W magnitudes, determined directly from our spectra, between 17.5 and 20, while the late M dwarfs are between 15th and 18th magnitude. At those magnitudes, exposure times between 10 and 600 seconds are sufficient to give F814W peak fluxes for the target star which are between 0.2 and 0.5 of the saturation level, and dI > 5 magnitudes for detecting faint companions. Late M and L dwarfs have colours between 1.5 and 3 magnitudes in (I - 1042), and our targets should lie in the magnitude range 14 < 1042 < 17.5. The brightest targets have a peak flux at 0.2 of the saturation level in a 600 second exposure, with S/N=10 at 1042=20. The latter limit is 1 magnitude fainter than the magnitude of Gl 229B at 30 parsecs.
