Abstract He II Ly alpha absorption at 304(1+z) Angstrom is a far more sensitive tracer of the intergalactic medium (IGM) than its H I counterpart. The recent detections of such absorption in four quasars, albeit with limited data quality and a small sample size, demonstrate the great potential of such a probe. The lines of sight toward the majority of z~ 3 quasars are intercepted by Lyman-limit systems, and these quasars' UV flux is cut off before reaching the He II Ly alpha feature. As a result of the SDSS, a number of bright (V<17.5), z>2.5 quasars are being identified. We propose a STIS snapshot survey to confirm the UV detectability of about 20 such quasars, in order to select the candidates for follow-up spectroscopic observations with STIS, COS, or FUSE. Future high-quality HST spectra of these new quasars will enable us to map the 70% of the IGM whose properties remain largely unknown, and to set strict constraints on cold-dark-matter models of structure formation in the universe and reveal the evolution of the IGM from the epoch when the first generation of galaxies were formed down to z ~ 3. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8582( 6) - 10/16/00 10:24 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ This proposal is a modified version, as decribed below. The target number for this project is approximately 20. Six bright sample objects are listed on p. 2: the first three are from the SDSS data, and the rest from a backup list made from the quasar catalog of Veron-Cetty & Veron (1998) and the DPSS. We have confirmed that none of these quasars have been observed or planned with HST. As new SDSS data will be taken starting in Spring 2000, we will update this list accordingly. A typical night of SDSS data covers about 70 deg^2, so it is almost certain that many new candidates may be added before the start of Cycle 9. We are continuing to confirm and pre- screen the additional quasar candidates from both the follow- up SDSS fiber spectroscopic observations and from our own observations with the Apache Point Observatory's (APO) 3.5-m telescope and the HET 9m telescope. This project is expected to find about 100, 000 quasars. Fig. 3 illustrates how these quasars are selected by their distinct colors in imaging data. (Note also that the availability of deep 5- color, SDSS calibrated CCD frames for each quasar and the surrounding fields, insures that we can confirm overlight safety over the entire MAMA FOV, and for arbitrary roll angle). Most of these candidates would have large B-V color because of the intervening absorption. However, the FUV flux in a small number of them will recover as models predict. The tabulated B-V color for each target is only an estimate. The spectra will cover the wavelengths as short as 3500 Angstrom. With a resolution of 2 Angstrom, strong Mg II 2800 and/or CIV 1549 absorption that are associated with a LLS may enable us to eliminate these candidates. We estimate that the SDSS spectroscopic database will allow us to detect C IV with EW > 0.4 A and Mg II with EW > 1 A, assuming a S/N level of 20 and 10, at the respective wavelengths, for quasars of V < 16.5. Metal absorption at such a level is characteristic for LLS with N > 10^17 cm^-2. If a quasar spectrum does not show a Mg II absorption at >~ 3500 Angstrom, a severe Lyman limit cutoff is unlikely to take place at >~ 1140 Angstrom (912 (1+z_a)). This is the same strategy of the previous HST search for He II absorption (Jakobsen et al. 1994; Tytler et al. 1995). Because the candidates are relatively bright, from our previous snapshot projects we estimate 20 minutes per field, including all overhead times. Targets are pre-selected from the SDSS quasars that do not show trace of Mg II or C IV absorption lines. Since the targets have been pre-selected, the success rate should be significantly higher than 10%, a value for random selection. We used the on-line STIS exposure-time calculator to estimate the data quality. Originally, the observation mode was chosen as imaging. However, we have decided to swatch to spectroscopy with a slit because of the concerns over the possible violation of the MAMA bright- source limit due to field stars. A request of change was made, and the TTRB has approved it. Simulations suggest that to produce a more desirable result. For the faintest sources (V=18, or f_Lambda = 2X10^-16 ergcm^-2A^-1 and with the FUV-MAMA detector, the G140L grating and 52X0.5 slit , 8-minute exposure will yield a S/N = 1 and 2.4 per resolution unit @1300A, respectively for an average or low sky background. The calculated S/N level, with further binning, is sufficient to verify whether the object has a detectable UV flux to carry out He II Ly-alpha observations. According to the HST Cycle 9 Call for Proposals, a typical target acquisition is 12 min, and the instrumental overhead for the MAMA imager is 5 min. Thus the total required time for one target is 25 min, which is well below the 45-min ceiling for snapshots and is more flexible to schedule. The target acquisition is checked with the on-line simulator. For our faintest sources, 15 sec exposure will yield approximately 5700 counts, and 44000 counts for the brightest. These count numbers will provide sufficient S/N for the acquisition and do not saturate the CCD detector. A redundancy check has confirmed that a few of the targets have been observed with STIS/CCD while the others have not been observed with HST. Since STIS/CCD cannot check the UV detectability, these observations are not duplications. This latest version reflects a change in six targets, as new candidates are brighter. Number 11, 16 -20 are new, replacing number 8-9, 11, 14-16 in the October 6 and earlier version.
