Abstract We propose to use the unique high-resolution optical and ultraviolet capabilities of HST as well as the resolution and sensitivity of Chandra to investigate the physics of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and the nature of their host galaxies. Our approach is three-pronged: 1) rapid HST ultraviolet spectroscopy and Chandra imaging obtained within two days of an outburst will allow us to probe the physics of the relativistic fireball and the nature of the ISM surrounding the GRB; 2) long-term optical monitoring of the optical transient (OT) will permit us to test the hypothesis that GRBs are frequently highly collimated and to determine whether supernovae underlie GRBs; 3) Chandra and HST observations of "dark" GRBs will allow us to probe one of the greater mysteries surrounding GRBs, the nature of the bursts without optical counterparts. The ultraviolet and x-ray observations will also obtain the metal and rmH_2 column densities to a number of OTs, as well as the extinction law of the dust in these hosts. The late-time optical images will elucidate the physics of the afterglow, as well as the morphology, structure and luminosity function of the host galaxies. Typical GRBs might be nearly a mag brighter. vspace-0.15in endfigure vspace-0.1in section*3 Fast UV TOOs with long -term follow-up vspace-0.15in We request 3 activations with a 12-24 hour turnaround, to allow us to observe GRBs in the UV approximately 36 hours after outburst. We request 6 orbits for the first visit of each activation. The better part of one orbit will be used for set-up and calibration. The remaining part of that orbit and the next will be used for G750L and G430L spectroscopy, so that we have a spectrum from 9000 to 3000 Angstrom to tie to the UV spectrum. The remaining 4 orbits will be used to obtain NUV prism spectra of the OT. The use of the prism is crucial to this program due to its high throughput. We have solved the calibration issues and written all necessary software for the prism (which is not fully supported by STScI) as part of our Cycle 8 program. Because our observation will require interruption of the normal schedule it should be possible to obtain 6 SAA- free orbits; if only 5 can be found, we will accept the small resulting loss of signal-to-noise. After the first TOO 6 orbit UV visit, we will begin a series of revisits, nearly identical to that described in the next section on long-term TOOs, so that each GRB observed in the UV will also be well- observed over a timespan of about a year. An extra-orbit is requested compared to the Long-Term TOOs to help bridge the gap between day 1.5 and day 21 (ground-based observations will also assist here). A total of 37 orbits (including 15 orbit FAST TOO overhead) is requested for each of these activations. vspace-0.1in section*3 Additional Long-term TOOs vspace-0.15in These TOOs will begin 3 weeks after outburst. We request three such activations. Each activation will contain about 6 visits, with the length of each visit ranging between 1 and 5 orbits, depending on time after outburst. The visits will sample the light curve from 21 days to about 1 yr. Times between observations will grow nearly geometrically, though a higher sampling frequency will be used early on when a relatively rapidly varying SN might compose part of the light curve. Images will be taken in both the 50CCD and 50LP passbands of STIS (we calculate that these two very broad filters are as good as F606W and F814W on WFPC2 at determining spectral slopes in equal amounts of time, but provide final images with far higher signal-to- noise). A total 15 orbits is requested per TOO. vspace-0.1in section*2 Dark GRBs vspace- 0.15in Two observations by Chandra will be used to obtain the position of GRBs without apparent optical counterparts (m >~ 23.5; less than one day after burst). Our ability to localize the GRB should be limited only by the absolute astrometric accuracy of Chandra, <~ 1". From the HDF-N and HDF-S images we estimate a <~ 10\ a magnitude of 25. These observations will be coordinated with Keck and VLT IR images of the Chandra position boxes. Three orbits of imaging with the 50CCD filter of STIS is requested per TOO. Real Time Justification ----------------------- The Supporting Team and Multiwavelength Ground-based Follow-up The proposed observations are technically challenging and address exciting science that crosses traditional subfield and wavelength boundaries. We have assembled a diverse team with the experience and expertise required to plan the HST observations, carry out the necessary multiwavelength and ground-based observing, and reduce and interpret the data. Among our team members are the first authors of the papers which reported the first OT associated with a GRB, the first host galaxy of a GRB and the first GRB redshift. Our collaboration also includes theorists noted for their seminal contributions to the field of GRBs. Members of the Beppo-Sax and BATSE groups are on this proposal, as is the lead of the HETE observatory, who represents his entire group. Our team includes members of the STScI STIS team and STIS IDT, and an STScI staff expert in imaging -- individuals who are also notable for their work on high-redshift galaxies and GRBs. We plan to continue the policy we have started successfuly in Cycle 8 of inviting the high-energy team which localizes a burst to nominate members to join our effort on the HST follow-up. Our group will bring substantial ground and space-based observing capabilities to bear in support of this program. Members of the team have on-going GRB programs at La Palma, the NTT, NOT, WIYN, Palomar 5-m, PLANET, Keck, the VLT, and we soon hope to add Lick, Magellan and the IRTF. Furthermore, we have on-going collaborations with staff members at Westerbork and IRAM. And the HETE team, with which we will formally collaborate, has a limited amount of time in Chandra Cycle 1. HST time awarded to this group to study GRBs has already resulted in a number of important results, all of which have been rapidly disseminated in telegrams and refereed publications. vspace- 0.1in section*Chandra Observations vspace-0.15in Chandra request: 65 kiloseconds, 4 GRBs The HST observations described in this proposal by themselves provide a powerful new probe of the physics of GRBs and the nature of their hosts; nonetheless, the addition of Chandra adds substantially to their scientific value. Six GRB TOOs, for a total of 60 ks, have been authorized in Chandra Cycle 1. However, without the support of the UV observations proposed here, these observations will suffer from the problem which has so far plagued optical/X-ray comparisons of GRBs -- without an excellent knowledge of the Galactic and host extinction the extrapolation of the optical slope to X-ray energies becomes wildly uncertain, and greatly reduces ones ability to constrain the physics of the afterglow. The Cycle 1 TOOs also divide 60 ks among 6 GRBs. We will allocate a comparable amount of time to 2 TOOs, to perform a far more powerful investigation of the astrophysics of the afterglow. Additionally, our two Chandra TOOs allocated to "dark" GRBs, will allow an important study of a phenomenon that small number statistics could otherwise completely exclude from AXAF observation. We request that our proposed coordinated Chandra imaging observations be made with the standard ACIS-S chip set in TE mode. This will place the aim point near the center of ACIS S-3 chip, optimizing our soft X-ray sensitivity at the expense of a mild loss of spectral resolution. All of our sensitivity calculations have been made assuming an on-axis exposure with this chip. As a fiducial burst afterglow event, we have chosen a hypothetical event whose afterglow spectral and time decay properties are similar to those of the well-studied GRB 970228, but which is half the strength of this relatively bright event. Specifically, we have assumed a photon spectrum dN/dE \propto E^-2 (T/mbox 1\ d)^-1.3, a column density of N_ H=10^21 atom cm^-2, and a 2--10 keV flux of 5 * 10^-13 erg cm^-2 s^-1 at T=1 d. These parameters are a reasonably typical (and indeed somewhat conservative) assumption for the characteristics of a GRB afterglow. 2 GRBs to be done in concert with HST Fast UV TOOs: 50 ks On two GRBs we will request four observations each. The first observation on each GRB will be 12.5 ks long, and should overlap the HST UV observations we will request on these two objects. Another 12.5 ks will be devoted to three further observations on days 2.5, 5 and 10 after burst. Using XSPEC simulations of our fiducial afterglow, we estimate that the 12.5 ks observation at T=1.5 d will allow us to simultaneously measure the total flux to 5\ X-ray afterglow to +/- 0.1, as well as the absorption column density to 15\ until day 10 the absorption column density will be assumed. Exposure times will be sufficient to allow us to measure a power-law decay index to ~ 0.1. 2 Dark GRBs: 15 ks In two cases, where searches have been done in the first day after a GRB, and no OT has been found to m ~ 24, we will ask for rapid (with 48 hours) Chandra TOOs of 2.5 ks. The fiducial GRB above would provide about 100 photons in such an integration at day 3.5. We will then ask that Chandra return to each field about 10 days later and integrate for 5 ks. The GRB will have fallen by at least a factor of three (and more probably a factor of five) by this time, allowing an easy identification.
