Abstract Are Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) at redshift z~3 centrally- concentrated, massive starbursts at the bottoms of deep potential wells of dark matter, or isolated, irregular, low- mass starburst galaxies? One significant barrier to deeper understanding of LBGs is the lack of available UV data on local star-forming galaxies for comparison. To address that lack, we propose STIS FUV imaging and spectroscopy of two well-defined samples of low-mass starburst galaxies, one in the local universe (z<0.1) and another at intermediate redshifts (0.2 < z < 0.7). Both samples show optical sizes, morphologies, emission line widths, and luminosities comparable to those of LBGs at z=3, and are therefore probably the best local analogs and testbeds for further study of LBGs. Our main goals are to: (1) explore the morphologies, surface brightness distributions, and half-light radii of nearby starforming galaxies in the FUV, near Ly-alpha; (2) search for systematic differences among UV, optical, and near-IR morphologies and structural parameters; (3) investigate the intrinsic emission and absorption spectra near Ly-alpha\ of starbursting dwarf galaxies, with special attention to Ly- alpha\ profiles and interstellar and stellar photospheric absorption from Si II, O I, C II, Si IV, and C IV; (4) measure their FUV-optical colors and dust extinction properties; and (5) test the hypothesis that low-mass starbursts are the local counterparts of LBGs. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8590( 8) - 05/17/01 12:01 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We are proposing to observe 12 HII galaxies at z=0 with STIS- FUV in imaging and longslit spectroscopic mode, and 14 luminous blue compact galaxies at z~0.5 with STIS-NUV in imaging mode only. noindent Why this sample? To test whether Lyman Break Galaxies at z=3 are plausibly the distant cousins of nearby actively star-forming HII and blue compact galaxies, we need to examine a well- defined, sufficiently large sample in the rest-FUV. Of the various emission line and HII galaxy surveys completed to date, the UCM survey has probably the most complete followup and widest wavelength coverage in hand. The 12 galaxies listed here have already been culled out of the original ELG list, confirmed spectroscopically, imaged deeply in the optical and near-IR, and selected for their high luminosity but low mass. The z=0.5 sample also represents the most extreme starbursts available, i.e. high SFR and luminosity but low mass, at those redshifts. Again, extensive ground- and space-based optical and near-IR data in hand make these among the best- studied candidates. noindent Exposure Times We have used the STIS ETC to estimate exposure times and S/N. We assume an O5 spectrum and central surface brightness Mu^0_B > 18, or 5.8* 10^-15 erg/s/cm^2/Angstrom/arcsec^2. We have verified that we do not exceed or approach the Bright Object Limit. For the low-redshift sample, we need 10 minutes imaging with F25QTZ(FUV) for each source to reach S/N=10. For the spectra of the low-redshift sample, 40 minutes with G140L (610Angstrom coverage at R~1000 or Delta v = 300 km/s) grating and the 52*0.2 arcsec slit will achieve S/N = 10, so approximately one orbit per object is required. For the z=0.5 sample, where 1+z^4 cosmological surface brightness dimming comes into play for our V~22 sources, we estimate we can achieve per resel S/N~30 in the central region and S/N~10 1-2 arcsec away from center in 40 minutes, slightly under 1 orbit. noindent Path from Data to Science We anticipate the following steps will be necessary to complete the project: (1) reduce all images and spectra using standard pipeline software; (2) perform detailed photometric image analysis, including bulge/disk decomposition, radial profiles, half- light radii, Petrosian apertures, asymmetry, central concentration, and multiplicity, using our custom software; (3) combine spatially resolved photometry with in-hand optical and near-IR data to derive colors and color gradients; (4) compare all of the above to same for our extensive sample of LBGs from HDF-N and -S; (5) fit Ly-alpha emission and absorption profiles using outflow models, compare low- and intermediate-redshift samples and to LBGs; (6) measure absorption line equivalent widths and, if possible, velocity profiles, for direct comparison with LBGs and starburst models with differing metallicities.
