Abstract Small nuclear black holes are the last major unexplored part of BH parameter space. We propose to search for the smallest BHs that HST can possibly find. Past studies have concentrated on massive, distant spheroids, overlooking many BH candidates on our own doorstep. The minimum detectable BH mass can be driven down by nearly two orders of magnitude by focusing on the nearest galaxies. We can easily reach down to 10^5 M(sun), the probable mass of the ``first born'' objects that (in other cases) grow or merge up to the quasar mass range. This strategy also favors disklike ``pseudobulges'', which probably formed differently from classical spheroids and which therefore provide a fresh perspective on the relationship between BHs and their embryonic environments. Our complete sample of 20 nearby galaxies includes all unstudied objects within 7.5 Mpc, brighter than M_B = -17, with well defined, unobscured centers. STIS long-slit spectra will be used to measure BH masses using both gas and stellar kinematics, comparing the results whenever practical. Emission- line and broad-band images are sought to characterize the central morphology of gas and stars. Of prime importance is the maser galaxy NGC 4258, which provides a unique chance to calibrate both stellar-- and gas-- dynamical BH masses against the impressively accurate maser BH mass. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8591( 7) - 02/13/01 19:26 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ headaSample selection strategy To construct the complete sample, we began with a complete catalog of about 75 galaxies of all Hubble types earlier than Sm and nearer than 7.5 -/+c citetully. We then removed 10 previously studied galaxies (except NGC 4258) and further culled the list for objects with well-defined, unobscured centers (rejecting about 25 objects that were either amorphous or heavily obscured). Finally, we applied a cut at total luminosity M_B = -17, dropping another 25 objects. The resulting list of 15 objects is listed in Table 1. During this procedure, we noticed 5 more unstudied galaxies nearer than 3 -/+c that had been excluded only because of the magnitude cut. These offer such a good opportunity to reduce detected BH masses still further that we append them at the end of the list. To assess the consistency of this and other investigations based on different methods, and to collect a reasonable sample, we propose duplicate observations of both gaseous and stellar kinematics wherever feasible. We judge one visit (6 orbits) to be a reasonable amount of time to commit to any one object, which limits such double investigations to 5 objects: NGC 4258, IC 342, NGC 4826, NGC 3344 & NGC 4736. Of these, NGC 4258 is so valuable that we exceed this limit to improve the signal-to-noise ratio. The five very small nearby objects divide into two groups: three have tiny bulges that are at best barely resolved with HST. Because these nuclei are unresolved and bright relative to their surroundings, spectroscopy can be better done from the ground than from space, and we are proposing imaging only for these objects --- we are observing them spectroscopically from the ground. However, in two cases there is resolved material (in one case stars, the other gas), and in these cases we propose spectroscopy with HST to detect rotation and a velocity dispersion gradient. headaGas kinematics Eleven of the objects are good candidates for gas kinematics, based on HST H-alphaph \ or \palph \ imaging citeboker or our own ground- based H-alphaph \ spectra, which indicate that the emission extends inwards to the center and appears disk-like (or at least symmetrical). In all of these cases we propose H- alphaph \ STIS spectroscopy with the slit centered along the major axis of the starlight distribution; two flanking exposures above and below the major axis are added to constrain the geometry. Exposure estimates (leading to totals of 1 or 2 orbits per target) are estimated from citehf1, hf2. They are designed to reach a S/N of about 25/px in the line at a resolution of 0" .1. Bower et al. cite4374 have shown in NGC 4374 that data of this quality permit recovery of the gas dynamics even in the presence of multiple gas components. In the special case of NGC 4258, in view of its importance, a 5-position map is proposed. For the gas spectra, the G750M grating set at 6568 Angstrom \ yields a 2-px resolution of 1.1 Angstrom, or 50 kms \ with the 0\s.1 slit (no binning). With a target S/N of 25 per px, we should be able to detect rotations and dispersions down to ~ 30 kms. At a spatial resolution of 0\s.1, this yields a detectable raw BH mass of ~10^5 D(- /+c) M(sun), or 10^5-6 M(sun) for nearby small-bulge late-type systems, as reflected in Table 1. We will use the 52X0.1 slit for one centered slit and the 52X0.2 slit for two flanking exposures for more light where the resolution is not critical. When present, gas is more concentrated than stars in the HST images, and there should consequently be little difficulty in subtracting the stellar continuum from the emission lines. Galaxies with bright continuum also tend to have bright N II lines, which lie well outside the stellar absorption feature than can swamp H- alphaph . headaStellar kinematics For 11 galaxies in which the nuclear starlight is both bright and resolved, we propose centered, major-axis aligned, stellar spectra in the IR calcium triplet. For this we rely on our extensive experience with STIS in Cycle 7. Continuum count rates from WFPC2 broad-band images were used to estimate continuum surface brightnesses at 0" .1, and the STIS ETC program was used to estimate the exposure times. In one case (for spectroscopy) where a WFPC2 image was unavailable, an H-band image from NICMOS was scaled using galaxies observed with both cameras. The exposure times are designed to reach a S/N of 30/px. The G750M grating set at 8561 Angstrom \ yields a 2-px resolution of 1.1 Angstrom, or 39 kms with the 0\s.1 slit (no binning). With the target S/N of 30/px, rotations and dispersions should be measureable down to ~ 40 kms. For systems that are rotating rapidly and are therefore easily interpreted (as we expect for these spiral bulges) this should yield mass estimates only slightly inferior to the gas kinematics. The minimum detectable masses should be M_min= Sigma^2 r/G. In the critical case of NGC 4258, we compute an exposure suitable for a higher S/N = 50. All exposure estimates have been checked against our successful Cycle 7 experience with STIS and are consistent. At this point we plan all stellar kinematics through the 52X0.1 slit to achieve the maximum resolution consistent with the telescope PSF but will reconsider at Phase 2. We plan flanking observations with the 52X0.2 slit for NGC 4258 only. beginminipage6.in centerlineTable 1: Proposed Targets hspace*-0.1cm begintabularlllclcccccccc noalign noalign Galaxy & Name & Type footnoteHubble type and bulge type (b = classic bulge, pb = pseudobulge, : = uncertain). & D footnoteAll quantities are based on \ho = 80 kms -/+c ^-1. & M_B, bulge & min<=ft\ M_o \right\ footnoteMinimum detectable BH mass as described in text. & Surface footnotenear V brightness at 0" .1 in mags/ square arcsec. * indicates that we have scaled from NICMOS H image (ref 21). & Line footnoteH-alphaph\ flux in units of 10^-15 ergs sec^-1 cm^-2 AA^-1 from ref 23, 24. & multicolumn2cStars footnoteThe first column (s) is the spectroscopy request, the second (i) is for imaging. & multicolumn2cGas\footnoteThe first column (s) is the spectroscopy request, the second (i) is for imaging. , & & & Mpc & & log(M(sun))& Brightness &flux & s & i & s &i , noalign N4258 & M106 & Sbc, pb & 6.80 & - 18.59 & 6.98 & 15.5 & 6 & 12 & 1 & 2 & 1 & & & & & & & & & N5102 & - & S0,: & 3.50 & -16.89 & 6.23 & 13.7 & - & 2 & 1 & & 1 U2847 footnote Our ground based H- alphaph \ spectra show rotation at about 50 kms, marginally inconsistent with a ground CO stellar dispersion 26. Flat-field errors in STIS due to fringing near 8500 Angstrom \ have proven tractable when calibrated with contemporaneous flats; no such problem is expected at H-alphaph . All single- orbit spectra will be CR split. We request 2 single orbit spectra of template stars to augment the available library and verify instrumental stability since cycle 7. headaEmission-line imaging Previous emission-line spectroscopy of gaseous BH disks with HST shows that the innermost emission lines are usually broadened, suggesting that random motions as well as circular motions affect the gas kinematics. To incorporate such motions in a dynamical model, the gas distribution, including its profile with radius, is essential (note, this type of gas modeling has not been done before). The gas is usually barely resolved, and its image will need to be deconvolved. Experience shows that 2000 e^- in the central pixel are needed for high-quality deconvolution. Thus, for each gas -spectroscopy galaxy, a narrow-band HAlpha image is requested (if not already available) to record this minimum count. Typical exposure times are 1800-3000 sec and are estimated from citehf1, hf2. Since all of our objects are nearby and have redshifts less than 807 kms we can use the regular narrow-band filters (F656N, F658N). headaContinuum imaging For all objects, the central stellar distribution will need to be deconvolved to model stellar kinematics and subtract the contribution of stars to the central potential. The minimum exposure requirement is similar to that for narrow-band imaging, namely 2000 e^ -/px. A V-band image is requested if none is available, based on the estimated V-band surface brightnesses at 0\s.1 in Table 1. F547M is used as a surrogate for V, to avoid emission at 4861Angstrom, 5007Angstrom, 6300-6363Angstrom, and 6563Angstrom. Our experience shows that dust does not adversely affect the continuum subtraction, and in many of our targets an I-band exposure is already available, allowing us to interpolate a wavelength near H-alphaph \ if the color gradient requires.
