Abstract Resolving the nature of dark matter, at least some of which is baryonic, is an urgent problem. If baryonic dark matter is associated with luminous baryonic matter, MACHOs (massive compact objects) are the preferred candidate as inferred from gravitational microlensing of LMC stars. Given the uncertainties in the dynamical modeling of the dark components of the halo, a broad mass range for MACHO candidates merits consideration, from 0.01 M_sun to 1 M_sun. This includes the mass range of brown dwarfs and M dwarfs, whose contribution towards the dark mass is unknown. We propose to use HST to undertake a pixel microlensing study of M87 in order to: 1) probe the lower end of the M87 IMF via star-star lensing, 2) possibly obtain the first evidence of MACHOs in the halo of a galaxy other than our own, and 3) search for intracluster MACHOs. The program is challenging, but very feasible, with the HST. Over a period of 30 days and with half orbit exposures in each of two colors at a rate of one per day, we will observe approximately 1-2 events per day for a MACHO of mass 0.1 M_sun, with about 5 points of the lightcurve above 3 sigma. This provides a moderately high event significance threshold of S/N >= 10. The key factor that makes this project possible with the HST is the small pixel scale of the WFPC2, coupled with the small, stable PSF and superior photometric capabilities. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8592( 4) - 05/21/01 10:06 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Using the HST is the key factor for this project. Most importantly, the HST makes this project feasible due to the very small pixel resolution and stable PSF -- we see that the expected rate would be approximately 5 times lower for typical ground based telescopes, considering only the relative size of typical ground based PSFs and angular field of view. This is not the most punishing aspect however (see Figure 1a). The larger effective resolution of ground based telescopes drastically increases the amount of background light from the galaxy falling on each pixel and hence makes the amplification of a single star undetectable. In the simple case illustrated in the Figure 1a, the HST observations detect the peak with S/N = 5, while it is barely seen in an ideal ground based set of observations. Furthermore, the nature of this program requires monitoring the light curves on the individual pixel scale over a long time baseline. To take the entire data set and perform the microlensing analysis, there are two main alignment considerations: 1) the geometric alignment which maps the individual exposures to a fixed reference image and 2) the photometric alignment which required transforming the individual image photometry to a common system. Furthermore, any fluctuations in the effective pixel resolution (due to geometric distortion, seeing fluctuations, etc) need to be understood and corrected as fairly precise photometry is required for this experiment. HST is the only telescope that can successfully attempt to observe microlensing in a distant galaxy such as M87. As we see from above, the main consideration is the pixel resolution. Furthermore, the very stable, and precise photometric calibrations possible with the HST will be key to the photometric alignment of the images. The punchline is the following: using the WFPC2 with 1 orbit integrations sampled at a rate of 1 day over a baseline of 30 days will yield an event rate of approximately 1-2 per day, with a significance threshold of S/N = 10 per event. We will observe the same field for 1 orbit/day x 30 days in 2 colors per orbit for a total of 30 orbits. The exposure sequence will consist of four 260s dithered exposures in F814W, followed by one 400s exposure in F606W to test achromaticity. The dither- pattern will be done in a 2*2 square pattern with 0.5 WFC pixel steps. The exposure set will thus produce a Nyquist sampled ``super- image'' in F814W for each orbit and a standard image in F606W in each orbit. The event location will be well known in F814W, which can be used to check the F606W exposures. Exposures taken on subsequent visits will be positioned in a separate dither pattern, again a 2*2 square pattern of 0.5 WFC pixel steps. This amounts to a crude dither for the F606W exposures. However, Nyquist-sampled images can be shifted and rotated without degradation or introduction of other artifacts to match small positional differences between exposure sets. Exposures from bracketing sets will be used to remove cosmic-rays from a given orbital set. Using a dithered set also enables the unaliased observation of all lensing events, improving both the detectability and uniformity of coverage of the events (Lauer 1999). In contrast, doing standard exposures without dithering places strong demands on repeat pointing performance and risks confusing the lens events with variations in the high-spatial frequency SBF (surface- brightness fluctuation) pattern that occurs with miss-matches of aliased images (as the WFC produces). We will use two wavebands (F814W and F606W) to check the achromaticity of the flux brightening of microlensing candidates. The time scales of MACHOs of astrophysical interest (0.05 - 0.5 M_sun) are such that a 1 day sampling rate is sufficient to sample the light curves sufficiently finely. At the very center of the galaxy, the required brightness of the background star is quite large. To overcome this, we place the PC over the galaxy center. It's smaller pixel scale increases the S/N of an event. We are thus able to detect microlensing over a range 0" <= Theta <= 140" . (See Figure 1d.) STIS: We will use STIS in parallel to produce an image of a field in the halo of M87. This will be one the the deepest images ever taken of the M87 halo, and will be useful for determining the tip of the red giant branch, which can be used as a distance indicator.
