Abstract Much of our knowledge of elemental abundances in our own and other galaxies rests on emission line nebulae. Our recent CNO abundance determinations for PNe using optical recombination lines (ORLs) have yielded abundances systematically higher than the `standard' values deduced from UV/optical collisionally excited lines (CELs), with discrepancies covering a wide range from 1--20. In the extreme case of NGC 6153, multi-waveband analysis has yielded CNO and Ne abundances from ORLs which are all about a factor of ten higher than the CEL values. Temperature fluctuations and density inhomogeneities fail to explain all the available data. Instead our analysis indicates that NGC 6153 may have experienced a recent ejection of H-deficient knots, similar to those observed in the `born-again' PN Abell 30. We propose to obtain deep STIS long-slit spectra for the well-resolved H- deficient knots of A 30 and to search for such knots in NGC 6153. The data will yield the spatially resolved temperature, density and ionization structure of the knots in Abell 30, and, for the first time, accurate ORL C and O abundances for them. The results will lead to a much better understanding of the physics of such knots and their effects on abundance determinations. The observations of NGC 6153 will allow us to test if the observed central peaking of its ORL C and O abundances is a consequence of a central concentration of similar H-deficient knots. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8594( 18) - 05/07/02 14:55 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ The H-deficient knots in Abell 30 have cometary structure (Fig. 1), with bright ~ 0.2" cores and tails several arcseconds in length, pointing away from the central star (CS; B=14.32 mag). The two bright polar knots, J1 and J3, separated by 14.0", are collinear with the CS, while the remaining ones form an equatorial ring. Due to ablation by the CS winds, the H-deficient gas is being photoevaporated and swept off in mass-loaded flows, mixing with the diffuse gas (Borkowski et al. 1995). The 52"*0.2" STIS/CCD slit will be centred on knot J3 at PA=67.0D, passing through an adjacent patch of nebulosity. Apart from optical spectra, we also wish to obtain a NUV-MAMA spectrum (with the 28"*0.2" slit) of the C III] 1907, 1909 doublet. Because of the large interstellar extinction towards NGC 6153, the C III] 1907, 1909 lines are too faint to be mapped with STIS in an affordable time for the required spatial resolution, and we thus concentrate on the optical spectrum. The 52"*0.2" slit will be centred on the CS (B=16.1 mag) at PA=118D, i.e. close to the value of 122.8D adopted by Liu et al. (1999b) for their ground-based observations (Fig. 2). We will bin the CCD by factors of 2 and 4 in the dispersion direction and along the slit, respectively, yielding 0.204/pix along the slit. The instrumental setup for the proposed observations and the exposure time estimates, based on the faintest line in each wavelength range that is critical to our scientific goals, are described below. The crucial lines we wish to measure are: 1) C III] 1907, 1909 (Abell 30 only), which will yield the CEL C^{2+} abundance. Also the 1909/1907 line ratio is a sensitive density diagnostic of high critical density, particularly suitable for searching for high-density condensations; 2) [O III] 4363, 4959, 5007, which will yield the [O III] forbidden line temperature and the CEL O^{2+} abundance; 3) [O II] 3726, 3729 doublet, which are of interest because Liu et al. (1999) find that this doublet, usually collisionally excited in ordinary nebulae, seems to be entirely excited by recombination in NGC 6153; 4) Density-diagnostic lines [Ar IV] 4711, 4740 and [S II] 6716, 6731. The [Ar IV] doublet has a high critical density, similar to C III] 1907, 1909; 5) The H Balmer discontinuity and high-n Balmer lines from H 10 to H 24. The ratio of the Balmer discontinuity to a Balmer line yields the Balmer-jump temperature, whereas the high-n Balmer line decrement is a sensitive density diagnostic, especially at high densities; 6) He I 4471, 5876, 6678 lines and He II 4686 line, which will yield He^+ and He^{2+} abundances (for Abell 30: of the three He I lines, only the strongest, 5876, will be used); 7) C II 4267 and C III 4647 (Abell 30 only), which will yield C^{2+} and C^{3+} ORL abundances. For Abell 30, the C^{2+} ionic abundance deduced from the 4267 line will be compared to those deduced from the UV CELs, 1907, 1909. For NGC 6153, the observations will allow us to test if the central peaking of the C^{2+}/H^+ abundance deduced from our ground-based spectra is a consequence of a concentration of the postulated H-deficient knots towards the nebular centre. In NGC 6153, only ~ 5 per cent of C is in the C^{3+} ion stage, and the small contribution of C^{3+} to the total C abundance can be estimated using the He^{2+}/He^+ abundance ratio; 8) O II 4649, the strongest O II ORL. This will yield the ORL O^{2+} abundance which can be compared to that derived from the [O III] 4959, 5007 CELs; 9) And finally H-alpha, used to obtain ionic abundances of heavy elements relative to H^+. Detecting H-beta is not trivial for the extremely H-deficient knots in Abell 30 and we will use the stronger H- alpha line instead. [Abell 30 only, G230M 1839--1929]: This will yield the C III] 1906.68, 1908.73 doublet, which will be well resolved for a spectral resolution of 0.62 Angstrom FWHM. An archival FOS UV spectrum of Knot J 3, obtained with an 0.86" aperture, yields a 1907, 1909 flux of 1.2*10^{-14} cgs. This, together with the WFPC2 images of Abell 30 (Borkowski et al. 1995), yields an estimated surface brightness S for the bright core of Knot J 3 of S(1907, 1909) ~ 1.2*10^{-13} cgs/(square)". The surface brightness in the tail is ~ 5 times lower. For N_e ~ 10^2--10^4 cm^{-3}, the 1909 line and the 1907 line have comparable strengths. For the bright core, 4*1200 sec exposures will yield a S/N ~ 5 per resolution element for each component of the doublet, or a S/N ~ 15 after binning along the slit to 0.2"/pix, matching the sampling step of the optical data. For the fainter tail, 4*1200 sec exposures will yield a S/N ~ 3.6 per resolution element after binning along the slit. [Abell 30 & NGC 6153, G430M 3537--3823]: This will cover the nebular continuum Balmer discontinuity at 3646 Angstrom, the high-n Balmer line decrement H 10 3798 to H 24 3671 and [O II] 3726, 3729. The 0.2" slit width yields a spectral resolution of 1.1 Angstrom FWHM, sufficient to resolve the [O II] doublet. For Abell 30 Knot J 3, 4*1200 sec exposures will yield S/N ratios ~ 22 and ~ 6.6 for each component of the [O II] doublet in the core and tail, respectively. In NGC 6153, [O II] 3729 is ~2 times weaker than 3726. S(3729) >~ 8*10^{-16} cgs/(square)" for nebular radius R <~ 12" (Liu et al. 1999b). Six 1200 sec exposures will yield a S/N >~ 5 for 3729 per resolution element. [Abell 30 & NGC 6153, G430M 4051--4337]: This will cover C II 4267 and H-delta. In the light of He I 5876, Knot J 3 of Abell 30 has a compact 0.2"*0.3" core and a tail of nearly 2". Using S(5876) given by Borkowski et al. (1995) and the observed 5876 to 4267 flux ratio (Jacoby & Ford 1983), we estimate that for the bright core, S(4267) ~ 4*10^{-15} cgs/(square)". Three 1200 sec exposures will yield S/N ratios of ~ 19 and 5.7 in the core and tail, respectively. For NGC 6153, C II 4267 has a peak S(4267) ~ 9*10^{-16} cgs/(square)" at R ~ 6.5" and S(4267) >~ 5*10^{-16} cgs/(square)" for R <~ 10" (Liu et al. 1999b). Four 1200 sec exposures will yield S/N >~ 5.2 for R <~ 10". [Abell 30 & NGC 6153, G430M 4308--4594]: This will cover H-gamma, He I 4471 and [O III] 4363. For knot J 3 of Abell 30, 4363 is brighter than C II 4267 and 2*1200 sec exposures will yield S/N ~ 18 and 5.7 for 4363 in the core and tail, respectively. For NGC 6153, 4363, which is fainter than 4471, has S(4363) >~ 8*10^{-16} cgs/(square)" for R < 10". Two 1200 sec exposures will yield a S/N >~ 5 for R < 10". [Abell 30 & NGC 6153, G430M 4563--4849]: This will cover O II 4649.13, C III 4647.42, He II 4686 and [Ar IV] 4711, 4740. C III 4647 in Abell 30's knots has a strength comparable to that of C II 4267 (Jacoby & Ford 1983; Guerreor & Manchado 1996). No O II ORLs have ever been measured from Abell 30. If we assume that Abell 30's knots have a C/O abundance ratio ~ 1, compared to C/O = 0.56 for NGC 6153 (Liu et al. 1999b), then O II 4649 is expected to have a strength half that of C II 4267. Thus 6*1200 sec exposures will yield S/N ratios of ~ 16 and 4.2 per resolution element for O II 4649 in the core and in the tail, respectively. For NGC 6153, O II 4649 has a peak S(4649) ~ 7*10^{-16} cgs/(square)" and S(4649) >~ 4*10^{-16} cgs/(square)" for R < 10". Six 1200 sec exposures will yield a S/N ~ 4.2 for R < 10". [Abell 30 & NGC 6153, G430M 4818- -5104]: This will cover H-beta and [O III] 4959, 5007. For Abell 30, H-beta is ~3 times fainter than C II 4267, too faint to be mapped in a reasonable time. We will thus concentrate on the [O III] lines and aim to measure the much stronger H-alpha line using the G750M grating. The [O III] 4959 line is 17 times brighter than C II 4267. Two 300 sec exposures will yield S/N ratios of 44 and 18, respectively, in the core and tail of Knot J 3. For NGC 6153, S(H- beta) >~ 3* 10^{-14} cgs/(square)" for R < 10". Two 300 sec exposures will yield a S/N >~ 27 for R < 10". [Abell 30 & NGC 6153, G750M 5448--6020]: This will cover [N II] 5754, [Cl III] 5517, 5537 and He I 5876 at a spectral resolution of 2.2 Angstrom FWHM. The core of Knot J 3 of Abell 30 has S(5876) ~ 1.4*10^{-14} cgs/(square)". Two 300 sec exposures will yield S/N ratios of ~ 21 and 7.6 in the core and tail, respectively. For NGC 6153, 2*300 sec exposures will yield a S/N >~ 16 for 5876 for R <~ 10". [Abell 30 & NGC 6153, G750M 6295- -6867]: This will cover H-alpha, [N II] 6548, 6584, [S II] 6716, 6731 and He I 6678. For Abell 30 Knot J 3, H-alpha is ~ 3 times fainter than He I 5876. Two 1200 sec exposures will yield S/N ~ 23 and 8 for H-alpha in the core and tail, respectively. For NGC 6153, 2*600 sec exposures will yield S/N >~ 7 for the [S II] lines, the faintest among those listed above. [NGC 6153 only, WFPC2 imaging]: We will use WFPC2 instead of STIS to obtain images of NGC 6153 in [O III] 5007 (filter F502N) and H-alpha (filter F656N) since STIS does not have a H-alpha filter and the STIS [O III] filter has a red leak. A comparison of the [O III] and H-alpha images will diagnose the location of H-deficient knots within the nebula. NGC 6153 has a peak S(5007) ~ 5*10^{-13} cgs/(square)" at R ~ 6.5" along PA=122.8D, which drops to ~ 4*10^{-14} cgs/(square)" at R ~ 15". Two 600 sec exposures will yield S/N ratios of 27 and 5.8 at R ~ 6.5" and 15", respectively. Similarly, 2*600 sec exposures will yield a S/N >~ 9.2 for H- alpha per PC pixel for R <~ 15". In total, including overheads, 11 orbits each are required to complete the proposed observations for Abell 30 and NGC 6153. These can be fit into three visits for each target. Real Time Justification ----------------------- For the STIS visits, we used ORIENT in order to diagnose the desired slit alignment. With the current RPS2, we find that Abell 30 fits in a Nov 2000 -- 30 Apr 2001, Nov 2001 -- 30 Apr 2002 scheduling windows and NGC 6153 in a May 26 -- Jun 3, 2001 window.
