Abstract We propose a snapshot survey of narrow band OIIILambda5007Angstrom images for a well defined sample of 88 Seyfert galaxies (29 Seyfert 1s and 59 Seyfert 2s), 18 of which already have data in the archive, selected from a mostly isotropic property, the 60Mum flux. These data will be used: 1) to determine the origin of the misalignment between the accretion disk axis and the host galaxy plane axis, which can be due to mergers with other galaxies, or by the self induced radiation warping; 2) to compare the size and shape of the NLR of Seyfert 1s and Seyfert 2s, and to study the frequency of conically shaped Narrow Line Regions (NLR) in Seyfert galaxies, which are usually unresolved from ground-based observations; 3) estimate the importance of shocks to the ionization of the NLR. We aim to provide a critical test of the applicability and limitations of the Unified Schemes that currently are the framework for understanding Seyfert galaxies and their luminous counterparts. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8598( 3) - 03/28/00 10:55 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Many Unified Models for various subsets of AGN have been discussed over the years, and there is now a consensus that certain of these are correct to zeroth order, i.e. that they apply qualitatively to at least some large fraction of the objects in the subclass treated. We believe that historically the main stumbling block in testing and developing the Unified Model has been the tendency to compare samples of AGN being unified which were not preselected by some isotropic property. In the case of Seyferts the effect is spectacular: according to the model, we see perhaps 1 percent optical continuum by reflection in Sy 2s, whereas we see the whole thing in Sy 1s. Many famous Seyferts were selected by UV excess, and thus by this hypothesis the 2s were selected from two orders of magnitude higher on the luminosity function than the 1s. This is the main reason the 2s have much more CO, far-IR, radio luminosity, etc than the 1s, yet these discrepancies have all been cited in the literature as falsifying the Unified Model for Seyferts. One of the best samples for our purposes is that of de Grijp et al. (1987), selected by IRAS 60Mum flux plus warm IRAS colors in the 25Mum-60Mum range. This selects Seyferts efficiently and with little orientation biases. According to the Pier & Krolik (1992) dusty torus models, which are the most anisotropic and consequently the most conservative, the torus emits nearly isotropically at 60Mum, making this sample one of the least biased with respect to orientation and ideal to address problems related to the Unified Model of Seyferts. The initial sample from de Grijp et al. (1987) was observed spectroscopically (de Grijp et al. 1992) to confirm their activity as Seyferts and not a lower activity class like LINER or Starburst. From this sample we selected all Seyferts with velocity V<9000 km s-1, which gives a total of 88 galaxies, 29 Seyfert 1s and 59 Seyfert 2s. In Figure 2 we compare the 60Mum luminosity of Seyfert 1s and Seyfert 2s, which shows that the two samples have similar distributions. We chose to observe the line OIIILambda5007Angstrom, because it is the strongest emission line in Seyferts, and is not severely contaminated by HII region emission, as in the case of HAlpha. With this database we will overcome the worst deficiencies of previous HST observations of the NLR of Seyferts, which were mostly biased towards objects already known to have extended NLRs, as well as being deficient in observations of Sy 1s. Of the 88 galaxies in our sample, 18 have OIII images in the archive, reducing the size of our proposed sample to 70 objects. The distance limit (V<9000 km s-1) corresponds to a spatial resolution of <100pc in the WFC (assuming Ho=75 km s-1 Mpc-1), which is the limit for the study we propose. Each galaxy will be imaged through two filters, one including the redshifted OIIILambda5007Angstrom line and the other one corresponding to its adjacent continuum. Considering the recessional velocity of the galaxies in our sample (1000 km s-1-45D, a total of 74, were observed from VLA with the A- array in X-band. 50 percent of the sample showed extended emission. This configurations gives a resolution of 0.2 arcsec, which is ideal to compare with the HST emission line images. Also, in order to ensure a homogeneous determination of the host galaxy inclination and major axis position angles, we obtained ground-based B and I images.
