Abstract We propose to extend our V and I snapshot survey of nearby dwarf elliptical (dE) galaxies to include a sample of 30 bright dE (M_V < - 15.7) with significant globular cluster (GC) populations. This survey will provide important information on the globular cluster systems of such galaxies and the properties of their cores and nuclei. The high resolution of HST allows us to identify globular cluster candidates and classify more accurately a galaxy as nucleated or non-nucleated. Our results from the Cycle 6 survey show that dE have globular cluster specific frequencies (S_N) similar to those of giant ellipticals. Nucleated dE have higher S_N than non- nucleated dE, and show a trend of increasing S_N with fainter luminosities. We have also studied the spatial distribution of the globular clusters and an interesting (lack of a) trend is emerging. The globular cluster surface densities follow the luminosity profiles of the underlying galaxies, on average, and there is no segregation by luminosity. This is an interesting result, if confirmed, because the dynamical friction timescales for dE galaxies are significantly shorter than a Hubble time. With better statistics, analysis of the cluster spatial distribution can place constraints on the ages of the clusters and the dark matter, and offer tests of the universality and evolution of the globular cluster luminosity function. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8600( 2) - 03/02/00 10:55 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We propose to augment our current Cycle 6 and Cycle 7 snapshot survey of dE galaxies with 30 galaxies brighter than M_V = -15.7. Our optimum exposure time sequence for each visit is two exposures of 230 sec each in F555W and one exposure of 300 sec in F814W. The total time per target will be 30 minutes including guide-star acquistion and instrument overheads. Fine lock is required for guiding. All targets will be centered on WF3 so that the imaged area of each galaxy and the signal-to-noise are maximized. For a distance modulus of 31.2 (corresponding to the Virgo and Fornax clusters), the planned exposure times will reach S/N = 10 and 20 at the peak of the globular cluster luminosity function (M_V = -7 ) in F814W and F555W, respectively. The major sources of background in order of importance are (1) cosmic rays, (2) background galaxies, and (3) the dE galaxy itself. With three short exposures, even in different bands, we obtain virtually no contamination from cosmic rays. Background galaxies are a much more important source of false detections. Typical effective radii of the dE in the sample are 15". At V=25, there are roughly 7* 10^4 galaxies per square degree. Thus, within 15", we expect 4 background galaxies. At this magnitude faint galaxies are still in general well resolved by HST, with median half-light radii of 0.15 arcsec (Griffiths et al. 1994). In contrast, globular clusters at the Virgo Cluster distance are barely resolved, with r_e ~ 0.04" (Whitmore et al. 1995). Thus most background galaxies can be identified by morphology, as has proved to be the case with existing data. Colors will provide additional discrimination, but the median colors of galaxies at I ~ 25 is similar to that of globular clusters, so this must be used with care. Statistical corrections can be made to the measured values of S_N, N_c, and the radial distribution of globular clusters based on the number of globular-cluster like objects seen in archival blank-field observations. These corrections dominate the uncertainties for galaxies fainter than M_B = - 15 if is less than one. The background contamination will not be a major source of error for our cycle-9 sample as the galaxies we have chosen are brighter than M_B = -15.7 and will typically have S_N > 3. The smooth background of the dE galaxy itself increases the exposure time to detect an unresolved source. For galaxies at the bright end of our sample (M_V = -17), central surface brightnesses are still sufficiently faint (> 22 mag, arcsec^-2) that this background does not significantly increase the noise, except possibly in the central few tenths of an arcsecond. The expected globular cluster populations are high enough at M_B = -17 that this small loss of search area will not significantly affect the determination of S_N.
