Abstract During the past few years, the Lick Observatory Supernova Search (LOSS) and the Beijing Astronomical Observatory Supernova Search (BAOSS) have found a total of 76 supernovae (SNe), 62 of them in relatively nearby galaxies (cz <= 6000 km s^-1). Most of the nearby objects were discovered before maximum brightness. All have follow-up photometry and spectroscopy; they include some of the best-studied SNe to date. We propose to conduct a WFPC2 snapshot survey in V and I of the sites of the nearby SNe, which have precisely known positions, to obtain high-resolution information on their local environment. For example, we will see whether SNe of a given kind tend to occur close to star clusters, or in dusty regions, or in old (red) stellar populations. This will give important clues to the nature of their progenitor stars, with ramifications for many areas of astronomy (e.g., stellar evolution, nucleosynthesis, cosmology). For some of the most recent or unusually long-lived SNe, the new HST data will provide late-time photometry that is superior to what we can obtain from the ground. This proposal is similar, but complementary to, our archival proposal in which existing HST images from other programs are used to glean information about the environments of SNe. To make the data readily available to other researchers studying these SNe, we waive the entire proprietary period. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8602( 7) - 04/06/01 14:36 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We wish to obtain snapshot images of the sites of nearby, recent SNe discovered by LOSS and BAOSS. The use of standard wide bands will permit direct comparisons with other HST observations. To achieve high spatial resolution the PC is requested. Given the constraints of snapshot observations (less than 1 orbit per target), the desire to go fairly deep, and the great advantage of having some color information, the use of two filters was deemed optimal. U- band observations would be very time consuming, and even B-band images would not leave enough time for another filter. Of the remaining choices, V and I is the best combination: the WFPC2 is quite sensitive in these bands, we don't have to worry much about emission-line contamination, and there is good discrimination between different spectral types. Indeed, Figure 4 below, taken from Van Dyk et al. (1999a), shows that our most useful information for the site of SN 1979C came from V-band (F555W) and I-band (F814W) images, even when we included U-band (F336W), B-band (F439W), and R-band (F675W) data. In our study of the site of SN 1979C, we found that with a 800-s F555W (V) exposure (Fig. 5), we were able to measure mag 24.5 stars to +/- 0.1 mag, whereas with a 1200-s F814W (I) exposure, we were able to measure mag 24.0 stars to +/- 0.1 mag (Van Dyk et al. 1999a). This is consistent with what we derive from eq. 6.1 in the WFPC2 Handbook. Here, we will scale back the exposure times to 600 s (F555W) and 900 s (F814W), so the uncertainty will be slightly higher for such faint stars. Stars in galaxies somewhat closer than 16 Mpc, the distance to SN 1979C, will still be measured equally well. The overall background colors, dust lanes, and prominent features will be visible even in galaxies with cz ~ 6000 km s^-1. Our imaging observations fit well within the typical visibility of ~ 52 minutes, as shown below. For only two of these (SNe 1999bx, 1999by) will both F555W and F814W images be available in the HST archive during Cycle 9. Twelve others will have archival data, but in bands that differ from F555W and F814W, and sometimes only with short exposures; we retain these SNe in our Snapshot list to get a uniform dataset, but we will also analyze whichever archival images are useful (hopefully as part of our companion archival proposal). Based on the current discovery rate, we expect that by the Cycle 9 Phase II deadline the total number of eligible SNe will be at least 70. Thus, we request 70 visits, with V and I exposures totalling 42 minutes (including guide-star acquisition and all overheads) per visit. If the TAC feels uncomfortable allocating up to 70 visits (given that only 62 SNe meeting the selection criteria are known at the present time), approval of up to 62 visits would be acceptable. Actually, getting snapshots of even 10 SNe (given the various constraints of HST) would be considered a success.
