Abstract Extreme helium stars (EHEs) are luminous stellar remnants evolving rapidly to become white dwarfs. They represent an important stage in the evolution of at least some low-mass stars, and are closely related to the R Coronae Borealis variables. Models do not agree about their origin, nor about what fraction of normal stars pass through this phase, in which the stars have been completely stripped of their outer layers. The models do predict that EHEs are contracting and provide rate predictions and evolutionary lifetimes. First and second epoch IUE observations have shown that these contraction rates can be measured. We propose HST/STIS observations of 15 EHEs which, together with IUE data, will give a 20-year baseline of ultraviolet spectrophotometry. These observations will provide effective temperatures and angular radii with an internal accuracy for individual stars of ~1% precision which cannot be achieved from optical or other diagnostics. From these measurements we will measure precise contraction rates for a larger sample of targets and obtain direct tests of the evolution models. Building on the IUE archive, the higher quality of HST data will provide a foundation dataset for establishing fundamental quantities (e.g. extinction) and for studying evolutionary changes in EHEs into the next century and beyond. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8603( 5) - 03/03/01 11:58 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ For ten of the fifteen stars both NUV and FUV exposures are requested. NUV measurements will be made with either G230LB or G230L and FUV measurements with either G140L or E140M. The E140M and G230LB will be used where the star's brightness would exceed MAMA bright object count rate limits. The remaining five stars on our list would require too much time to observe in the FUV, and we only request that they be observed at the NUV G230L MAMA setting. Exposure time estimates were made using the STIS Exposure Time Calculator. IUE flux calibrated spectra were supplied for the spectral distributions. Times were estimated to provide a S/N ratio of 50 at 2600 Angstrom and a S/N ratio of 50 at 1300 Angstrom. For the E140M spectra, the times thus obtained were divided by 39 because the data will be binned to give a spectral resolution similar to that of the G140L spectra, which is about 39 times lower. For LSS 5121 and BD+1 4381 lower FUV S/N ratios (10 to 20) were accepted to keep exposure times reasonable. Where the calculated exposure times are very short we have increased the exposures to 2 minutes. The lower S/N spectra would be acceptable, but, for example in a 22 minute visit it makes no sense not to double the S/N by asking for a 2 minute exposure instead of a 30 second exposure.
