Abstract The Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) is an extraordinary galaxy. It is the nearest example of a low metallicity, star-forming dwarf irregular, contains a wide range of stellar ages, and is distorted by interactions with the Milky Way and its close companion, the Large Magellanic Cloud. We propose to investigate the structure and evolutionary history of the SMC by obtaining a series of 50 three-color SNAPshots with WFPC2 of selected SMC regions. With this polling of SMC field star properties, we will produce color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) in the U, V and I bands which will reach V~23.5 in regions too crowded to be observed accurately from the ground. We will use these data for investigations of two major topics: (1) the star formation history of the SMC, by quantitative matching between models and data using a sophisticated numerical approach which properly accounts for errors and other uncertainties. (2) the structure of the SMC along our line of sight. The galaxy is thought to be considerably distended in this direction and we will put constraints on this from the width of the observed lower main sequence. In addition, by obtaining accurate photometry for about 100, 000 stars in each region, our CMDs will provide an excellent basis for comparisons with evolutionary tracks of low metal stars in the few solar masses range. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8604( 2) - 09/01/00 15:07 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ In order to adequately sample the spectral energy distribution of stars of all spectral types, we propose to observe in three filters for each SNAPshot pointing: F300W (240 sec), F606W (180 sec) and F814W (300 sec). From the data we extracted from the archive (shown in Figure reffig:cmd; see also Figure reffig:errs for the observed errors as a function of magnitude) and the WFPC2 Exposure Time Calculator, we estimate to reach a signal to noise ratio greater than 10 for stars earlier than A0 (V~eq19.5) in the F300W filter and earlier the G5 (V~eq23.5) both in the F606W and F814W. This choice of filters maximizes the observational efficiency by choosing the wide-band version of the classical Johnson system and, at the same time, adequately samples the spectral energy distribution of the stars. In particular, the observations in the F300W filter, in combination with the other two, will provide a handle on the temperature and reddening of stars earlier than A0V, for which the F606W- F814W color is degenerate. While it would be obviously desirable to reach fainter magnitudes also in the F300W, this would require of the order of 1.8 hours: an exceedingly long time, indeed. On the other hand, reaching V~eq23.5 with good signal to noise in the F606W and F814W filters will allow us to constrain the SFH of the observed regions all the way back to times comparable to the Hubble time. In order to save 2 minutes of overhead time for each filter, we do not plan to CR- split the observations. Even in the longest exposure (5 minutes in the F814W filter) we expect only 1.2\ by cosmic ray hits. Moreover, by looking at the CMD (Figure reffig:cmd, right panel) we can see that although there is a noisy scatter due to poor cosmic ray identifications, this is not excessive, and will be cleaned up with more sophisticated cosmic-ray identification algorithm between identical images in different filters. However, to ensure that we maximize the accuracy of our photometry, we do need guided exposures. To summarize, the three images (one in each filter) described above require 12 minutes of exposure. Adding the overheads (9 minutes for guide star acquisition and 3 minutes instrumental overhead per exposure) leads to a total SNAPshot time requirement of 30 minutes. We plan to observe 10 fields in each of 5 different regions across the central region of the SMC (those that are difficult to observe from the ground because of crowding problems). We have chosen 3 regions which are similarly crowded to the archive image (Figure reffig:cmd), one which is more crowded (along the bar), and one slightly less crowded (the outer wing). This will give a good feeling for the global variations of stellar populations and the structure across the SMC. It will also allow us to obtain sufficient stars in all the regions of the CMD and, hence, to constrain the SFH with statisitical accuracy over a large fraction of the lifetime of the galaxy. Because the data reduction (photometry) and modeling for this project will involve a large investment of time, we would prefer to retain at least part of the usual proprietary period to avoid duplication of the initial effort. The purpose of our SNAPshot program is to cover a significant fraction of the SMC. In order for this to be feasible with a reasonable amount of exposure time, our survey has necessarily to be quite shallow and restricted to only 3 broad band filters. As a consequence, we plan to complement these observations by adding more HST observations in regions of particular interest, selected on the basis of the analysis of the datasets we propose here. More broad-band filters will provide the additional information needed to carefully measure the reddening towards the stars (Romaniello, 1998), thus reducing the uncertainties in the interpretation of the data. In addition, HAlpha (F6565N) is of invaluable help in identifying low mass Pre-Main Sequence stars (Romaniello et al., 1999) and it can be used to study the distribution of the interstellar ionized gas and to place the stars in the broader context of the environment in which they are observed. Again, the superb angular resolution of HST would be absolutely needed. Also, we are planning to make supporting observations with ESO telescopes to obtain accurate calibrations in the fields of interest. These observations will also fill in the brighter stars in our CMDs that will be saturated in the HST images. So we will be able to study the more massive stellar populations in our fields and pinpoint the star formation history right up to the present and thus obtain a complete picture of the SFH of the field stars in the galaxy. Our proposed SNAPshot program would also lead the way for spectroscopic follow-ups. For example, we are planning to obtain spectroscopy of the Ca infrared triplet lines in red giant stars in these fields with the ESO 3.6m telescope. This will allow us to directly measure the metallicity distribution in the SMC, and allow us to overcome the degeneracy of age and metallicity in the CMD.
