Abstract Knowledge of the local space density of AGNs is of fundamental importance to a number of astrophysical problems. A significant fraction of nearby galaxies have nuclei whose spectra are intermediate between those of LINERs and nuclear starbursts. These ``transition objects'' may be composite systems that contain both a central AGN and circumnuclear star formation. We will test this hypothesis by using STIS to obtain spatially-resolved optical spectra of a well-defined sample of 15 nearby (<= 17 Mpc) transition nuclei selected from the extensive ground-based survey of Ho, Filippenko, and Sargent. The physical origin of these objects affects the census of AGNs in nearby galaxies, the nature of nuclear star formation, and the possible connection between starburst and AGN activity. We will use the G430L and G750M gratings to cover the most important diagnostic emission lines in order to search for line-ratio variations across the nuclear region. If the two-component model for transition nuclei is correct, we expect the spectra to change from H II region-like to AGN- like as the center of the galaxy is approached. We will also use the high-resolution spectra to search for weak broad H-alpha emission, the classical signature of AGN activity, at a level of sensitivity far greater than is possible from the ground. Finally, the spectra will provide a rich source of nebular diagnostics to systematically study the physical properties of nuclear H II regions. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8607( 2) - 09/25/01 11:25 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ To accomplish our science goals, we require a two-orbit visit for each galaxy. We will use the 52X0.2 slit, and to facilitate scheduling, we do not preselect the slit position angle because our analysis does not depend on any particular slit orientation. Since our primary goal is to obtain an AGN census of transition objects, the main objective is to take a high-quality, high- resolution spectrum of the nucleus in order to see if it is an AGN. The off- nuclear spectra will be of considerable value to address a number of other scientific issues, as detailed in Section 3 of Scientific Justification, but these are secondary in importance. Three of our targets (NGC 2685, 5879, and 6503) can be observed in the CVZ. A large fraction of our sample (12/15) have archival WFPC or WFPC2 images. Inspection of these images shows that the vast majority of the objects contain a well-defined, unobscured, compact core (see Fig. 3 for a few examples), which gives us confidence that we will be able to successfully peak up on the nucleus. The CCD will be binned by 2 pixels in the spatial direction (0.1" sampling of a 0.2"-wide slit) in order to reduce the read noise. Following the initial acquisition (CCD+F28x50LP), the first orbit consists of: (1) guide-star acquisition (6 min), (2) peak-up on the nucleus (6 min) and exposure preparation (5 min), and (3) science exposure with G430L (2X14 min). Change grating to G430L during Earth occulation. The second orbit consists of: (1) guide-star re-acquisition (5 min), and (2) science exposure with G750M (3X14 min). The low-resolution setup will have a total exposure time of 28 minutes, which, for a typical V-band central surface brightness of 15.5 mag per square arcsec (measured from the archival images) and 0.1" sampling along the slit, results in S/N of 17 per pixel for the continuum. The same calculation for Mu(V) = 17 mag per square arcsec and 0.2" sampling gives S/N ~ 9 per pixel; these values are applicable to the inner few tenths of an arcsecond. This range of S/N for the continuum is sufficient to reliably measure the equivalent widths of stellar absorption features. The peak S/N for the emission lines will be higher than these estimates. It is difficult to predict accurately the S/N expected for the emission lines in the G750M spectrum because we have no advance knowledge of the spatial distribution of the line emission. We have taken the following approach. In our sample, the strongest emission line, usually H-alpha or [N II], typically has a peak flux of ~ 5X10^-15 erg/s/cm2/Ang within the 2"X4" aperture of the Palomar Survey. If, for instance, 1/5 of this flux comes from the inner 0.5"X0.5", the surface brightness of the line emission is 6 times higher in the inner 0.5". A total exposure time of 36 minutes yields a S/N of 25 per 0.1"X0.2" spatial aperture and per spectral resolution element. We know from actual experience with similar Cycle 7 data (GO-7631, ``The Nature of `Nuclear Activity' in Nearby Galaxies;'' PI: Rix) that these estimates are realistic.
