Abstract What are the factors that determine whether a galaxy is host to a luminous QSO? Recent evidence indicates that host galaxy spheroid mass is a key factor: we want to test the relationship between host galaxy and QSO luminosity at the highest feasible QSO luminosities by measuring the luminosities and profiles of host galaxies for QSOs with -25.8 > M_V > -27.6. Current data in this area are conflicting, and we aim to make a definitive experiment that takes careful account of problems caused by extended line or continuum emission around QSOs, relativistic beaming, gravitational lensing and galaxy interactions. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8609( 2) - 03/03/00 13:30 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We intend to use the same observing strategy that has already proved successful in our Cycle 6 and 7 programs (6776 & 7447). The F791W filter on WFPC2 will sample the rest-frame R-band continuum from the galaxies in our sample, simultaneously avoiding [OIII] and H_alpha emission lines and remaining safely longwards of the 4000 Angstrom break. The 2-D modelling software developed to analyse our Cycle 6 & 7 images is also eminently suitable for the proposed study. Simulations performed with this software allow us to predict with confidence that the host galaxy luminosities can be recovered even from beneath the PSF of the brightest QSOs in our sample, assuming the null hypothesis that the galaxies are as luminous as the hosts of the less powerful QSOs already observed. Exposure times: In order to calculate required exposure times we have constructed synthetic QSO/galaxy combinations using the average galaxy parameters found in our low-redshift study and QSOs of up to M_V = -27.5, representing the range expected for our sample. Appropriately K-corrected to a redshift of 0.45 (at the upper limit of our proposed redshift range), we obtain the following results: For a QSO of M_V ~ -26 we expect the light from a typical massive elliptical galaxy to dominate the combined profile at radii >= 2". 6*600 second exposures on the WF chip will enable us to follow the galaxy profile out to a distance of 7 arcsec. Galaxy luminosities, axial ratios, and QSO luminosities could all be reclaimed from the model with errors of < 5%. A good approximation to the galaxy scalelength was also obtained. For the most luminous QSOs in our sample the accuracies were correspondingly lower but it will still be possible to measure the host luminosities for even the brightest objects. If the host of 1821+643 is as bright as claimed by MRS we will be able to obtain accurate parameterisation of it for the lensing test. An additional short exposure of a few seconds duration will enable us to accurately measure the peak of the central QSO PSF (this information will be essential for subsequent 2-D modelling of the images). Thus we will require two orbits per object, including all overheads. PSF determination: Past experience has demonstrated the importance of obtaining an empirical PSF for the purposes of modelling the QSO/host combination. As in programs 6776 & 7447 we will require an orbit in which to obtain both unsaturated and very deep images of a star using the same filter, and positioned on the same part of the detector, as our target QSOs. The star which we have selected has colours similar to those of a typical QSO over the wavelength interval of interest.
