Abstract Two stars have multi-wavelength atlases at resolutions (R>= 100, 000) high enough to resolve dynamically interesting line structure: the Sun (G2 V) and Arcturus (K2 III). These canonical atlases provide an astrophysical test bench for studying the effects of temperature, gravity, and metalicity in cool stars. We have produced high resolution spectral atlases of the Sun from 22 Mum through the visible, as well as a high resolution spectral atlas of Arcturus from 5 Mum through 0.9 Mum. These atlases are widely used for line identification, calibrating atomic data, testing model atmospheres, studying stellar granulation, etc. We are currently finishing a major new digital atlas of the Sun and Arcturus from 3600--9000 Angstrom\ at R=150, 000 (to be published next year as an ASP monograph). We propose to extend the spectral coverage of these atlases down to 2124 Angstrom, using existing STIS spectra of Alpha Cen A (as a solar proxy) and new STIS observations of Arcturus. The NUV spectrum is astrophysically important because it encompasses the transition from the photosphere through the temperature minimum into the chromosphere. Modeling the spectroscopic transition from absorption to emission lines will provide important semi-empirical constraints on the poorly understood nonradiative heating processes that give rise to chromospheres in evolved stars. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8614( 4) - 08/06/02 09:48 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will obtain E230H spectra in four primary wavelength settings, covering 2124--3012 Angstrom\ at a resolution of 114, 000. We will achieve a mean S/N of 150 per resolution element from 2700--3150 Angstrom, decreasing to 40 by 2124 Angstrom. To accurately estimate required exposure times, we constructed a template spectrum of Arcturus from archival IUE, GHRS, and STIS data. The template (Figure 3) has 1 Angstrom\ flux bins, except for two R=100, 000 segments where the local count rate is expected to peak: ionMg2 h and k (observed by STIS) and 3122--3138 Angstrom\ (GHRS). Two small gaps were filled by logarithmic interpolation/extrapolation. Results from the STIS Exposure Time Calculator (ETC) are give in Table 1 below. The global count rate is too high in the 3012 Angstrom\ setting with the standard 0.2x0.09 aperture, so we will use the supported 0.1x0.03 aperture. We propose a 2-visit program to do all of the exposures. Visit 1: 2263 Angstrom\ exposures: 1820S + 2895S + 2895S + 1000S = 8600S total, 2513 Angstrom exposures: 1500S + 2895S. Visit 2: 2513 Angstrom\ (cont'd): 1820S = 6215S total, 2762 Angstrom\ exposures: 2570S + 2895S + 1200S= 6665S total, 3012 Angstrom\ exposures: 1200S + 2895S= 4095S total. There are 5 orbits in each visit for 10 orbits total. The continuum S/N at 2124 Angstrom\ will be 20 per resolution element.
