Abstract The very massive, unstable, persistently enigmatic star Eta Carinae has implications for several branches of astrophysics. While HST has produced a series of remarkable discoveries concerning this object, the nature of the central star remains elusive. Now, however, recent developments offer, for the first time, an approach that can settle certain long-standing questions which have been obstacles to understanding this unique object. A 5.5-year spectroscopic and X-ray cycle has been confirmed. STIS now provides the most promising and very likely the only way to test whether Eta Car is a 5.5-yr binary system. If it is, STIS will also allow us to constrain the parameters, needed to assess the companion star's possible role in past outbursts and ejecta. If the data conflict with binary models, then the 5.5-yr effect is probably a thermal cycle which will give novel information about the star's structure. In addition to the periodicity, a large, almost unprecedented brightening, first noticed in HST data, has occurred since 1997 and merits followup observations. We sense a breakthrough in the periodicity and the brightening, if Eta Car can be observed repeatedly with STIS through the current 5.5-year period, 1998.0 ---2003.5. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8619( 7) - 10/19/01 13:32 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Observations are needed through the current 5.5-year period of Eta Car, which began about 1998.0 and will thus continue to about 2003.5. We already have some STIS data for 1998.0 and 1998.9, and good data for 1998.2 and 1999.1, and more is expected in early 2000. For our purposes we need observations at least once a year. Shorter intervals are highly desirable for the critical possible- orbital- velocity question, because velocities can reverse quickly in an eccentric orbit. (We did not clearly recognize some of the motivations and considerations of this program until we examined the 1998.9 and 1999.1 data.) HST's Cycle 9 is important because it's the middle of Eta Car's current period. We also request additional Cycle 10 coverage in this proposal, because a complete time-series through the 5.5-year period is essential. Fortunately there's no need for a constant interval between observations. We also request observations in Cycle 11, approaching the end of the period, although more intensive observations will be merited when Eta Car's next major ``event'' occurs in mid-2003. At least, we assume that HST Cycle 11 will occur about that time. STIS/CCD, 1700--10000 Angstrom with `M' gratings and 0.1"-wide slit: We know from experience how many orbits are required for a good set of observations of this target. Essentially, a single orbit (as in 1998.0 and 1998.9) gives a useful but very unsatisfying set of information, covering only about 4 narrow wavelength intervals. Eta Car has hundreds of useful spectral features across the entire CCD wavelength range; a wide sample of these is needed for modeling, and besides, the star's behavior is still sufficiently unfamiliar that critical effects can happen in almost any of the STIS grating- tilt wavelength samples. With 5 orbits (as in 1998.2) complete STIS/CCD coverage is possible, with full wavelength calibrations etc. Experience shows that diminishing returns set in sometime after the 3rd orbit; with 3 orbits, as in our Cycle 8 plan, we need to omit only a few grating tilts if we also omit wavelength calibrations for some of the others. (With 4 orbits, more complete wavelength calibrations are feasible; we have explored this problem in the existing data.) Therefore, we request 4 orbits for STIS/CCD in Cycle 9, with the following plan in mind. Three orbits give the main data near the middle of the 5.5-year period; then (or before), a separate one-orbit observation gives additional velocity information and a look at a few critical emission lines at a time that's only a few months different, rather than a full year; recall comments above. For Cycles 10 and 11 we request only 3 orbits for STIS/CCD. In light of Cycle 8 and Cycle 9 results, we can decide whether to make each a single 3-orbit observation or two separate observations with 2 and 1 orbits respectively. If an unforeseen development motivates additional orbits, we can propose them later; meanwhile, it is highly desirable to be assured of at least minimal coverage in the last half of the 5.5-year period. Integration times range from a fraction of a second in the red to a few minutes in the UV, except that a very short supplementary exposure is needed for HAlpha which is very intense. If ground-based observations indicate that the recent brightening has persisted into HST Cycle 9, then some of the shortest exposures will be reduced; but this doesn't allow a proportionate reduction of the number of orbits. (Besides, the star is equally likely to fade again.) Real Time Justification ----------------------- We are not able to ORIENT at the same angle as in 1998, 1999, 2000 due to CVZ and Orient phasing. This dictates reinstitution of WAVECALS as we cannot use the bright nebular emissions of Weigelt blobs B and D. Results from 1999 and 2000 have led to the detection of a peculiar filament replete with the emission of many heavy elements including Sr, Co, Fe, Ti, Ni, V. Visit 2 is designed to follow up on these observations with continuous coverage from 3000-10140A Calibration Justification ------------------------- Additional Comments ------------------- 07/31/2000: (TRG) Visit 1 is now ready for scheduling in March-April 2001. Note that ORIENT at same angle as earlier epochs is not possible in CVZ, so ORIENT opened up. As the ORIENT is different, we must now accept autowavecals.
