Abstract The isotopic ratio 11B/10B will be determined for diffuse interstellar material along lines of sight to o Persei, 40 Persei, Zeta Persei, and X Persei that pass close to the star- forming region IC 348. High-resolution spectra of the Li I 6707A line toward o and Zeta Per show remarkably different isotopic ratios for lithium. Particularly striking is the ratio 7Li/6Li ~ 3 for o Per while Zeta Per shows a quasi-solar (~ 10) ratio. The significance of the very low ratio for o Per is that it is essentially the value predicted for production by relativistic cosmic rays through spallation reactions; it is the only interstellar or stellar measurement that approaches this theoretical value. This discovery provides a novel opportunity to measure the isotopic B ratio of gas with a Li concentration dominated by spallation induced by relativistic cosmic rays. Feasibility of isotopic measurements has been demonstrated by our GHRS observations of the interstellar B II 1362A resonance line that provided the first extra-solar measurement of 11B/10B. Comparison of the observed and predicted isotopic B (and Li) ratios will test the relative importance of B synthesis by cosmic rays and Type II supernovae, and test proposals that invoke high-fluxes of high-energy particles in star-forming regions as major players in light element synthesis. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8622( 3) - 03/03/00 14:49 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Maximum resolving power is highly desirable for these observations. This is provided by the 0.1X0.03 slit for X Per, but the MAMA brightness limits require us to use the 0.2X0.05ND slit which provides a thoroughly acceptable resolving power for the three brighter stars. Our aim is to achieve a S/N ratio of 150 or so. Encouraging words are provided by Kaiser (1998, PASP, 110, 978) who describes tests in the FUV that achieved this S/N without the use of a specific flat field because Doppler compensation in the echelle mode effectively smooths detector responsivity over approximately +/-8 pixels. Observed fluxes at 1360A were taken from IUE spectra and checked against OAO-2 spectra (Code & Meade 1979, ApJS, 39, 195; Meade & Code 1980, ApJS, 42, 283), when available: F(1360) = 1.1, 0.75, 1.8, and 0.067 in units of 10^-9 ergs cm^-2 s^-1 A^-1 for o Per, 40 Per, Zeta Per, and X Per, respectively. The ETC was used with S/N=150, E140H, and 0.02X0.05ND (but 0.1X0.03 for X Per) to estimate exposure times. Then for Phase II, we have constructed the visits to be between 1-3 orbits in length. HD23180 requires 11 orbits in 4 visits, HD22951-- 15 orbits in 5 visits, HD24398-- 6 orbits in 2 visits, and HD24534-- 5 orbits in 2 visits. The total is 37 (allocated) orbits in 13 visits that should be easily schedulable. Also, we are confident that 2 guide stars should be found per target (but we do worry about HST drift especially with regard to the 0.1X0.03 slit). The use of multiple orbits and multiple visits assures a more expanded sampling of the MAMA pixels and, hence, a better realization of a higher S/N during co-addition of individual exposures. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Calibration Justification ------------------------- Additional Comments ------------------- Our targets are bright stars (V between 2.9 and 6.1) which require artificial attenuation during both ACQ and ACCUM. We use either F25ND3 or F25ND5 for ACQ, expecting 12-18E3 electrons at maximum pixel. PEAKUP is required for our slit choices, and we use the CCD in dispersed mode with the G430M and the actual program apertures. Total electrons collected is between 4-25E5, i.e., above the minimum limit of 0.8E5. Notice that X Per goes through a double PEAKUP as required for observation with the 0.1X0.03 slit. X Per happens on occasion to dim by 0.5-0.7 magnitude in V, and we have transferred 2 orbits from 2 other targets to this object so as to assure an acceptable signal if there is another dimming during scheduled HST observations. In other words, if it dims we will lose 20% of S/N, and vice versa. There will be no problem with signal level for both ACQ and PEAKUP. Some of the time is used for centering X Per in the 0.1X0.03 slit, for which we have included a re-PEAKUP on the 3rd orbit of visit 12. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8622( 3) -
