Abstract Understanding the properties and evolution of dusty disks in the circumstellar environments of young stars is a key element in furthering our concepts of the formation mechanisms of extra-solar planetary systems. In the past year, the advent of NICMOS and STIS coronagraphy has given rise to the first reflected light imaging, other than for Beta Pic, of dusty circumstellar disks with spatially resolved morphological structures. NICMOS has taken a first step in imaging these new disks, elucidating their geometries, morphologies, and bulk photometric properties, while increasing the number of such known systems from one to half a dozen. These dusty disks vary in physical size by over two orders of magnitude and exhibit radial anisotropies in their brightness distributions which may be indicative of dynamical confinement or sculpting of the disk particles by unseen planetary bodies. STIS follow-on imaging and spectroscopy are needed to provide further insight into the nature of the disk particles. With spectra, we will measure the albedo of the disk dust and search for complex molecules and water ice. With coronagraphic images, we will investigate the scattering phase function and hence the composition of the disk dust as well as measure the disk sizes and shapes with high precision. Such observations are of fundamental importance in establishing the physical basis for emergent theories of disk evolution and planet-building. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8624( 11) - 06/26/02 06:45 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ 1) STIS Coronagraphic Imaging a) Target Acq -- integrate to acheive SNR>~50 b) WEDGEA1.0 Coronagraph (chosen based on the fact that the saturation bleed direction is parallel to the wedge and that more PSFs have been taken with WEDGEA) c) Integration times Choose maximum integration time so scatter from central star does not saturate at 1" (HD141569 and TW Hya) and 0.6" (HR4796A) (i.e. just outside the wedge). d) Orientations chosen to put major axis of disk between the wedge and the diffraction spikes 2) STIS Spectroscopy a) Orientation chosen to minimize scattered light in the slit for HR 4796A (TW Hya is face-one, so all parts of disk are equally good). 3) WFPC2 Imaging of HD 98800 -- dither for increased spatial resolution and bad-pixel rejections Real Time Justification ----------------------- NONE Calibration Justification ------------------------- 1) Due to the limited number of PSFs which have been taken using the coronagraphic wedge, we included time for PSF observations in our phase 1 proposal. The PSFs are all brighter than the science targets so they require less integration time although they are observed with the same scheme. 2) For all observations with G750L grating, we do required CCDFLATs Additional Comments ------------------- 1) HD 141569: The ORIENT constraints locate the major axis of the disk between the wedge and the diffraction spikes in both visits. Since we only spend one orbit on the PSF, we constrain the observations to be done sequentially, so the PSF is observed between the two orientations of the disk in order to make it close in time to both and minimize breathing or other time-dependent effects. 2) TW Hya: Since the disk is azimuthally symmetric and face-on, there are no specific ORIENT constraints. However, for bad pixel replacement and wedge/spike replacement, we use two orientations. To maximize scientific return, we do the 2nd orientation of the PSF and the spectroscopy of the PSF in the same orbit, so we constrain visits 6-8 to be sequential without gaps to minimize time dependent PSF variations. 3) HR 4796A: The tight ORIENT constraints put the ansae between the wedge and the diffraction spikes on both rolls. For spectroscopy, the ORIENT places the slit perpendicular to a radial vector from the star to reduce the amount of scattered light in the slit. Since the disk has a semi-major axis of only 1", the POS-TARG along the wedge moves the star to a wedge full-width position of 0."63 (the slope of the wedge is 0.05" of width for every 1" of motion). The observations of HR 4796 and its PSF (HR4748) can be fit into the same orbit warning that "Accumulated pointing change is 6100.6396 arcsec which is greater than the maximum of 3600 arcsec." We have alerted our Program Coordinator that this flag may have to be overridden manually for visits 11 and 12. 4) The pattern for HD98800 is set to yield 1/3 pixels sampling as advised by Tod Lauer. We use POS TARGs for the positioning. The strong ORIENT constraint is crucial to keep the diffration spikes at 45 degrees relative to the vector between the objects which are 0.8 arcsec appart oriented at 3 deg celestial position angle. ****MODIFICATIONS 05/10/2000 (1) (target 1) Fixed typo in RA of HD 141569A (14h -> 15h) (2) (visit 10) Added peak up prior to spectrum of HR4796A and also added spectrum of primary at G750L (now have spectra of primary with both gratings) -- had to change integration times on spectra of disk to compensate (3) (visit 9) Added peak up prior to spectrum of HR4748 (4) (visit 9) Added spectrum on star of HR 4748 for both gratings (5) (visit 7) Added spectrum on star of HD 85512 (PSF for TW Hya) -- to get this integration time, had to reduce number of coronagraphic images to 7 from 11 (6) (visit 3) Fixed typo -- changed WEDGEB1.0 to WEDGEA1.0 (7) (visits 1-3) Change sizeaxis2=316 for safety and to look for extended disk (8) (visits 11-12) Change centeraxis2=69 based on better pixel scale (0.0507"/pix) provided by Eliot since this is calculated as an offset from the wedgeA1.0 posn.
