Abstract Much of what we know about starburst (SB) galaxies, at low and high redshift, depends upon the nature of the SB dust extinction and the intrinsic physical parameters of OB stars versus metallicity. Typically SBs, unlike our Galaxy, exhibit extinction laws with no 2200Angstrom\ peak. There is little information on the effects of dense star-formation on dust extinction properties. Specifically, no UV- visual extinction studies exist for the dense star-forming regions of 30 Dor (LMC) and NGC 346 (SMC), which represent prime laboratories for studying these effects. These regions have the highest concentration of young O stars in these galaxies, where 30 Dor is the nearest example of a definite starburst. Using the 2-D capability of STIS, we will a.) perform the first UV-visual extinction study of the dense regions of 30 Dor (in and around R136) and NGC 346, b.) produce unreddened OB star flux distributions in 30 Dor and NGC 346, c.) use these results to derive effective temperature, luminosity, and mass-loss rate correlations with spectral type and metallicity, and d.) explore if the extinction for the cores of 30 Dor and NGC 346 can be used to generate ``true'' starburst extinction laws. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8629( 7) - 09/06/00 10:13 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will obtain 2-D spectroscopy of the dense star regions of 30 Dor and NGC 346. Selecting random orientations suggests we will observe approximately 100 OB (O3 to B0) stars around R136 and >= 140 stars in NGC 346. The observational plan is complicated, but definitely worth the rewards. These observations will be obtained using the 0.5" and the 2" wide apertures and slitless mode as described below. We request CVZ usage to dramatically increase the observing. We can accommodate any orientation. (The exposures listed on p.2 are merely placeholders. The exact coordinates will be specified in Phase 2.) Selecting the pointings is laborious. They must be chosen with great care to insure detector safety, maximize the number of OB stars, and guarantee that special objects are observed. We will do this, in close cooperation with STScI, once time is awarded and orientation determined. We request a total of 10 CVZ orbits (5 orbits for 30 Dor and 5 orbits for NGC 346). We will obtain STIS spectra with the G140L, G230LB, and the G430L (for NGC 346 only) gratings. The G140L exposures sample the prominent N V Lambda1240, Si IV Lambda1400, C IV Lambda1550 mass loss features and He II Lambda1640 emission. They also sample the strong photospheric absorption of Fe III, IV, and V in the UV (Smith Neubig & Bruhweiler 1997, 1999). The G230LB/CCD exposures will gauge extinction, especially near 2200Angstrom\ and sample the strong Fe III and Fe II absorption of B stars. The G430L exposures of NGC 346 (2900- 5700Angstrom) will provide visual colors and spectral types to compare UV types. The H-lines near the Balmer limit and the size of the Balmer jump are excellent discriminants of stellar gravity and effective temperature and are extremely important for model atmosphere comparisons. In our exposure calculations we use realistic values for extinction, E(B-V) =0.1 and 0.4 for 30 Dor and NGC 346, respectively (Walborn & Blades 1997; Massey et al. 1989). We also use the recent extinction curves of Gordon et al. and Gordon & Clayton for these regions. These curves indicate more extinction at G140L wavelengths than earlier results. STIS/G140L exposure times are based upon observed IUE fluxes near N V (4.5x10^-9 ergs/s/cm^2/Angstrom) of Upsilon Ori (B0 V; V=4.62 and E(B- V)=0.04) moved to the distance of the LMC (dist. mod = 18.3). A B0 V star has M_V =-4. The reduction in flux due to distance for the LMC is DeltaM=9.8. At 1250Angstrom\ the assumed LMC E(B-V) yields A_1250= 5.2 mag. These factors give 137 and 360 counts per 1000 second exposure at 1250Angstrom and 1500Angstrom, respectively, for 30 Dor (R136) using the 52"x2" aperture. The count rates are significantly better for brighter stars, the SMC, and as one moves to the G230L grating. In calculating exposure times we use the sensitivities quoted in the new STIS Instrument Handbook. We have checked our estimates using archival STIS exposures of stars in 30 Dor and NGC 346. We have also used the on-line exposure calculator for SMC and LMC stars. All are consistent. The SMC stars are not heavily reddened, which means we must avoid the brightest stars using the G140L/MAMA. These brightest stars have been observed with FOS and STIS in the higher resolution E140M mode. (Walborn et al. 1995 & Lennon-GO prog. 7437). underlineWe will observe the 30"x30" central region of 30 Dor around R136. Because of the large density of OB stars, we will use the 52"x0.5" (effectively 25"x0.5" for G140L) slit (~4 positions) near the core of R136 and the 2" slit (~6 position) at greater distances. G140L and G230L exposures will be 1000s. These data will be combined with existing HST visual spectra and WFPC2 photometry to accomplish our goals (see refs. in text). We will use offsets to assure accurate pointings. We allow 11 minutes to initially acquire and peakup on the offset plus 1 minute slew time for each offset. The ~4 0.5" slit exposures will be made of the central region of R136, while the remaining 2" slit exposures will bracket these on either side. The CCD exposures will be 2x360sec and will require an extra 1 minute overhead. We minimize grating changes, but use both grating settings before moving to the next pointing. We estimate 10 pointings in five CVZ orbits (96 minutes per CVZ orbit). Each pointing should yield usable data for >= 10 OB stars with M_V brighter than -4. underlineWe will observe all the stars in the central 75"x75" region of NGC 346 with the G230LB and G430L settings (6 pointings). Because the density of OB stars is much less than 30 Dor, we will acquire the G230LB and G430L exposures in slitless mode. This will not be possible for the G140L, because the brightest NGC 346 stars, due to low reddening, exceed the MAMA safety limits. We have taken time to examine slitless G430L calibration exposures acquired by the STScI of a region on the outskirts of NGC 346 (ID=8415). We are absolutely certain that our approach will yield excellent results. Each slitless CCD pointing will cover 50"x50". Our final choice of pointings will have significant overlap (~50\ to provide near-UV and optical spectral types plus derive extinction. The most important regions are wavelengths near 2200Angstrom\ (G230LB), and 3300-4900Angstrom\ (G430L). All CCD exposures are 2x300 sec. The positions of stars can be adjusted on the detector to make maximum use of the format to increase the useful spectral coverage. In addition to the 6 CCD pointings, we expect to obtain ~ 20 pointings with the G140L/MAMA. We must choose our effective 25"x2" slit positions for the G140L observations very carefully to avoid the brightest stars. The G140L observations (all 600 sec) will be performed consecutively. Each field sampled by the aperture will be a small subset of the FOV sampled by the CCD. We estimate 2-3 OB stars per G140L exposure. We estimate 18-20 G140L exposures in addition to the 6 CCD pointing in 5 CVZ orbits. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Our targets are in the SMC and LMC and are in the CVZ. Our 10 orbit request would effectively double if the CVZ were not used.
