Abstract We have obtained excellent, new ground-based blue optical and HAlpha spectra of a sample of very early-type stars in the Magellanic Clouds in order to measure their physical properties, and compare these to the extensive data that exists for higher metallicity Galactic stars. What we lack is knowledge of the stellar wind terminal velocities for our stars, necessary to constrain the stellar models. These can only be measured with STIS/FUV on HST. In addition, we will obtain higher spatial resolution data on the HAlpha line for six of our stars for which nebular contamination is significant even with long-slit subtraction in our ground- based data. These new HST data will allow us to understand how the spectral type to effective temperatures depend upon metallicity (necessary in determining IMFs), as well as allow us to explore the astrophysically interesting regime of stars of extreme temperatures, masses and luminosities. Together with the optical data, they will also provide important information about the strengths of stellar winds at extreme luminosities and the calibration of the Wind Momentum - Luminosity Relationship at lower metallicities. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8633( 4) - 06/21/00 10:19 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Our program can be executed very effectively in ``snapshot" mode, i.e., with typical 25 min total observation time (overhead + exposure). We will use STIS in the FUV with the G140L grating to observe all of our lines of interest in a single grating setting. The resolution, about 250 km/sec, is adequate for our purposes of obtaining terminal velocities for use with our ground-based optical data for computing effective temperature, surface gravities, and getting a crude abundance estimate; see for example, Prinja & Crowther (1998 MNRAS, 300, 828) and Haser et al.\ (1998, A&A, 330, 285) for measurement of terminal velocities at comparable dispersion. We begin with a guide star acquisition (6 min). We use the 0.2x0.2 arcsec slit for the STIS/FUV data so that there is no concern about other stars in the slit; with the STIS/CCD we use the 52x0.2 arcsec slit. For neither case is a peakup needed for the ACQ. (An examination of Fig. 13.86 in the STIS manual, and the associated table, demonstrates that we do not degrade the resolution any by using the 0.2 arcsec slit.) A ``typical" (median exposure) star in our sample has V=13.88 and E(B-V)=0.16; we will need 300 sec (5 min) to reach a S/N of 30 per spectral resolution element at Lambda 1550 (C IV line, and the worse S/N). Add another 8 minutes overhead for MAMA in spectroscopic mode, and the total time comes to 25 minutes. The guiding mode needs to be the usual FGS ``fine track" with two guide stars, given the slit size. For all but our faintest and most heavily reddened star, we achieve the goal of S/N of 30 within the 40 minute ``guideline" limit for snapshots; for example, LH90-T2\_22 (V=14.22, B-V=0.41) would require a 19 min exposure to reach a S/N of 30, thus requiring a total observation time of 39 minutes. Our faintest (in the UV) star is LH90-Br58, a very interesting O3If*/WN6, previously (mis)classified as a Wolf- Rayet star rather than an extreme O3 supergiant. Its high reddening means that we can achieve a S/N of 18 within the 58 min visibility period; even allowing 8 minutes for an HAlpha exposure will allow us to achieve a S/N of 17. For seven of our program stars, we also wish to obtain an observation at HAlpha, as our optical data shows strong nebular contamination that will be greatly suppressed by the use of a 0.2 arcsec slit. The exposure times for these stars are very short (<3 min using the G750M grating), and allowing for 5 minutes of overhead, we would increase the overall time needed by <8 min for these. We of course would like all of our stars to be observed, as these data provide a needed complement to our excellent ground-based data. we realize that the ``philosophy" of snapshot exposures is that no fixed percentage gets done. We were thus tempted to submit this as a regular proposal for 21 orbits in order to assure that all of our sample gets done, but it is simply wasteful to schedule 58 min for what we can accomplish in 15-40, and still achieve our science goals. We are hopeful that the TAC will find this project as interesting as we do, and that it will urge that a good fraction, if not all, of the objects be done; i.e., that we not be penalized for choosing to use the telescope efficiently.
