Abstract We propose snapshot observations of Uranus and Neptune to monitor changes in their atmospheres on time scales of months to years. Uranus is rapidly approaching equinox in 2007, with another 4 degrees of latitude in the northern hemisphere becoming visible every year. Recent HST images during this unique epoch (6818: Hammel, Lockwood, and Rages; 7429: Tomasko and Karkoschka; 7885: Hammel, Karkoschka, and Marley) have revealed: (i) strongly wavelength-dependent latitudinal structure, (ii) the presence of numerous visible-wavelength cloud features in the northern hemisphere, and, (iii) in the near-IR, discrete features northward of 25degrees N that have the highest contrast ever seen for a Uranian cloud (Karkoschka 1998c; Hammel et al. 1999). Long-term ground- based observations (Lockwood and Thompson 1999) show seasonal brightness changes whose origins are not well understood. Recent IR images of Neptune (http://www2.keck.hawaii.edu:3636/realpublic/ao/neptune.html) obtained using adaptive optics on the Keck Telescope indicate that a new "Bright Companion" type of feature has recently appeared in the southern hemisphere. Snapshot observations of these two dynamic planets can supply context in which to discern the nature of long-term changes in their latitudinal atmospheric bands and to track the appearance, movement, and disappearance of discrete albedo features. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8634( 2) - 02/18/00 14:10 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will use WFPC2 to obtain disk-resolved images of Uranus and Neptune in the 619-nm methane absorption band and in continuum regions from 467 nm to 953 nm. With these images, we will monitor medium- to long-term changes in the atmospheres of both planets, and compare the insolation-dominated behavior on Uranus with the internally-powered processes on Neptune. We have a chance to observe the formation, movement, and disappearance of individual features on Uranus, something which has not been possible to date with observations made at intervals of a year or more. We will gather data on the CTL variation of the bright albedo features on Neptune in order to model their vertical structure and determine the extent of their interaction with Neptune's stratosphere. Our filter selection is designed to constrain the vertical aerosol distribution responsible for the latitudinal bands and bright albedo features seen on Uranus and Neptune. We concentrate on two filters in which Uranus and Neptune are most likely to display variability on time scales of weeks or months, the 619 nm methane band filter and the near infrared continuum at 953 nm, and on two filters closely corresponding to Stromgren b and y, where there is already a record of planetary variability going back 25 years. We also select a filter at 673 nm as a nearby continuum comparison to 619 nm. These five filters will fit into one 30-minute observation of Uranus. We are requesting seven identical visits to Uranus, spaced at intervals of 1-2 months throughout the portion of Cycle 9 outside Uranus' solar exclusion window. Adequate exposures of Neptune in these five filters will not fit into a single 30-minute slot in the schedule, so we have split the Neptune observations into two different types of visit -- one which contains all the filters except 953 nm, and another which includes only 953 nm and a somewhat longer exposure of 619 nm -- 13 visits in all. We request that these two types of Neptune visit be alternated, and as for Uranus, we hope that they will be distributed at approximately equal intervals throughout the portion of Cycle 9 outside Neptune's solar exclusion window. We have included an AFTER special requirement on some of the visits only to indicate that we don't want them all bunched up at the beginning of the cycle, even should such an opportunity occur. If this requirement causes problems, or negatively impacts the scheduling, it can be deleted. Real Time Justification ----------------------- None.
