Abstract We propose to obtain high-resolution STIS images of the fields containing gamma-ray burst with well-localized coordinates; i.e. the burst has been localized to within approximately one arcsecond. The goal of this survey is to obtain a uniform sample of images of the host galaxies of these bursts. This data will be used to search for host galaxies that are too faint to be discovered by ground-based searches, to study the morphology of host galaxies, and to compare the population of galaxies that contain gamma-ray bursts to other populations of galaxies such as Lyman Break Galaxies, Damped Lyman-Alpha Absorption Systems, infrared galaxies. This survey will allow us to probe the star-formation rate in the high-redshift Universe and to study the nature of stellar populations at early epochs. We intend to waive all proprietary rights to this data, and will make optimally-combined images available to the astronomical community as soon as they are produced. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8640( 3) - 04/10/00 10:54 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We request that the fields containing a gamma-ray burst (GRB) with a well- localized position be observed with the STIS in its imaging mode using the 50CCD (clear) and F28X50LP (long pass) aperture. The STIS is ideal for these observations because the 0.05-arcsecond STIS pixels, and the wide bandpass of the 50CCD (clear) aperture, make it possible to obtain ultra-high resolution images of faint extended sources. The Planetary Camera has a similar pixel scale, but the combination of the STIS's greater sensitivity, superior noise characteristics, and the high throughput of the 50CCD (clear) aperture, makes us prefer the STIS to the WFPC2 for this project. The 50CCD (clear) aperture was selected because we are interested in the morphologies of the host galaxies and the locations of the GRBs relative to any substructure in the host galaxies. Color information is not essential for this project, but getting as many photons as possible is. The internal structures of most GRB host galaxies are unknown, so we have assumed a worst-case scenario (i.e. there is no internal structure) for the exposure time calculations. The host galaxies were modelled as circular discs with diameters of 0.5 arcseconds, total magnitudes of R = 25, and uniform surface brightnesses. This yields an R-band surface brightness of 23.3 mag/square-arcsecond, which is fainter than most of the galaxies in The Third Reference Catalogue of Bright Galaxies. Since the host galaxies are likely to contain internal sub-structure (bulges, spiral arms, etc.) the actual signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) in each pixel will depend on its location within each host galaxy, but it will be always be at least five for the central regions of the host galaxies and for any substructure that may be present. We used the STIS Imaging Exposure Time Calculator to estimate our exposure times assuming a flat-continuum spectrum, average zodiacal light, average Earth-shine, and no Galactic extinction. A total of 7800 seconds, or three orbits, per field) will yield an S/N per pixel of approximately five for a galaxy with a R-band surface brightness of 23.5 mag/square-arcsecond. This is comparable to the S/N per pixel obtained in the STIS images of the host galaxy of GRB 990123 taken on 8-9 February 1999 (GO/DD-8394). A S/N of approximately five per pixel is sufficient to distinguish substructure in the host galaxies from noise in the images. The morphologies of most of the host galaxies are unknown, so we have chosen to make surface-brightness limited observations. The details of the individual exposures (e.g., the exact exposure times, and the number of orbits per target) or the individual targets have been determined from the size and luminosity of each host galaxy. We will use a four-point box dithering pattern for the observations to optimize the spatial resolution of the images, to eliminate cosmic rays, and to allow us to construct flat fields. The individual images, and the optimally combined images for each field, will be made available to the astronomical community as soon as they are produced. In order to do this we request that the STIS observations of each host galaxy be taken no sooner than one year after the GRB was detected.
