Abstract Supernovae explode to create the chemical history of the Universe and energize the interstellar gas. They now occupy center stage for the extragalactic distance scale and cosmology. The SINS program has shown how HST can make unique contributions to understanding supernovae. HST is better than ever for this work: STIS is ideal for spatially-resolved observations of SN 1987A, where a rapidly developing encounter between the fast-moving debris and the stationary inner ring is underway. Observations of UV emission inside the inner ring of SN 1987A reveal the location and velocity of the reverse shock that also produces X-ray and radio emission. We also plan intensive study of illuminating objects beyond SN 1987A: a Target-of- Opportunity observation of a bright, new supernova that is certain to be discovered during Cycle 9, and the late-time observations of SN 1999by (SN Ia) and SN 1998bw, (SN Ic? and probably Gamma-ray burst). We request a 24-hour turn-around because the UV flux from supernovae changes rapidly in the first days and reveals much about the star. We will explore the UV emission from supernovae, exploit the spatial resolution of HST, and press the late-time observations of supernovae into uncharted territory. The SINS team enriches HST data with extensive ground-based support and analytic power to help understand the final and most violent stage of stellar evolution. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8648( 7) - 08/07/01 11:40 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ SN 1987A The specific aims for Cycle 9 STIS spectroscopy include continued monitoring of the development of the interaction shock, further spectroscopy of the hotspot as it evolves, and a definitive spectrum of the outer loop. To keep the size of this proposal reasonable, we will omit further mapping of the kinematics of the debris and the integrated spectrum of the debris from the Cycle 9 observations. These observations will have been carried out in Cycle 8, and the changes are slow. The spectrum of the interaction region will employ a wide slit at Ly-Alpha, as in our earlier work illustrated in Fig.6 . We expect that the interaction region will grow brighter and that artfully arranged observations will allow us to separate NV emission from the Ly-Alpha profile. STIS spectra of the hotspot, with the medium resolution gratings, will allow us to diagnose the shock that is crushing this peninsula of gas. We should be able to find the shock velocity, see non-equilibrium effects in regions of different density, and derive some properties of the shock geometry. We expect the hotspot will continue to brighten and that Cycle 9 observations will show significant differences from our first hotspot spectra. If a new brightening takes place, we arrange the slit to observe both. STIS spectra of the outer loop will require placing the 0.2" slit tangent to the emission as shown in Fig. 1. The proposed low and medium resolution gratings provide the most efficient combination to obtain all essential emission lines. By comparing O I 6300 and O II 3727 with O III lines we will determine the ionization state in the loop. O III (4959+5007)/4363, N II (6548+6583)/5755, and S II 6716/6731 line ratios will determine N_e and T_e. Exposure times have been estimated with the ETC to give S/N ratio >= 10 in the critical weak lines O III 4363 and N II 5755. SINS member Nino Panagia and his students have been industrious in using the parallel images obtained during our spectroscopic visits to provide a deep multi-band survey of this interesting segment of the LMC. We would like to continue this practice, which provides information on the stellar population and star formation history of this region. Our imaging program will provide continuing information on the debris luminosity and expansion, eruption of new hot spots, and recombination of the rings. If done in the CVZ, a complete set that connects with our earlier observations takes 6 orbits. One set of observations will suffice for most purposes, but the reconnaissance for eruption of new hot spots should be done again late in Cycle 9, which takes 4 additional orbits., SN 1999by To get a point beyond the range of ground-based data, at an age of about 600 days, we need two orbits to get two well-measured points on the light curve. We will continue to monitor the flux from the ground in 1999 and early 2000 to determine the optimum time to make the HST observation. , SN 1998bw To get a point where ground-based observations are futile, at an age of about 900 days, we will need two orbits to get to m=27. Models by Kozma and Fransson suggest that I- band is the best place to look and that this is the flux to be expected from an explosion based on the Woosley, Eastman and Schmidt model (ApJ 516, 788 (1999)). Additional flux from circumstellar interaction would make this measurement easier, but even an upper limit would be a powerful help to theoretical modelling of this extraordinary event. , Target of Opportunity We have developed a very effective set of observations which have worked well for SN1992A, SN1993J, SN1994I, and SN1998S to gather unique spectra in the UV with HST. We plan to observe at the earliest available moment the new HST system will allow, a week later, at age 1 month, at an age of about 150 days and again at age 1 year. At the latest time, we image in BVR and I to examine the neighborhood of the explosion and to get a solid point on the late-time lightcurve. Effective target acquisition schemes have been worked out in detail during Phase 2 for earlier cycles. What is new in this proposal is the request for express service which will give us the ability to get UV observations when the supernovae may be much brighter, and while important physical processes related to the outermost layers of the star and to the circumstellar gas can be studied. A UV echelle observation, which should reveal circumstellar features, will be practical with this rapid turn- around. Early low dispersion UV spectra will give the overall energy distribution, which has proved dramatically different for various types of supernovae, and a sensitive indicator of the outermost layers of the explosion. We need 6 orbits for the first rapid-response visit (1 orbit with G140L, 4 with E140M, and 1 orbit with the STIS CCD G230LB and G430L), 3 orbits for the second visit (G140L, G230L, and G430L), 5 for each of the later measurements, and 2 for the WFPC2 imaging, a total of 26 orbits for the ToO. begintableh begincenter captionObserving Summarylabeltbl-1 begintabularlllrlll & SN 1987A & SPECTROSCOPY , & & LyAlpha & 5 orbits , & & Hot spot, medium resolution & 6 orbits , & & Outer Loops & 14 orbits , & & IMAGING , & & 6 broad band 2 narrow band CVZ & 6 orbits , & & 2nd Epoch & 4 orbits , & SN 1987A & TOTAL & 34 orbits , & SN 1998bw & Imaging & 2 orbits , & SN 1999by & Imaging & 2 orbits , & SN 2001XX & prompt UV spectroscopy + late images & 26 orbits , & & GRAND TOTAL & 65 orbits, endtabular endcenter endtable Real Time Justification ----------------------- When SN 1987A is in the CVZ, we can make the most efficient use of the spacecraft in gathering our image data (which doesn't require a special roll angle). The STIS observations have too many constraints to be accommodated in this way. Our Target-of-Opportunity program would trigger for a supernova which we expect to reach maximum light brighter than 14 mag based on the distance and epoch of discovery, or fainter if there is also a gamma ray localization. The probability of having a 14 mag supernova in Cycle 9 is near unity-- especially considering the outstanding success of the automated supernova search being led by SINS-member Filippenko at Lick. Vigorous searches at CTIO and Kitt Peak involving SINS members Suntzeff and Phillips improve the chances of finding a suitable target. However, we have been scrupulous in applying high standards to our targets: avoiding crowded fields and obscuration by dust, while obtaining excellent astrometry and diagnostic spectroscopy from sites in Arizona, Texas, California, Chile, and Australia. Early observations are best for studying the UV emission from supernovae, which declines rapidly, and we request the most rapid response of which the STScI is capable. We are well aware of the Bahcall et al. proposal to observe a supernova within 100 kpc, based on a neutrino trigger. This could leave a gap which needs to be filled. If a supernova is discovered in the Local Group, but beyond 100 kpc, a more extensive program will be proposed by the SINS team for Director's Discretionary time. The SINS proposal is complementary to the Supernova- Circumstellar Medium proposal by Filippenko et al. which is for two objects: SN 1970G which is considerably older than any of the objects in this proposal and SN 1995G which is interacting with a much denser CSM than any of the SINS targets. None of the SINS targets has its emission powered principally by interaction with a CSM. The SINS collaboration is engaged in a broad range of supernova studies that make the HST observations more effective. There are supernova searches at Lick, Mount Stromlo, KPNO, CTIO, and McDonald Observatory, to help create our own opportunity. We have regular access to Keck, CTIO, ESO, and the MMT which we devote to study of objects in the SINS program. Kirshner, Sonneborn, and Pun have a bright supernova Target-of-Opportunity program approved for FUSE. Sonneborn leads a GTO program on FUSE to study SN 1987A. McCray has time allocated for Chandra studies of SN 1987A. Both the reverse shock and the hot spot are expected to be powerful X-ray sources. The combination of Chandra images and spectra with the SINS data will provide tremendous scientific leverage in understanding SN 1987A. Since the source varies on timescales of months, not days, the coordination of these observations in 2000-2001 should not be too difficult. Fransson, Filippenko, and Chevalier are Co-I's on a ToO program for SN with Chandra as is Kirshner for a ToO aimed at SN Ia, while Panagia is part of the program to observe radio emission from supernovae with the VLA.
