Abstract instrumentSTIS HST/STIS observations of Jupiter's aurora have revealed many fascinating and detailed aspects of these complex and energetic emission processes. The main UV emissions and their morphologies have been determined, with different emissions varying on time scales from seconds to days. With observations spaced months apart, and no record of the solar wind conditions near Jupiter, however, it has not been possible to determine the cause and effect relations governing the many variations. A unique opportunity to study these complex variations will exist when the Cassini spacecraft flys by Jupiter in December 2000. We propose to perform STIS observations of Jupiter's UV aurora in two campaigns along with Cassini measurements of the solar wind before closest approach, then another campaign when Cassini is just past Jupiter and looking back at the night side aurora. The proposed series of STIS observations, covering nearly complete Jupiter rotations, will permit us to perform several known key measurements of the auroral emissions, and also to study uniquely the effects of solar wind variations on the auroral morphology. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8657( 31) - 12/15/00 09:35 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Coordinated observations of the Jovian aurora between STIS, Cassini, and (to the extent possible) Galileo will be conducted in campaigns on or near Dec. 8- 9, 2000, Dec. 15-16, 2000, and Jan. 10-12, 2001. At these times there are no solar or lunar avoidance constraints on HST observations of Jupiter, and there are 20 day windows for the Cassini measurements for flexibility in HST scheduling. In each campaign we will use STIS for 5 orbits per day (i.e., 10 orbits each of the first two campaigns and 15 orbits for the last campaign). STIS images with 25MAMA and F25SRF2 will be obtained in Accum mode, and the latter in Time-Tag mode for limited times due to the high data rate (20, 000 counts/sec average). In the past we have obtained up to 300 sec Time-Tag images with a 100 sec buffer time, and we will carefully estimate the number of these images possible in a 5 orbit period without constraining the overall HST data rate. Five HST orbits will cover 9 hours, providing 320{\deg} of longitude coverage of the auroral emissions, which in the past has allowed us to identify the motions of features either fixed in longitude or in local time. Four HST orbits would provide 7.4 hours or 270{\deg} longitude coverage, leaving some portion of Jupiter's rotation unobserved. One or more Time-Tag images will be obtained in each orbit, with the remaining time having Accum images interspersed with Time-tag spectra at low, medium, and high spectral resolution. All spectra will be obtained with the sky apertures, either 52 x 0.5 for high spectral resolution or 52 x 2 for high sensitivity spatial profile measurements. All observing modes proposed here have been used successfully in past observations of Jupiter's aurora, including the long-aperture echelle observations which concentrate on the {\lya} emission line profile with little order overlap from the much fainter $H_2$ emissions. We will alternate observations of the North and South aurora, depending on which pole is angled toward the Earth. Dawn storms, the equatorward surge, and polar cap flares can all be observed from either pole, although the best observing geometry is of the northern aurora. Two of the campaigns will be carried out when Cassini is on the day side, prior to Jupiter closest approach: Dec. 8-9 and Dec. 15-16 are the proposed dates. The week separation between these campaigns has been selected based on the recent Ulysses solar wind density and speed variations [D. J. McComas et al., unpublished SWOOPS data, 1999] as Ulysses crossed the ecliptic plane near 5 AU during the rise toward solar maximum. This time scale often corresponds to the separation between compressions and rarefactions in corotating interaction regions [Gosling et al., 1996] near solar maximum. While a longer, two week or half solar rotation, separation would be a better choice near solar minimum conditions, near maximum the simple stream structure breaks down into two streams per rotation or an even more chaotic structure as the Sun's dipole field first disappears and then reemerges with the opposite polarity. In either case, the spatial scale of solar wind structure is shorter at these times, driving the choice of one week between observation times. Corotating interaction regions are known to influence the Earth environment when they encounter its magnetosphere, and extended time-resolved IUE observations suggest that they may be associated with enhanced auroral activity (and thus perturbed magnetospheric conditions) at Jupiter as well [Prang\'e et al., 1999]. This spacing allows us to study two different manifestations of the solar wind at 5 AU. The time of the observation is an optimization: 1) to place Cassini directly in the solar wind path that will impinge on the nose of the Jupiter subsolar magnetopause, 2) to allow the observations to be made as close as possible to allow coherent mapping of solar wind structures from Cassini to the Jupiter magnetopause (our proposed dates are 500 to 400 jovian radii upstream of Jupiter), and 3) at a time in the approach to Jupiter to best facilitate the proper operational support from the Cassini mission. Likewise, the campaign duration is chosen in order to monitor the solar wind with Cassini and the auroral intensity with HST over the complete time period from passage of the solar wind structure by the Cassini spacecraft until the structure is 400 jovian radii down the magnetotail and presumably no longer able to affect the aurora. This requires 50 hours of observations for a nominal solar wind speed of 400 kilometers per second. The third campaign will be conducted when Cassini is on the night side of Jupiter, with a duration of 7 Jupiter rotations or three Earth days. This night side campaign will 1) continue the study of the auroral effects of solar wind variability using both the Galileo and Cassini spacecraft as solar wind monitors; 2) allow the study of Jupiter's auroral patterns as a function of local time; and 3) may also allow in situ sampling of the jovian magnetosphere in the dusk sector to which the rapid variations of the STIS time-tagged aurora data have been magnetically mapped using MHD models [Walker et al., 1999]. The study of the jovian auroral morphology will make extensive use of Cassini visible auroral imaging of the $H_2$ aurora on the night side from ISS and UV observations of the aurora from UVIS. The STIS images will sample time scales of 1) 1-200 sec from the Time-Tag data, 2) 1-45 min. from Accum images, 3) hour to hour (with data gaps), and 4) changes with respect to Jupiter's 10 hour rotational period. From our experience with HST data, we can identify the daily morphology changes, variations in the satellite footprint emissions, dawn storms (seen both in the north and south), the polar cap and its flares with the proposed observations. Solar wind variability may occur on any of the time scales, and will be measured continuously by Cassini. These variations can then be cross-correlated with the continuous Cassini measurements. The observing strategy will not depend on the occurrence of low probability solar wind events to obtain meaningful results. Variations on all time scales will be measured and analyzed (i.e. large scale pressure changes in the solar wind over a week). Another issue is the limited HST sampling rate through a Jupiter rotation, due to STIS MAMA data rate limitations and observing only one pole at a time. To overcome the limited HST sampling, and the variable solar wind delay time from Cassini to the planet, Cassini solar wind data will be used as input into the Ogino and Walker MHD model to quantitatively guide the cross correlation analysis. This will be performed by Ray Walker [Ogino et al., 1998, Walker et al. 1999], and preliminary results suggest interesting solar wind interactions for northward interplanetary magnetic field conditions. Real Time Justification ----------------------- These observations must be scheduled in the HST visibility window closest to the proposed dates. Not knowing the orbital ephemeris of HST in late 2000, we will have to wait for the detailed scheduling. We have checked for solar and lunar avoidance constraints, and find none. The $\lya$ images and spectra should be obtained in, or close to, the dark time portion of the HST orbit, which will determine the order of exposures in each orbit.
