Abstract We propose STIS observations of the atmospheres of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune in the ~1600-3100 Angstrom spectral region. Analysis of these observations will be used to determine the abundance and altitude profiles of gaseous absorbers and aerosols from the millibar region to hundreds of millibars. We will also determine the H_2 ortho/para ratio. Atmospheric properties will be derived through comparison of the observations to synthetic spectra based on model atmospheres and state-of-the-art radiative transfer calculations, that include raman scattering in a rigorous manner. Results from this analysis will be used to investigate photochemical processes in the giant planet atmospheres and to constrain the state of the interiors and the transport rate between the deep interior and visible atmosphere. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8661( 4) - 08/31/00 10:44 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Our program consists of observations of all four giant planets. For Neptune, Uranus and Saturn we will use the G230L grating (MAMA detector) with the 52" x 0.05" slit. The angular sizes of Saturn, Uranus and Neptune are 19", 3.8" and 2.3", respectively, so the slit is filled in the dispersion direction, but only partly so in the cross-dispersion direction. The dispersion of 1.58 Angstrom/pixel and the 0.05" slit width imply a spectral resolution of 3.3 Angstrom. We plan to add spectra in the cross dispersion direction in order to produce a spectrum with the highest SNR possible for each planet. However, we can also examine the variations of intensity over the disc by preserving the spatial resolution of 0.024" and integrating in wavelength to increase SNR. The MAMA IFOV corresponds to 158 and 96 pixels across the disc of Uranus and Neptune respectively. The spectral integration will need to cover several hundred angstroms to achieve adequate SNR. These data can provide strong constraints on aerosol scattering properties. For Saturn we can get good SNR in two spectra across the disc of Saturn (Northern and Southern hemispheres) with this configuration. Final decisions about spatial binning can, of course, be made after data acquisition. Jupiter is too bright to be observed with the NUV MAMA detectors therefore we will use the G230LB grating and the CCD detector. This grating covers essentially the same wavelength region as G230L (1600-3000 Angstrom ) with comparable dispersion but twice the plate scale. The CCD is capable of measuring much higher signal rates than the MAMA detector. We will use the CCD in the low gain (G=1) state for optimal performance. The Jupiter observations will use 52" x 0.1" slit providing a spectral resolution of 2.7 Angstrom. The count rates are high enough to permit use of the spatial imaging capabilities of STIS. We anticipate acquiring ~ 10 high quality spectra across the disc of Jupiter. As discussed in the previous section, we need a precision of a few percent to adequately study the raman features near 2000 Angstrom. Calculations presented below demonstrate that this can be achieved in 5 orbits for Uranus and 10 orbits for Neptune. We anticipate that the Uranus observations can be carried out in 5 contiguous orbits and the Neptune orbits in two sets of 5 contiguous orbits. The observing strategy outlined above on SNRs estimated using the parameters listed in tables 1 and 2. The UV flux from Jupiter is taken from Betremieux and Yelle (1999a) whereas the Uranus and Neptune values are taken from Courtin et al. (1996). The UV flux from Saturn is obtained by scaling the Uranus value assuming that intensity varies as the inverse square of heliocentric distance and that the albedo of Saturn is half that of Uranus. We assume in all cases that the intensity of UV radiation is uniform over the disc. For Uranus and Neptune we use the semi-major axis to approximate the distance from HST to Uranus and Neptune. For Jupiter and Saturn, we assume that observations are made at opposition, so that the STIS slit can be aligned along the central meridian. The SNR estimate for Uranus and Neptune assume a disc-averaged spectrum, i.e. the counting rate from all spatial pixels are summed. For Jupiter we use a CCD gain of 1 and sum 100 spatial pixels. This gives about 10 spatial samples across the disc of Jupiter. For Saturn we sum 400 pixels and obtain only two spectra across the disc. We adopt a read noise of 4 e/s for the CCD and 0 counts/s for the MAMA. We used dark count rates of 1x10^-3 for the MAMA and 2.5x10^-3 for the CCD. We estimate that we can achieve 2000 seconds of integration time per orbit. For Uranus, a group of 5 orbits - the most that can be achieved with continuous viewing - satisfies the integration time requirements. For Neptune 10 orbits are needed. This should be broken into 2 blocks of 5 that are taken as close in time as possible. However, precise timing is not critical. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Jupiter and Saturn must be observed near opposition, both occur in November of 2000. All observations should take place reasonably close in time with respect to each other.
