Abstract Galaxy mergers are believed responsible for triggering starburst and AGN activity in galaxies, and even perhaps transforming spiral galaxies into ellipticals. Ground- based observations and numerical simulations have shed light on these issues, but have not been able to adequately resolve the nuclei of merging galaxies. However, it is these nuclei where most of the important physical processes operate, and where a direct study of the stellar and gaseous components yields crucial insight on any picture of merger-driven galaxy evolution. We will use HST to study the structural, star-forming, and kinematic properties of the galactic nuclei in the `Toomre Sequence' of merging galaxies, at unprecedented spatial resolution. Broad-band WFPC2 images with F555W and F814W will be used in concert with narrow-band Halpha+[NII] images to study the connection between nuclear morphology and the structure of the ionized gas. The two-dimensional velocity field of the nuclear gas will be probed via medium resolution STIS G750M observations, while lower resolution G430L spectroscopy will study the young and old stellar populations in the merging nuclei. Our study will provide the first comprehensive view of the physical conditions in strongly interacting and merging galactic nuclei, and, will place strong constraints on theories of merger-driven activity and evolution in galaxies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8669( 10) - 04/03/02 17:06 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Overall layout-------------- We will observe each merging system for one to five orbits. Usually the first two orbits will be used for WFPC2 imaging, and the remaining orbits for STIS spectroscopy. For the 11 galaxies in our sample, we need a total of 43 orbits. In addition to their scientific use, the WFPC2 images will yield accurate coordinates for the galaxy nuclei as well as flux distributions at high spatial resolution. These will allow us to optimize our observational strategy for the spectroscopic observations (choice of target acquisition strategy, slit position angles, etc.). The WFPC2 imaging must therefore always be obtained first, in a separate visit, so that we can use it as `early-acquisition' data. All STIS visits were ON HOLD, until the WFPC2 images had been analyzed. All STIS visits have to be executed at a fixed ORIENT, but the actual value of the orientation was not known until after the analysis of the WFPC2 images. Target naming conventions------------------------ - We have adopted the following target naming conventions for the nuclei of the Toomre-sequence galaxies: *-NUC1-* : The first nucleus of a pair of merging galaxies in which there are two nuclei. *-NUC2-* : The second nucleus of a pair of merging galaxies in which there are two nuclei. *-NUCA-* : The average position of the two nuclei for a pair of merging galaxies in which there are two nuclei. *-NUC-* : The nucleus of a merger remnant that has only one nucleus. The last part of the target name indicates whether the target and its coordinates are to be used for the imaging or the spectroscopy part of the program: *-*-IM : Coordinates that are to be used for the taking of one or more WFPC2 images. The coordinates supplied for these targets can be used to actually schedule the WFPC2 imaging, and should not change. *-*-SP : Coordinates that are to be used for the taking of one or more STIS exposures. The coordinates for these targets have been updated after analysis of the early -acquisition WFPC2 images. Target numbering conventions------------------------ ---- Let j be the sequential number of one of the 11 galaxies in the Toomre sequence. Then the target numbering is as follows: 5*(j-1) + 1 : *-NUC1-IM or * -NUCA-IM or *-NUC-IM (whichever applies) 5*(j-1) + 2 : *-NUC2-IM (if applicable) 5*(j-1) + 3 : *-NUC1-SP or *-NUCA-SP or *-NUC-SP (whichever applies) 5*(j-1) + 4 : *-NUC2-SP (if applicable) 5*(j-1) + 5 : used for offset target acquisition sources in two cases (NGC 4038 and NGC 6621) Visit numbering conventions---------------------------- Let j be the sequential number of one of the 11 galaxies in the Toomre sequence. Then the visit numbering is as follows: 5*(j-1) + 1 : WFPC2 imaging of *-NUC1-IM or *-NUCA-IM or *-NUC-IM (whichever applies) 5*(j-1) + 2 : WFPC2 imaging of *-NUC2-IM (if applicable) 5*(j-1) + 3 : STIS G750M spectroscopy of *-NUC1-SP or *-NUCA-SP or *-NUC-SP (whichever applies) 5*(j-1) + 4 : STIS G750M spectroscopy of *-NUC2-SP (if applicable) 5*(j-1) + 5 : STIS G430L spectroscopy of one or more of the *-*-SP targets. Exceptions: Visit 27 is a second STIS G750M spectroscopy visit of NGC 6621 and Visit 57 is a reobservation of NGC4676-NUC2-IM because the first observations was lost due to technical problems with the WFPC2 shutter. WFPC2 imaging------------- We will obtain broad-band images of each galaxy in the V (F555W) and I (F814W) bands. To obtain the highest possible spatial resolution, we will place each galaxy nucleus on the PC chip. We will also obtain narrow- band images centered on Halpha+[NII]. For most galaxies this requires the use of the linear-ramp filter (LRF). To determine the target placement for the LRF we use the wavelength that is obtained by redshifting a vacuum wavelength of 6570 Angstrom. The latter is the weighted mean H_alpha+[NII] wavelength for a typical set of line ratios. For most galaxies this places the target on the WF2 chip, but for one or two it may be on the PC chip. Two galaxies (NGC 3509, 7592) have velocities which fortuitously redshift the Halpha+[NII] lines into the F673N filter (typically used for SII at zero redshift). For these F673N observations we will also place the targets on a PC chip. During data reduction we will construct continuum-free Halpha+[NII] images by subtracting an appropriate average of the V and I images from each narrow- band image. In general, to observe both nuclei in a merging system separate pointings are needed, so we plan to spend one orbit on each nucleus. In each orbit we take 5 minute exposures with F555W and F814W, and a 20 minute exposure with the LRF or F673N. The field of view for each image is approximately 10'' for LRF images, approximately 36'' for PC images, and approximately 80'' for WF-chip images. Three galaxies, NGC 2623, 3921 and 7252, have a single nucleus, so that only one pointing is necessary. Two other galaxies, NGC 3509 and 7592, have larger nuclear separations but can be observed using the F673N in a single pointing. Hence, for these five galaxies we use only a single orbit for WFPC2 imaging. For some of the remaining galaxies a single pointing suffices for the broad- band images, but not for the LRF images. Since the latter are the more time consuming, we still use two orbits (two LRF images of the required S/N cannot be obtained in a single orbit). The necessary imaging for NGC 4038/9 (the Antennae) already exists in the HST Data Archive; we therefore use no imaging time for this galaxy. Some other galaxies have selected broad-band imaging available in the HST Data Archive, but no narrow-band imaging. For the two galaxies (NGC 3921 and NGC 7252) where matched, PC-centered F555W and F814W observations exist, we will spend all of the imaging orbit on the narrowband imaging. Two other galaxies (NGC 3256, NGC 6621) have F814W images available, but not F555W images. To retain the uniformity of the dataset, we will observe these objects in both F555W and F814W, with the nuclei centered on the PC chip in each case. STIS spectroscopy----------------- We will use STIS for medium- resolution spectroscopy to study emission-line kinematics, and for low- resolution spectroscopy to study stellar populations. Most observations will use the 0.2''-wide slit (52X0.2), which provides the best compromise between spatial resolution and S/N. To reduce read-noise we will often use 2 pixel on- chip rebinning in the spatial direction, yielding effective apertures of 0.1''*0.2'' along the slit. We will also use 2 pixel on-chip binning in the spectral direction for many observations. This ensures critical sampling, since the 0.2'' slit width projects to 4 pixels in the dispersion direction. In cases of high estimated S/N ratios (from WFPC2 images), we use the 0.1'' slit and/or no binning. The medium spectral resolution observations will be made with the G750M grating at prime tilt lambda_cen = 6768 Angstrom. This yields spectra over the range 6482-7054 Angstrom, covering not only the Halpha+[NII] lines for all galaxies, but also the (redshifted) [SII] lines at 6716 Angstrom and 6731 Angstrom. The spectral resolution is 2.24 Angstrom FWHM, which corresponds to a Gaussian instrumental velocity dispersion of sigma = 40 km/s. The low spectral resolution observations will be done with the G430L grating (11 Angstrom FWHM), providing spectral coverage from 2900 Angstrom to 5700 Angstrom, which includes the diagnostic features of interest for stellar population work. With the G750M grating we will observe most merging systems for either one or two orbits, based on the S/N as estimated from our WFPC2 images. The galaxies NGC 2623, 3256, 3509, 3921, 4676, 520, 7252, 7592 and 7764 have only one unambiguous nucleus, so for these galaxies we require only one visit with G750M. For each G750M observation we will place the slit along the major axis of the gas distribution associated with the given nucleus, determined from the WFPC2 narrow-band images, or along a kinematic major axis as determined from ground- based published data. With the G430L grating we will observe the systems for one to two orbits. Our objective- to determine radial stellar population gradients at high spatial resolution - does not require a particular slit orientation. Hence, we are at liberty to place the slit along the line joining the nuclei, so that both can be observed in a single observation. This is possible for NGC 4676 and 6621/22. In most systems we can obtain the G430L observations in the same visit as the G750M observations because these systems have only one unambiguous nucleus. Additionally, we will not observe NGC 7252 and NGC 3921 with G430L; such observations already exist in the HST data archive. To summarize, the general STIS strategy for each galaxy is: one to two G750M orbits on nucleus 1, another one to two G750M orbits on nucleus 2 (if there is a second nucleus), and one to two G430L orbits covering both nuclei in a separate visit or the single nucleus in the same visit as the G750M observations. Each visit will have a different slit orientation. Target acquisitions will be done on the nucleus itself for those cases were this is not prevented by a complicated morphology. In two cases the acquisition will be done on a nearby object, followed by an accurate slew to the position of the nucleus. The final choice of target acquisition strategy has been made after we have studied the early-acquisition WFPC2 images. Additional peak-up acquisitions are not necessary with the 0.2''-slit, and since we are observing three parallel positions, they are not necessary with the 0.1'' slit either. With the G430L grating we will generally take 3 exposures, with the target stepped along the slit, to allow accurate hot pixel removal. With the G750M grating we will observe at three different positions offset perpendicular to the slit. This strategy of securing data along three parallel slits yields constraints on the 2D structure of the velocity field that is essential for a proper interpretation of the kinematics. At each position we will take 2 exposures, with the target stepped along the slit, to allow accurate hot pixel removal. We will use the new E1 apertures to try to avoid Charge Transfer Efficiency problems. We have been careful to avoid putting targets under the fiducial bars at about 11'' from the center of the slit. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Calibration Justification ------------------------- Additional Comments ------------------- The proposal generates feasibility diagnostics when RPS2 is run. These can be ignored. The diagnostics state that some POS TARGs move the target outside of the spectroscopic aperture. This is not a problem, because all targets are extended. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8669( 10) - 04/03/02 17:06 - [ 3] TARGET LIST Fixed Targets ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tar| Target | Target | Target |Coord | Radial | Flux data No | Name | Description | Position |Eqnx | Vel. | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3 NGC4038-NUC1 GALAXY, NUCLEUS RA-OFF=0.0914S+/- 0.002S, DEC- J2000 V = 1630 V = 9.59+/-0.5 -SP OFF=6.9980000000000002"+/- 0.01", FROM 5, PLATE-ID=04UV Coordinate Source: HST_IMAGE 4 NGC4039-NUC2 GALAXY, NUCLEUS RA=12H 1M 53.5384S +/- 0.01", J2000 V = 1600 V = 9.59+/-0.5 -SP DEC=-18D 53' 9.329" +/- 0.01", PLATE-ID=04UV Coordinate Source: HST_IMAGE 5 NGC4038- GALAXY, STAR FORMING RA=12H 1M 52.9723S +/- 0.01", J2000 V = 1600 V = 17.5+/-0.2 OFFSET REGION DEC=-18D 52' 8.305" +/- 0.01", PLATE-ID=04UV Coordinate Source: HST_IMAGE 6 NGC4676-NUC1 GALAXY, NUCLEUS RA=12H 46M 10.07S +/- 0.5", J2000 V = 6632 V = 13.1+/-0.5 -IM DEC=30D 43' 55.3" +/- 0.5" Coordinate Source: OTHER_SOURCE 7 NGC4676-NUC2 GALAXY, NUCLEUS RA=12H 46M 11.31S +/- 0.5", J2000 V = 6590 V = 13.1+/-0.5 -IM DEC=30D 43' 23.0" +/- 0.5" Coordinate Source: OTHER_SOURCE 9 NGC4676-NUC2 GALAXY, NUCLEUS RA=12H 46M 11.1682S +/- 0.01", J2000 V = 6590 V = 13.1+/-0.5 -SP DEC=30D 43' 21.174" +/- 0.01", PLATE-ID=01PM Coordinate Source: HST_IMAGE 11 NGC7592-NUCA GALAXY, NUCLEUS RA=23H 18M 22.15S +/- 0.5", DEC= J2000 V = 7328 V = 13.6+/-0.5 -IM -04D 24' 58.0" +/- 0.5", PLATE- ID=02NF Coordinate Source: HST_IMAGE 14 NGC7592-NUC2 GALAXY, NUCLEUS RA=23H 18M 21.7295S +/- 0.01", J2000 V = 7328 V = 13.6+/-0.5 -SP DEC=-04D 24' 56.718" +/- 0.01", PLATE-ID=02NF Coordinate Source: HST_IMAGE 16 NGC7764A- GALAXY, NUCLEUS RA=23H 53M 23.6S +/- 0.5", DEC=- J2000 V = 9162 V = 14.6+/-0.5 NUC1-IM 40D 48' 24" +/- 0.5" Coordinate Source: OTHER_SOURCE 18 NGC7764A- GALAXY, NUCLEUS RA=23H 53M 23.7352S +/- 0.01", J2000 V = 9162 V = 14.6+/-0.5 NUC1-SP DEC=-40D 48' 26.325" +/- 0.01", PLATE-ID=011S Coordinate Source: HST_IMAGE 21 NGC6621-NUC1 GALAXY, NUCLEUS RA=18H 12M 55.25S +/- 0.5", J2000 V = 6215 V = 14.6+/-0.5 -IM DEC=68D 21' 48.4" +/- 0.5", PLATE-ID=00T0 Coordinate Source: HST_IMAGE 22 NGC6622-NUC2 GALAXY, NUCLEUS RA=18H 12M 59.54S +/- 0.5", J2000 V = 6456 V = 14.6+/-0.5 -IM DEC=68D 21' 15.4" +/- 0.5", PLATE-ID=00T0 Coordinate Source: HST_IMAGE 23 NGC6621-NUC1 GALAXY, NUCLEUS RA-OFF=-0.5873S+/- 0.002S, DEC- J2000 V = 6215 V = 14.6+/-0.5 -SP OFF=2.5619999999999998"+/- 0.01", FROM 25, PLATE-ID=00T0 Coordinate Source: HST_IMAGE 25 NGC6621- STAR, UNDESIGNATED RA=18H 12M 55.8337S +/- 0.01", J2000 V = 1600 V = 18.8+/-0.2 OFFSET DEC=68D 21' 45.968" +/- 0.01", PLATE-ID=00T0 Coordinate Source: HST_IMAGE 8669( 10) - The slit offset angle is 45.35. The ORIENT range is constrained by the requirement that the slit should go exactly through both the presumed nucleus and a B-band peak, which is the same as the OFFSET point used for acquisition. Since we want to use the 52X0.2E aperture, we put row 893 on the nucleus. Therefore the slit +Y- axis must point from B-band peak towards the nucleus.Separation of the two is 7.1 arcsec. Since a bar in the slit is at 11.2-12.1 arcsec, we should move away from it by 20 pixels or 1 arcsec. Added a pos targ correspondently. The slit angle is 45.35. The range in ORIENT is zero since we need very accurate alignment to put both nuclei (6621, 6622) on the same slit. Only one orientation is ok, since we are using the 52x0.2E1 aperture centered on NGC 6621 and we need to cover the nucleus of NGC 6622 as well. The bar positions should not be a problem since the nuclei are 42 arcsec apart. NGC 6621 is the weaker of the two so we use the 52x0.2E1 aperture on that.
