Abstract We propose to characterize the young, coeval stellar population discovered with WFPC2 multiband imaging in a NGC6822 star forming region, with follow-up spectroscopy of the massive star candidates. Photometry alone is not sensitive to accurate measurements of temperature and extinction for stars hotter than B2. Blue spectra will provide spectral type classification, and measurements of the stellar temperature, which will allow us to construct meaningful H-R diagrams. UV spectra will provide critical measurements of ionizing luminosities, wind velocity and mass loss. STIS configurations allow a most effective observing strategy: we will take UV spectra in slitless mode, and the optical spectra with the STIS long slit in the G430L range, which will also provide spatially resolved information on the surrounding parent nebula. The UV plus optical spectra will yield a quantitative determination of all stellar parameters, and of the extinction properties, in this extremely metal-poor HII region. This study will provide a step forward in understanding how massive star formation (initial mass function, radiative and dynamical balance) and evolution depend on metallicity and other environmental factors. Resolved studies of local starbursts provide a key to interpret active star -forming distant galaxies. We also request WFPC2 parallel imaging to continue our stellar population study. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8675( 7) - 04/29/02 11:39 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ centerline Primary Observations At a declination of - 14^degrees, we will have a visibility period of 52 min per orbit. We break our program into several visits as follows. Two visits (8 orbits in total for spectroscopy plus two intial snapshots of the field) will be used for first order slitless spectroscopy with STIS+G140L (3 orbits twice) and STIS+G230L (1 orbit twice) respectively. The two visits will have different orientations to avoid overlap of the spectra. The total exposure will yield (assuming an average extinction of E(B-V)=0.26) S/N>= 3-15 (across the range) at full resolution for the 13 stars down to measured m_V ~ 19.5. S/N=10 corresponds to S/N ~ 30 at ~ 5 Angstrom resolution in the G140L, which is still useful to study strong, broad UV wind lines. The exposures will also give detectable spectral fluxes down to m_V ~ 21, which includes 21 additional stars. For the faintest of these, broad band continuum measurements at 1600--1700Angstrom will still yield valuable information on extinction and luminosity. The best spectra will permit also quantitative line profile studies. STIS+G430L with the 52x0.5 long slit will be used to obtain classification spectra of the 19 brightest stars in the field. We need a minimum S/N of 25 per spectral resolution element for spectral classification at this resolution (4 Angstrom) and with the weak lines that characterize the temperature sensitive lines in O and early B stars (He I Lambda 4471, He II Lambda 4542, Si IV Lambda 4089, Si III Lambda 4552). A 0.5'' wide long slit is a good choice for easy target acquisition, rejection of spurious sources, good photometry, high throughput, and fairly narrow sky lines. The resolution is still 1.5pxls according to the STIS manual. For stars down to m_V ~ 20.3 we will achieve S/N >= 25 in two orbits. We made extensive simulations to find optimum orientations so to include at least two objects of comparable brightness in each long slit position. We took into account that the NGC6822 location is in the HST Sun avoidance region for part of the year, which makes the range of PA (Position Angle)=80---260 unavailable: thus we restricted the choice to allowed orientations avoiding deviations from optimum roll. Five different pointings, but with the same PA (therefore in the same visit, which will save some overhead), for a total exposure time of 7 orbits, will contain 11 stars brighter than m_V =20.27 (measured, not corrected for reddening). Four other pairs of stars will be observed in eight more orbits (different PAs). Thus, 15 orbits will cover all the 19 stars brighter than 20.3. Our targets are brighter than m_V =20.3 so no blind offset is required in most cases. Whenever one of the targets to be placed in the long slit does not have stars of comparable brightness within 2'', we can directly center the slit on this target and avoid blind offset. For the three most crowded stars we proceed as follows. We will acquire a relatively bright, isolated offset star within 2 arcminutes of each target, and then do blind offsets to put the target in the 0.5'' slit. The positions have been measured on our WFPC2 images. We estimate the overheads as follows: 6 minutes for the initial guide star acquisition, and 5 minutes for each subsequent re-acquisition. The ACQ on the offset star will require 6 additional minutes. We allow 6 minutes for the initial STIS exposure, and 1 minute for each additional one (no change in spectrograph configuration). , centerline Parallel Observations In general, we want to image with parallel exposures regions of NGC6822 with U, B, V and UV filters (F170W and F255W), for stellar population studies and to especially detect hot massive stars and young compact clusters. The two settings parallel to the slitless UV spectroscopy (4 orbits each) will allow deep imaging (a factor of 4 deeper than the data shown in Figure 2). Also, parallel fields 3 to 7 (coordinated to targets HV-1 to HV- 5) will mostly overlap as the positions of the primary pointing differ by only few arcsec, but the PA is the same, yielding very deep photometry. Parallels 8 to 11 will sample different regions (primary exposures need different PA) but will still give a factor of 2 deeper exposures than our previous photometry (Bianchi et al 1999d, and Figure 2). Real Time Justification ----------------------- The observations must be performed at specific orientations, which translates into time intervals. The slitless UV spectra will be performed at two different orientations, to avoid overlap of the spectra. Two orientations were found such that in each one most of the spectra do not overlap. The long slit spectra with the G430L grating include at least two targets (of comparable brightness) per pointing. Five of these observations can be performed with the same PA (i.e. in the same visit). The accuracy of the HST roll (0.003 deg), combined with pointing uncertainties, still exceeds by a factor of 10 the required accuracy to center two objects in the slit within <= 0.1''. Most objects have less than 10'' separation. We checked the HST SpaceCraft angles throughout the year for the NGC6822 position, to verify that the observing strategy will not be excessively complicated to schedule. At the time of our preferred orientations, the maximum HST roll deviation (30 degrees) is allowed for the NGC6822 position, which means the observing window is comfortably long. No further supporting observations are required. We have fully analysed our WFPC2 photometry of this region with U, B, V and F255W filters. The results provided the justification and choice of targets for the proposed investigation, and the exposure time estimates.
