Abstract Variability in the strength of absorption lines in quasar spectra is definitive proof that we are observing material that is physically associated with the quasars. We propose to conduct a STIS snapshot survey to provide second epoch observations of 37 quasars with narrow associated (Delta v<5000 kms) or broad absorption lines (NALs and BALs), previously observed with the FOS. At high redshift several intrinsic NALs and about two thirds of BALs are known to vary, often in accord with continuum variability. The amplitudes increase and the timescales decrease with decreasing quasar luminosity. The low-redshift sample of quasars in the FOS archive includes a larger fraction of nearby low-luminosity quasars. Thus it may show more extreme variability in intrinsic absorption lines than the high redshift sample. The present study will provide: (1) an estimate of the fraction of quasars that have intrinsic NALs, (2) a lower limit on the fraction of intrinsic NALs and of BALs that are variable and (3) an indication of the relationships between continuum, emission line, and absorption line variability in various chemical species. More importantly, this snapshot survey will produce a database of variable low-z NALs and BALs for studies at higher temporal and spectral resolution. Well resolved time variability and partial coverage analysis of multiple chemical transitions in these quasars may well provide the most detailed views yet of outflows from the central engines. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8681( 3) - 03/06/00 11:37 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ The goal of this snapshot study is to obtain S/N > 20--30 G230L or G140L spectra with STIS that can be compared with previously obtained FOS spectra (R=1300) to search for variability. This will not be a complete or unbiased survey, but since very little is known about variability of associated absorbers at low redshift, a lot of information should be gained. Also, the variable targets can be proposed for more detailed studies later. Where possible, we would like to obtain third epoch observations (two snapshots of the same quasar with STIS), but since the FOS spectra already exist, this is not essential to the program. Three types of objects will be studied: \medskip next1 A sample of C IV NALs detected at the 3Sigma level from the Key Project sample of quasars (Bahcall et al. 1993, 1996; Jannuzi et al. 1998). Some of these quasars have detected N V and O VI absorption at the same redshift, and these are judged more likely to be intrinsic to the quasar due to their high ionization state. The purpose is to assess the incidence of NALs in a relatively unbiased sample of low redshift quasars, which requires us to distinguish them from intervening systems. Although variability is not guaranteed in an intrinsic absorber, its detection is proof that the absorber is intrinsic. next2 A sample of NALs drawn from the entire FOS archive, including all systems with probable intrinsic NALs, that have strong absorption in CIV, N V, and/or O VI. These were compiled from an objective search of the archival spectra, but systems for which the line identifications were uncertain were disregarded. This sample has a high probability for variability. next3 A sample of the BAL quasars previously observed with the FOS at R=1300. \medskip Within these classes of objects in the FOS archive, we must apply two additional criteria: \medskip next4 The NAL of interest must be covered with the G230L (1570--3180 Angstrom) grating of STIS, which provides a resolution of 3.16 Angstrom. next5 It must be possible to obtain a spectrum at S/N>20 (and preferably 30) within a reasonable fraction of the SNAP orbits that are available. A S/N=30 was the target number for the Key Project Search for intervening absorbers, which provide the first epoch observations for many of our targets. For extremely strong, saturate absorption lines, teh criterion of S/N>20 is relaxed in just a few cases. \medskip The distribution of time for snaps is 20--45 minutes, with a flat distribution between these values. We propose observations using the 52"*0.2" slit, so that we do not need the peakup for target acquisition. The overhead for each exposure is thus 6 minutes for guide star acquisition plus 6 minutes for target acquisition, plus 8 minutes for the MAMA spectroscopy overhead. The total overhead per target is 20 minutes. This leaves up to 25 minutes of exposure time per snap. Clearly, only the brightest targets will fit into the shortest snap opportunities. However, Table 1 shows that the majority of the targets will yield S/N>30 in more than half of the snap opportunities. Table 1 lists the quasars, redshifts determined from emission lines, target NAL (i.e. CIV, N V, or O VI, exposure times needed for S/N = 20 and 30 on the target, and other transitions covered by the same grating. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Targets should be observed more than once if possible, but this is not essential to our program since FOS observations of these same quasars already exist. If there are multiple observations of the same target, we will be able to get much better constraints on the time scale of variability and hence on the geometry and location of the absorber.
