Abstract Kinematic black hole detections in galaxies indicate that the mass M_bh correlates with both optical luminosity L and radio power P. However, these quantities are themselves not tightly correlated, suggesting the existence of a multi-variate relation between M_bh, L and P. To study this relation we will undertake a WFPC2 I- band snapshot survey of brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs). BCGs have a nearly universal optical luminosity, but their radio power varies by >10^4. We will infer the nuclear surface brightness profiles and central cusp slopes, which yield photometric BH mass determinations using Young's adiabatic BH growth models. Such determinations agree well with kinematical measurements (van der Marel 1999), so this provides an efficient method to study a large sample without time-consuming spectroscopy. We focus on the galaxies in the volume limited sample (z <= 0.05) that we have studied from the ground at optical (Lauer & Postman) and radio (Owen, O'Dea) wavelengths. We will use the HST data to estimate the scatter in cusp slope and M_bh at fixed optical luminosity, and its correlation with radio power. The images will also provide an important database for studying the relation between satellite accretion, multiple nuclei and the brightness profiles of BCGs. The dataset will be generally useful for studies of many kinds, and for maximum benefit to the community we give up all proprietary rights. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8683( 3) - 04/11/00 08:51 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ All images will be taken with the WFPC2. We will use the F814W broad-band filter, which is similar to the photometric I-band. The choice of a near-IR filter minimizes the sensitivity of the inferred surface brightness profiles to the possible presence of dust. Also, the F814W does not include strong emission lines, which is important because many BCGs possess bright ionized gas nebulae (possibly associated with cluster cooling flows). It is important for the scientific goals of our project to obtain the maximum possible spatial resolution. We will therefore take all exposures while guiding with the Fine Guidance Sensors in Fine Lock (the telescope drift under gyro control would be unacceptable). To maximize spatial resolution we will place all targets on the PC chip. There is no danger of saturation for our targets, so all observations will be done with a gain setting of 7 electrons/ADU. Each exposure sequence will consist of a guide-star acquisition, followed by a CR-split WFPC2 exposure of the target. The total exposure sequence takes 26 minutes, which is short enough for maximum scheduling flexibility. STScI staff may extend our exposure times when more than 26 minutes are available in the HST schedule, but such longer exposures are not critical to achieve the scientific goals of our program. A typical BCG has M_V = -22.6. For this luminosity, the core parameter correlations for elliptical galaxies predict at the break radius r_b of the brightness profile, a V-band surface brightness mu_b, V = 18.0 mag/arcsec^-2 (e.g., Lauer 1985; Faber et al. 1997). The surface brightness inside r_b is approximately twice that at r_b (by definition). Also, the centers of elliptical galaxies typically have V- I = 1.35 (Carollo et al. 1997). So we expect an I-band surface brightness mu = 15.9 mag/arcsec^-2 in the central regions of our sample galaxies. We have used the WFPC2 Exposure Time Calculator to calculate the predicted S/N, given our proposed setup and the expected surface brightness. The result is S/N = 50 per PC pixel, or equivalently, a 1- sigma error in the inferred surface brightness of 0.02 mag. This is appropriate and sufficient for the scientific goals of our project.
