Abstract A fundamental gap that remains in our knowledge of AGNs is the origin and dynamics of the gas that produces their broad optical and ultraviolet emission lines. In most other accreting systems, emission lines are demonstrably linked either to the accretion disk or to an accretion-disk wind; these are both leading hypotheses for the origin of emission lines in AGNs as well. We can test both of these models by exploiting the extreme properties of the so-called ``double- peaked emitters.'' These very broad double-peaked emission lines have proven to be uniquely capable of testing dynamical models, and as a result several theories are no longer considered likely. The two major theories that are the subject of this proposal require HST for their evaluation because they make contrasting predictions about the differences between the Balmer-line and UV resonance-line profiles. In fact, there is good evidence that both photoionized disk atmospheres and radiatively driven winds contribute to observed emission lines in varying degrees. We have preliminary evidence that points toward luminosity as the primary factor which controls the relative importance of disk and wind. By observing a set of four more double-peaked emitters covering a wide range of luminosity, we will test the hypothesis that photoionized disk atmospheres dominate line production at low luminosity and winds dominate at high luminosity. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8684( 3) - 06/04/01 16:31 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ The main objective of this proposal is to obtain spectra of the UV emission lines and UV continua of AGNs that are known to have double-peaked Balmer lines. We need line profiles of LyAlpha, C iv Lambda1550, C iiiLambda1909, and Mg ii Lambda2800 that are of sufficient signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) to permit detailed modeling. For the low-redshift objects (PKS 0921--213, NGC 1097), spectra with the STIS/MAMA (gratings G140L and G230L) will cover the necessary spectral range. But for the moderate-redshift objects (PKS 1739+184, 3C 332), the important Mg ii line straddles the atmospheric cutoff, and a good Mg ii spectrum cannot be obtained from the ground. Therefore, we will also obtain spectra of PKS 1739+184 and 3C 332 using the STIS/CCD with grating G430L, to cover their Mg ii lines. An FOS spectrum of 3C 332 with the G270H grating that we obtained in Cycle 5 covered only half of its Mg ii line, although it is clear from the results that the line is very broad and probably double peaked. We also plan to re-observe the LyAlpha line of 3C 332 because the FOS/G130H was not sensitive enough to detect its faint, broad wings. For all of our observations we will use the 0..^ 2 wide slit, which offers the best compromise between throughput, spectral resolution, and rejection of starlight from the host galaxy. In addition to the UV spectra, we will obtain optical spectra of NGC 1097 and 3C 332 whose H Beta lines are too weak relative to the stellar continuum to be accurately measurable from the ground. Optical spectra obtained with STIS will exclude a substantial portion of the starlight, making the profiles of the Balmer lines, and particularly H Beta, easier to measure. At no additional orbit cost, we will obtain a reliable, simultaneous measurement of H Alpha\ in NGC 1097. This is particularly important because the broad emission lines of NGC 1097 are quite variable. Spectral fluxes are estimated either from existing HST FOS spectra (3C 332), an IUE spectrum (PKS 0921--213), or by extrapolation of our ground-based spectra (PKS 0921--213, PKS 1739+184, NGC 1097). In the last set of objects, we scale the observed strengths of the Balmer lines with respect to Arp 102B, to predict the UV line intensities that can be expected based on our HST FOS results on Arp 102B (Halpern et al. 1996). The lines in PKS 1739+184, PKS 0921--213, and NGC 1097 are expected to be about 2 times 0.8 times and 0.5 times as bright as in Arp 102B, respectively. The Galactic E(B-V) is between 0.02 and 0.11 mag in all objects, and was taken into account. The accompanying Table shows the predicted fluxes in the continuum at the appropriately redshifted locations of the important emission lines, and the S/N in the continuum that can be expected for the proposed exposure times. The exposure times are those that we calculate to be available after all the necessary orbit overheads, multiple reads, and dithering are taken into account. We used the sensitivity curves and noise characteristics (dark current and read noise) of the MAMA and CCD detectors, along with a slit throughput of 65--81\ the S/N, it was assumed that a resolution element in the FUV MAMA detector consists of 2 pixels in the dispersion direction times 7 pixels in the spatial direction, the latter enclosing 80\ transmitted flux. In the NUV MAMA, the resolution element is 2* 5 pixels, while in the CCD, the resolution element is assumed to be 2 wavelength pixel times 3 spatial pixels. The actual S/N might be improved by making a narrower extraction, or by on-chip binning in the spatial direction. In all cases, sky background is negligible. We regard the S/N values given in the Table as lower limits to what we should achieve in the profiles of the emission lines. The only object for which we have prior knowledge of the strength of the broad UV lines is PKS 0921--213, for which we expect the S/N in the lines to be about twice what we have estimated for the continuum (i.e., about 25 for ionC4 and about 50 for ionMg2). By analogy, we expect the same for the other objects. In the case of 3C 332 we expect the proposed STIS spectra to have a S/N in the continuum around LyAlpha 5--10 times higher than the previously obtained FOS spectra (in the same exposure time of 200 min). This improvement is a result of the higher sensitivity and considerably lower background of STIS and is the main consideration behind our requested exposure time. Because the LyAlpha line is a very important ingredient in our proposed tests, we have payed particular attention to the geocoronal contamination that might affect NGC 1097, which has a low redshift. We estimate that the flux of the geocoronal LyAlpha line, per resolution element, is somewhat smaller than the flux of the object, even in a 0..^ 2 slit. The expected count rate at the peak of the geocoronal line is 0.003 counts/s/resolution-element. But we will also exploit the long-slit spectrum to subtract the geocoronal line, leaving only 3--4 counts of noise in the final spectra of these objects. newcommand\tbsp\rule0pt18pt begincenter Targets and Estimated Exposure Times \medskip begintabularl c c c c r@hspace3mm r@hspace3mm r@hspace3mm multicolumn1cObject & multicolumn1cz & multicolumn1cGrating & multicolumn1cLambda & multicolumn1cf_Lambda & multicolumn1cCount & multicolumn1cExpos. & multicolumn1cS/N , multicolumn1c & multicolumn1c & multicolumn1c & multicolumn1c & multicolumn1c & multicolumn1cRate & multicolumn1cTime & multicolumn1c , multicolumn1c & multicolumn1c & multicolumn1c & multicolumn1c(Angstrom) & multicolumn1c( erg/cm^2/s/Angstrom) & multicolumn1c(ct/s) & multicolumn1c(min) & multicolumn1c ,, PKS 0921--213 & 0.053 & G230L & 2950 & 8.7* 10^-16 & 0.144 & 74 & 25 , & & G140L & 1630 & 1.7* 10^-15 & 0.021 & 122 & 13 , PKS 1739+184 & 0.187 & G430L & 3320 & 1.4* 10^-15 & 0.817 & 34 & 37 , & & G230L & 1840 & 1.1* 10^-15 & 0.072 & 80 & 15 , & & G140L & 1440 & 1.0* 10^-15 & 0.046 & 122 & 18 , NGC 1097 & 0.004 & G750L & 6600 & 3.5* 10^-16 & 1.66\;\; & 15 & 36 , & & G430L & 4900 & 6.2* 10^-17 & 0.874 & 15 & 36 , & & G230L & 2800 & 2.0* 10^-16 & 0.043 & 123 & 16 , & & G140L & 1215 & 1.0* 10^-15 & 0.047 & 122 & 19 , 3C 332 & 0.151 & G750L & 5600 & 1.9* 10^-16 & 0.635 & 34 & 32 , & & G430L & 3200 & 1.2* 10^-16 & 0.054 & 169 & 11 , & & G140L & 1400 & 1.5* 10^-16 & 0.079 & 200 & 10 , , endtabular endcenter -0.4 in Real Time Justification ----------------------- When the HST observing dates become known we will request time at ground-based observatories for nearly simultaneous optical observations of those objects that will not be observed with the STIS/CCD. These data will be combined with the UV spectra to construct the spectral energy distribution of these objects over a large wavelength range. We already have a long-term status program at Kitt Peak and Cerro Tololo which is devoted to these objects. We also have access to Keck Observatory, Lick Observatory, MDM Observatory, and McDonald Observatory for ground-based observations in support of the proposed HST program.
